The First RPG Maker 2000 Game EVERTM

This is absolutely 100% not a doctored screenshot

It dawned upon me earlier this week whilst playing Dual Orb 2 that everything was looking a wee bit too familiar for my liking. For those of you too lazy to click the link, Dual Orb 2 is a japanese RPG for the SNES, it was released in 1994. Ignoring the fact that the game is 14 years old - and as such should be given a LITTLE slack for having unoriginal content - there was just this underlying vibe running through the game. 'Playing' Dual Orb 2 gives the same testicle-grating sickness that 'playing' an RPG Maker game does. The further I got into the game, the more I realised the truth. This wasn't just any RPG Maker game, oh no, this was THE FIRST RPG Maker 2000 game ever made.

I have irrefutable proof for this as well. In fact, I have 8 pieces of IRREFUTABLE proof that this game is both an RPG Maker 2000 game and is the inspiration for all RPG Maker 2000 games to come. Read on and weep, dear game makers.

1) THE SPACESHIP

This is the spaceship seen in the opening of Dual Orb 2. I am unsure if it appears again in the rest of the game as I got pissed off with the game and quit about 10 minutes into it. This is not important however, I am merely trying to pad out the description. Take a loot at this chipset that we ALL know and used for our first Final Fantasy clones.

Irrefutable proof!
The maps in Dual Orb 2 were made with the RPG Maker resources.

2) MOVEMENT
In RPG Maker 2000 games the characters move along a 2d grid using the arrow keys. In Dual Orb 2, the characters move along a 2d grid using the arrow keys.

Irrefutable proof! Only RPG Maker 2000 games use the arrow keys for movement.

3) CHARACTER SIZES

Take a look at these two characters. The one on the left is the main character from Dual Orb 2, and the one on the right is a character from the RPG Maker 2000 RTP. The similarities in both look and dimensions between these two characters is uncanny.

Irrefutable proof! Both Dual Orb 2 and RPG Maker 2000 games use the same resources for character sets, AND maps.

4) BATTLE SYSTEM
RPGs made in RPG Maker 2000 use a random encounter battle system to aid both the plot and the development of the player character's party. Dual Orb 2 also uses a random encounter battle system for these same two purposes. (This here's a two for one similarity). But wait! Those of you that have played Dual Orb 2 and used RPG Maker 2000 will notice that the battle system used in Dual Orb 2 is nothing like the one in RPG Maker 2000. That's right! We all know the default battle system is terrible, therefore Dual Orb 2 uses a custom one.

Irrefutable proof! Dual Orb 2 uses a custom battle system (and random encounters), as the default one in RPG Maker 2000 is terrible.

5) THE MENU

The resemblance between these two menus is so striking that I do not even know where to begin to start. The top one is from Dual Orb 2, whilst the bottom one is from RPG Maker 2000. Lets take a closer look at the layout of each. Notice the huge amount of similarities: the money counter in the bottom left in it's own box (and text aligned right), a menubar on the left (with text aligned left), character portraits in the middle with the relevant names next to them on the right, HP and MP information on the right, and a maximum of 4 party members.

Irrefutable proof! Dual Orb 2 uses a skinned version of RPG Maker 2000 menu.

6) THE DATE
Dual Orb 2 was released on the SNES in the year 1994. RPG Maker 2000 was released to the world (in Japanese, see: #7) on April 5th, 2000. Furthermore it is common knowledge that NOBODY in Japan uses RPG Maker, therefore the program could not have been used until 2002 when the english translation was released.

Irrefutable proof! RPG Maker 2000 games could not have been made before 2002, and as Dual Orb 2 was made in 1994 it is clearly the first RPG Maker 2000 game ever made.

7) JAPANESE ORIGINS
Before it was (illegally) translated into English by a third party, RPG Maker 2000 was originally only available in japanese. Dual Orb 2 was only ever released in Japan (in Japanese), and was only translated into English 6 years ago by a fan translation group. But it doesn't stop there! Both RPG Maker 2000 AND Dual Orb 2 were translated into English in the year 2002. This can't be a coincidence!

Irrefutable proof! Both RPG Maker 2000 and Dual Orb 2 share a common japanese heritage, and a fan translation in the year 2002.

8) IT'S SHIT
It is no secret that I do not like RPGs made in RPG Maker. Why is this you ask? Because frankly just about all of them are a bit shit. Now if you play Dual Orb 2 the first thing you will find yourself saying about the game is "Corr blimey mate..this is a bit shit".

Irrefutable proof! Both RPG Maker games and Dual Orb 2 are shit.

This argument is irrefutable. What more convincing could you need?

The first ever game made from RPG Maker 2000 is Dual Orb 2, which was revered by the communities as classic, though only a few people still know about the game's existence. <---HOLY SHIT EPIC EDIT

It will change everyone's view of rm2k.. I knew it, I always knew it, I believed in rm2k from the start. Many times I was tempted to despise it, but I just can't.

Jopefully, this will spark everyon'es motivation to make there own rm2k game..

Thank you very much Sarevok.. :fogetcry:

Ah, but this game is actually complete.

Therefore, your proof is actually not proof. There is no complete game for RPG Maker 2000, or ANY RPG Maker for that matter.
I was almost convinced too.

Wait, how did this game achieve MODE 7!!??

Looks like a hack. What do you guys think.
EDIT: I blame the Germans.

it was a movie file imported into the game

Also anything released is complete, and anything TO BE released is a sequel

This is as about as believable as I believe Final Fantasy 7 was created by some 13 year old who locked himself up in his basement.

So Sarevok speaks the truth.

I actually liked and enjoyed Dual Orb 2.
<RPG> contra's depth is an illusion, it's not sustainable for a real story
<RPG> it's just fun, with fun gameplay

This is hilarious because I actually THOUGHT "wow, this must be the lost child of rpg maker games" when I played this game a while ago.

oh and it features a... custom mode 7 system
pretty good for an rpg maker game imo

No, not really. (not sure whether the joke here is that you agree the game is good or that I am advocating a view different from that of the others.)

One of the shames of Dual Orb 2 is the (until recently) shoddy translation work and difficulty in reading what spells do. Should be fixed now, though! I actually liked most of the characters, although was totally crazy. Nuts. Crazy!

The story's not that bad either, although it boils down to SAVE THE WORLD. Heh.

(PS: Dual Orb chars only have arrow-based movement if you setup your emulator to use the arrows for movement. Even so, they have EIGHT WAY MOVEMENT!)
