I also recommend Mac for your general purpose use. OS X is much more "fluid" (for the lack of a better word) system than Windows. I've been using a Mac for about 3 months now, ever since I started my new job and it's extremely easy to get into and use, even if you come from a PC environment. The biggest issue you'll most likely have is that the keyboard layout is slightly different (at least that slowed down my work at first), but with few days of use you'll get used to it very quickly, and in the long run at least I like it better. The only real con of switching from PC to a Mac is, like already mentioned, is that you most likely have to find new software to replace some of your favorite software. This isn't a huge issue as there's a lot of great software for OS X for pretty much anything, although admittedly you'll probably find some software easier for PC, and whilst many of OS X's software is better than what you get for Windows, there's still some things I haven't found a decent software for (i.e. a FTP/SFTP client, fuck you Cyberduck).

It would help if you would let us know what your exact options are as far as what the school is offering.  People in this topic are comparing a standard Macbook to high end gaming laptops when it's not very likely your school is going to be paying for you to have something like that (why would your school want to encourage you gaming in the first place???)

Just because you said you want to be able to play games doesn't mean you're going to be able to choose a laptop MEANT for games.  This also means the argument of hardware options does not really matter because when it comes to schools offering you things, you don't get that many options.

That is true, and there's no way the school would hook me up with a  computer made for gaming. I'm just saying, the computer I have now that i got from them works pretty well for games, but its not games specific. also its not really an issue if i can game or not but that's just what i use my computer for when i'm not "studying" (aka browsing sites).

I figure either would be fine, but i figured i'd ask. also, if the pc i have to choose from has vista or xp which should i go with? (heard bad things about vista but i imagine they are exadurating)

I've heard from a certain youtuber that you won't be able to buy a new computer with xp starting tomorrow.

i've actually had 0 problems with vista, but I only got it recently after a lot of bugs were fixed. just gotta make sure you get enough ram for vista, my comp has 2-3GB I forget

Not necessarily, Microsoft's just ending retail and OEM sale of XP starting June 30, 2008.
You can still get any surplus XP CDs, machines, and laptops that are still in circulation I believe, provided the store you visit still has them.

Nothing wrong with Vista. I find it better than XP. Then again some people don't. They're very much alike anyway.
