I was wondering how long it would be before someone claimed that this was God's punishment for legalized gay marriage in California. Looks like I didn't have to wait long. Also: God is a pussy if he couldn't even damage a building.

I still don't see why Earth Quakes are so bad, it's not the Earth Quake itself that'll kill you it's the buildings that can't put up with it that'll kill you. If your in the middle of no where on a flat plane whats it gonna do make you trip?

Of course if it was raining fish then it'd be more interesting news.

A tool is a tool regardless. I mean if you suck, you suck, and not even the most perfect tool could save you. And if your damn good then even with the worst tool ever conceived you could chug out some high quality shit.

i hate it when people call asking if i felt the earthquake and shit, i've lived in california all my life, this shit happens all the time(most of the time i don't even feel them), i don't care anymore. unless all of LA comes crashing down, then maybe people should be making calls

Pretty much this. Earthquakes are horrible things, but ones like these are just so small that they aren't that big of a deal. The whole day goes by, and unless somebody tells me about the earthquake or I see it on TV, I don't even notice it.
Either that or I think it's a steam truck rolling by.

Well yeah, it would be really convenient if the whole world was flat plane. Thing is, serious earthquakes are really devastating. Naturally all man-made buildings are in danger to collapse but it can also seriously damage the ground, cause landslides, make trees fall and even cause a tsunami.

I could never be able to live in a city or any place which could be hit by a serious earthquake at any given time. Like, when it happens and if it's really serious, is there even much you can do? I would seriously be afraid as hell since it could happen tomorrow, the next week or in the few following years, and the risk of dying is definitely there. What do you guys think about living in an area like that? Even if you don't die, there's a high risk that you are going to lose your home and a lot of your property. Or even worse, someone you know will die. I just can't imagine that.

I thought this was pretty serious, because I live in Australia where there are pretty much NO EARTHQUAKES and I thought 5.8 was high or something. Guess I was wrong!

Yeah, the earthquake in Lincolnshire earlier this year was only .2 weaker than this one and I (and a lot of other people) slept through it! Not exactly earth shattering in intensity. (incidentally this one has been downgraded to 5.4)

it was because it happened in america it was first page news, even though some of you saying it wasn't "that bad". remember awhile back the earthquake in turkey that killed like 30 000 people, but the news coverage (in canada the us, and (mexico?)) was on an earthquake that was less minor that happened in, california (im going off memory here, so correct if im wrong). i think only a couple of people died, but not many heard about this one in turkey that killed so many.

5.8 is pretty chickenshit, ESPECIALLY where it hit... Because they should be definitely prepared to handle earthquakes over there.
Like in Chile, every building is pretty much designed to stand strong earthquakes.

Speaking of which, I don't even remember any news covering the Earthquake in Sichuan which killed 70,000 but the Chinese government tried to keep the information as hush hush as possible to outside news sources.
