Quote from: Russia, Georgia battle on border
TSKHINVALI, Georgia - Russia sent tanks and reportedly bombed Georgian air bases Friday after Georgia launched a major military offensive Friday to retake the breakaway province of South Ossetia, threatening to ignite a broader conflict.

Georgia’s pro-Western president said the two countries were at war, while the Bush administration urged both sides to reach a truce and said it was sending an envoy to the region.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice urged Russia to halt attacks and to withdraw combat forces from Georgian territory.

it really seems Russia is well on it's way back to Cold War-era policies and aggressiveness!

Holy fuck! So it was THIS what the news were about, i only saw a glimpse of it.

Goddamn i wonder how this will turn out!

Russia's been very aggressive of late.  They had all those military "exercises" off the coast of...Finland?, and then they laid claim to the North Pole and an undersea mountain range (which is actually part of Canada).

Red Alert!
What the fuck?

Damn this all

I've been following this ongoing story for well over a year now (fuck, a few months ago in a topic here I said war would break out over this :( ) and it's really disgusting. Georgia wants to join Nato but Russia doesn't want it to. One of the requirements is for georgia to sort out it's seperatist problems or something, so Russia's been supporting the speratists in South Ossetia and Abkhazia, giving them weapons and funds, as well as Russian Passports, giving it an easy excuse to barge in and "protect it's citizens". So it set up "peacekeepers" there, while the Georgian government has been trying to call the seperatist leaders for peace talks, continued hostility over the past few days has flared up, clashes ensue, Russia marches in (note: this'll likely happen to other eastern european countries in the near future as Russia has openly stated it'll aim it's missiles at any US basees built in the area). Despite claiming to respect georgia's territorial borders. As horrible as this is, this can really really escalate into something far worse if not settled quickly!
This is the new cold war really, we've had a nearly stable 20 years (kosovo in the 90's springs to mind as a near disaster), but in the past two years Russia has been toying with eastern europe, started a major arms buildup and resumed such things as military parads and cold-war style recon.

BBC have been staying up to date on this, I've been literally checking it every 30 minutes today about this story!

EDIT FOR CLARIFICATION: I am in no way saying this is just because of Goergia wanting to join Nato, there is a rather nasty history about this whole thing, but I do believe that is a major factor in Russia's heavy involvement in this matter recently.

Kind of hard to get news on this, it's like in a little strip the bottom of the screen because of the immensely important EDWARDS SCANDAL

So South Ossetia is a small part of Georgia that has been de facto independant since the 90s (though unrecognized as a state by the UN), and yesterday the Georgian government "invaded" the region to gain control over it. So why did Russia invade?? I've heard info going both ways concerning who attacked first etc so I'm a little confused

edit: hold on gotta read kaworu post

Guys seriously?!? I say this all the time but MAN, US schools really need to upgrade their world history/studies and geography courses. You're mostly pretty smart people too, how can't you be at least a little interested in this stuff??

wait a second... you guys DONT know the names of every country? what the fuck, get an education. I mean at least learn about the ones that share a name with a state/county/province in your own country!

uh it isnt an issue of that at all (for me anyways), it's probably the fact that all the news sources say RUSSIA ATTACKING GEORGIA and well if you live in the US you probably assume GEORGIA THE STATE for a short moment!!

duh but render here is implying that US schools do not teach enough geography or something for either:

a) people to be interested enough in global politics or w/e to know about this
b) people to not automatically assume "Georgia" means the state

in the case of a) my response is irrelevant and dickish (it was probably a)

on the flipside i doubt the average person from georgia knows it shares a name with a u.s. state

OT but maybe it's because you live in a place where Georgia is nearby

If I say Las Vegas to you, you think nevada, but guess what there is a Las Vegas in Honduras wow you're an idiot for not knowing I was talking about it...

You just generally inherently think the thing closest to you usually, even if it's for a short bit because you realize that tanks can't drive over the ocean into Georgia, USA.

On-topic:
i really hope this doesn't lead to a wide scale war. :(

Hooooly shit. This is Putin's architecturing.

That’s right, you have the young gaming with the old(er), white people gaming with black people, men and women, Asian countries gaming with the EU, North Americans gaming with South Americans. Much like world sporting events like the Wolrd Cup, or the Olympics will bring together different nations in friendly competition, (note the recent Asian Cup; Iraq vs. Saudi Arabia, no violence there) we come together. The differences being, we are not divided by our nationalities and we do it 24-7, and on a personal level.

We are a community without borders and without colours, the spirit and diversity of the gaming community is one that should be looked up to, a spirit and diversity other groups should strive toward.

This is absolutely terrible.

This isn't a conflict anymore, by the way. This is full-blown war. It's late so I'm not going to try and explain the conflict but Wikipedia, as always, has good as-it-happens coverage: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_in_South_Ossetia_%282008%29

blaaagrgh war? i knew about the kosovo stuff but i have never heard about possible war with georgia before this. even i, who didn't pay much special attention to russia, knew that they were getting more aggressive recently and generally just getting worse and worse for at least a couple of years now.

this fucking country. i'm gonna go trawl wikipedia and bbc.
