Genre: Role-Playing
Launch Date: July 8, 2008

SONG SUMMONER: The Unsung Heroes is a Role-Playing Game that transforms your iPod® songs into powerful "Tune Troopers" that you can control in battle! As the protagonist Ziggy, you will embark on an epic journey to rescue your brother from the clutches of the Mechanical Militia! Intriguing characters, an epic story and a tactics-based battle system combine for a rich RPG experience previously only available on home and handheld game consoles.

STORY

From the days of old, Melodica was a land of music, a land of freedom. The people sang, played and danced to the music they so cherished. Until one day, they came — the Mechanoids, who enhanced their bodies with machinery. Those who were tempted by greed and power willingly gave away their souls for bodies of steel, forsaking their humanity to become cold, emotionless automatons. Now, they seek to destroy all that do not embrace their way of life.

But there is hope on the horizon. There are those who are fated to stand against the tyranny of the machines — the Superstars, who can turn sound into lethal weapons, and the Conductor, also known as the Song Summoner, who can summon powerful warriors born of music.

In their most desperate hour, Melodica awaits the arrival of their new Song Summoner...

FEATURES

# Transform your iPod songs into "Tune Troopers" to combat the evil Mechanical Militia
# Tune Trooper types and abilities are determined by the songs used to create them
# Your Tune Troopers can be powered up even outside of the game--just by listening to the songs you used to create them!
# Control Ziggy, a "Conductor" that creates warriors out of music, and guide him through his journey to save his brother Zero from the Mechanical Militia
# Experience a turn-based tactics battle system, divided into player and enemy phases where each side takes turns maneuvering their forces
# Deploy the right troopers at the right time, and use contraptions found on the map effectively to achieve victory in battle!
# iPod Click Wheelallows players to play the game as easily as selecting music

I guess they lied about no longer being creative, because I am looking at this and just... What the fuck???

It's, uh, certainly creative.. But more in the "out there" sort of sense.

I just read about this, I plan on buying it later today because when I'm out and only have my iPod to play with, all there is is solitaire.  The idea is kind of neat, I must say!

Man I hadn't even thought of this.

fffff dang they should just release monster rancher itself on the ipod IT WOULD BE SUPER

The biggest limitation on the ipod is the button setup but monster rancher would still be just fine with that setup

I don't know, it seems like developers are really good at making the limitations of the iPod work as far as controls go.

I need to get this.. And Tetris and Bejeweled. Then my iPod will be "fun."

For what it is, this is pretty good so far.  I mean it's not PINNACLE OF TACTICAL RPG GAMING, but for being a $5 iPod game it is pretty high quality shit!  I think my biggest thing is that besides creating your soldiers and getting bonuses for listening to the songs you use, the songs don't really come in at all.  Your characters get generic type-based names (I thought it would be cooler if they were named after the song or something, or at least let ME name them, it kind of sucks forgetting what came from what song).  Also I thought it would be neat if during that character's turn, it played a snippet of the song or something.  It's not that big of a deal, but it was a nice thought.  However, you can play your own music in the background instead of the game music, so I think I'll just make a playlist specifically for this game.  I made a playlist with the songs I used for my soldiers, so I can just listen to it during the game, then the next time I start the game again my play count for those songs will be up, thus my soldiers will get bonuses.

So yeah this is definitely $5 worth of a game, and if you want something to play on your iPod, definitely get it.

So Velfarre, do the songs you chose have any other impact on your soldiers besides the play count thing??? How does it work, you choose a song and it gives you some random, pre-defined character/creature based on the beat or something?

yeah this would only be cool if you had like the entire dylan discography and suddenly a big fucking tamborine joined your party, or you upload bon jovi and you only get slimes.

It does somehow impact your soldier's stats, but I haven't figured out how.  It seemed like songs that already had a high play count did better than the ones that didn't though, but there were a few exceptions to this rule too.  It has a variety of pre-defined characters, but the characters stats are determined by the song....somehow.

Also here is a hint for anyone else playing this:  the old man will occasionally say something before you pick a song that will give you a bonus if you take the hint.  For example, he might say he wants to hear something with a 1 or a 7, something to sing along to that's not too long, or something with a lot of words.  He's basically hinting at you to check the song length or title, and if you do so (for example, when he said something with a lot of words, I used Orson Welles Reads My Audio Tapes because the title had a lot of words in it) you get more of a bonus.  Just pay attention to that, he usually just repeats his usual phrase but when he changes it up, it can make a difference.

Storywise, my biggest concern is that the main character was going to go save his brother but it took him FIVE YEARS to train as a conductor...which means....his brother's just been trapped for five years...

How is he not dead yet?
