SO. I just barely "discovered" A Tribe Called Quest. I do not know much about rap/hip hop, but these guys are fantastic. Midnight Marauders is amazing. And this topic is basically to recommend me GOOD rap/hip hop. I REALLY want to give this genre a chance, but I need somebody that knows a lot more than I do to give me a hand. Also, let me know what rap/hip hop artists suck, because I need to know these things, too.

Thanks in advance, GANG.

My number one recommendation for you is probably De La Soul: Three Feet and Rising. It's pretty similar to the style I think you like, for example:

The Pharcyde:

Del tha Funkee homosapien:

Here is some other stuff I like:

I just saw De La Soul and Tribe at Rock the Bells last week, that concert was fucking great.

IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE IT'S ALREADY 1997. TIME FLIES WHEN YOU'RE DRUNK.

Ever heard of Everlast? He's like a country/hiphop crossover:

This is also pretty good:

Also this is pretty good but it's not really hiphop:

This is the guys from the previous vid, just stand alone:

This is the guys from the last and the second video together:

Anyway I'm not really into hip-hop and all that but this should definately help you out in some way!

if you liked Del, check out Deltron3030. It's an afrofuturist concept album about the (afro)future, and my favourite rap album.

Also Realm Dude, that Shad guy (Rock To It) is pretty amazing, he sounds kind of like some of those artist I've recommended, but yeah thanks for bringing it to my attention.

I'm going to be really cliched and say that if you enjoyed ATCQ then you'll probably enjoy Blackstar.

Most people who like them also like Common. His newer stuff has actually remained consistent as well.

Blu and Exile had a really good, easily accessible album out a little while ago as well.

Atmosphere are awesome when you're in the mood for them.

Lots of people I know really dig Jurassic 5. They've got a pretty old school, boom bap sort of vibe and they're all pretty good artists.

Lastly Cage is one of my favourite rappers and he has really great lyrics. He used to be pretty off kilter but he calmed down a fair bit on his last album and wrote a lot of introspective stuff and it turned out fantastic. There's some pretty chilling songs on there as well as some stuff that's a bit reflective and so on.

I didn't really go far outside the box with recommendations but I figure that's a decent spread of fairly light stuff! Afura's recommendations are pretty close to exactly what I would've done and all those artists are very good.

Terrible rappers are a dime a dozen nowadays, but I will make special mention of Lil Wayne who's an average emcee with an interesting style and somehow has everyone claiming he's the best of all time. If you listen to him and are very disappointed don't be surprised.

I typicially hate everything Wayne does, but he has a few good songs on his new album and the production is pretty good.

I had a short period where I liked Lil Wayne, but now I'm just tired of hearing him.  Now BIRDMAN is where it's at.  Way more solid.  I'd rather hear Wayne accompanying Birdman's albums.  I guess it's just he's getting to sound really poppy nowadays, especially with songs like Lollipop, can't stand that shit.

I find them hard to listen to, like they just don't click with me 100 percent for some reason. Like I know they are a really good band but the style just doesn't click, I'm definitely going to try get into them more though because I realize I am missing out.

The Roots are one of my favourite groups. Black Thought is such a good emcee it hurts.

Their latest album had this grimy/industrial sort of vibe that I really liked. ?uestlove's drums would make everything worth listening anyways.
