But what "series" are you talking about? I was under the impression it was just a single game.

Yeah, it's NZS.

It's also part of the Bubble Bobble series, its creator officially sees it as Bubble Bobble 3.

rrgrgh i was going to be more hardcore but i'll have to settle with this.

i believe there's like four versions of this and i've played zero of them so just a name is acceptable.
