It seems there hasn't been a decent horror film in several years and there doesn't seem to be any introduction of new horror directors that have made their mark lately. It seems the same old story that a foreign director comes to America with a film under his belt, gets given a horror remake and fails badly - promptly goes back home.

I figured we could start some discussion about this whole thing, so what are your thoughts on current horror films?

Has there been any horror films lately that are any good or are things really as grim as people are making out (take One Missed Call for example).

It all seems a bit pessimistic right now. Perhaps it's because we're just coming off the big mistake of importing every j-horror film ever made, when everyone knew it was a bad idea to begin with? Who knows.

What do you think?

The Descent was the last good horror film I have seen. I think the modern horror genre has become way too in your face and is not at all subtle. You just have to look at the abomination that is the Saw movies to see what I mean

man the last saw movie was so fucking bad

I'd like to hear about any recent decent ones too because I haven't been around for half a year and maybe a good one came out I missed.

Hmm... Some of the better horror movies I've seen in recent years would include -

Event Horizon (Not THAT recent, but easily the most terrifying movie I've ever seen)
The Eye (The ORIGINAL. Very well done)
The Descent (Actually not bad)

But I love horror movies in general. I just bought One Missed Call. It's so terribly made. I had a wonderful time watching it. Same thing goes with Dead Silence, Darkness Falls... They're very fun to watch.

I thought the original One Missed Call wasn't too bad, Kou Shibasaki was really good in it.  I refused to see the remake, so I can't really remark on it (but I doubt I really NEEDED to see it).  As for any recent horror films, they've all looked way too bad for me to even pay the money to see them.  The only horror films I pick up are various foreign ones, and I never pay attention to when they came out.

To me all those Spanish horror films seem to crop up everywhere. And mostly they're pretty decent. Pan's Labyrinth, The Orphanage and [REC] come to mind.

Other than that I agree that all these j-horror remakes and violence-porn movies that crop up all over the place just make me cry a bit inside every time I see a new one's trailer.

The Action-Horror genre seems to be doing fairly well though. All these zombie films and stuff. It all seems lovely.

oh yeah "Cloverfield" was pretty good, "Diary of the Dead" was entertaining I guess but they kind of ruined it, and "The Mist" the movie based on the Steven King book was actually pretty good too.

Yeah, The Mist was probably the best recent one as far as I'm concerned. It had an awesome b-movie feel to a lot of it, was suitably creepy and gory and had a great subplot with Marcia Gay Haden's character.

I actually didn't like The Descent as much as everyone else for whatever reason. It's a good film for sure, but it sorta got less interesting as it went on (except for the end when it ramped up a bit).

I hear The Strangers is pretty good but I'm yet to see it.

I used to be crazy into horror films but I haven't been watching a lot of them recently. Still, from what I can see you'd be better off going foreign than looking for a good American horror film at the moment.

Cloverfield was basically a thriller and not really a horror genre, but I will agree that it was a pretty creative and interesting movie.

As for recent horror films I agree it's been a real suckfest. I'm not a giant fan of the horror genre, but I haven't seen many that I would watch just for the sake of film. I have probably seen only one good horror film recently and to be honest it wasn't incredible, and that would be the oh-so talked about in this talk: The Descent. Other than that your pretty dry on the horror side to be honest.

I was going to start talking about inland empire but maybe it's a better idea to make a topic instead hmm!  I'll do that tomorrow though it's 3 in the morning right now.

Also The Mist was pretty good but the ending kinda sucked soooooooo

The best recent one I've seen was "The Mist." My face was completely like WTF at the ending, though (but in a good way). So surreal.

And I actually enjoy the Saw movies. They are heavy on the gore, but I do find the plotlines and characters fleshed out. At the very least, everyone has a backstory, unlike a lot of horror movies both old and new. I personally think it's going to be the "it" horror franchise of the 00s if they continue to do well. The whole series have supposedly been already planned out.

It's the Hostel movies that are terrible. The first one... My God.

*derail topic*

I'm curious as to what everyone thinks is the "scariest movie ever". Might as well hijack this topic instead of making another.

For me, as I mentioned earlier - Event Horizon. It's not that great of a movie, but deeply disturbing.

Inland Empire looks awesome, I'd barely heard of it but I'm definitely gonna check it out.

Black Sheep was good if you're in the mood for a really silly horror movie. I thought it was really well done and Weta (the LOTR team) did the special effects and they're great for a low budget movie. It's incredibly b-movie and not scary in the slightest but it's gory as hell and really enjoyable.

I didn't really find Inland Empire scary. I don't really think it was meant to be really. It was really weird and I guess disturbing. It was an interesting film and the Digital video added to it, but I think Lynch should defo go back to film it looks much better imo

It wasn't an overall scary movie, but there are certain parts that kind of make you jump and leave with this feeling that I can only describe as OH SHIT THAT'S CREEPY.  A lot of horror movies (the shittier ones, at least) might make you jump but after that you're fine; those parts in Inland Empire, though, actually sent shivers down my spine!  There are only three parts really that did this (that I can remember, at least):   Granted, when you know what's coming that stuff isn't really as scary (except for the last one, seriously that shit is creepy as hell!), but it's still kind of creepy.

Also David Lynch uses sound so well.  I really think he should make an actual horror movie one day because it would probably be scary as hell.

Has anyone seen that movie "Hatchet" that came out like two years ago? They were semi-advertising it as kind of like the new "Friday the 13th" (it's the scariest movie ever!) but I never got around to seeing it.
