Actor and comedian Bernie Mac has died at the age of 50.

The star was best known in the UK for film roles in Ocean's Eleven, Charlie's Angels and Transformers.

But in the US, he achieved critical and popular acclaim for the long-running sitcom The Bernie Mac Show, which earned him two Emmy award nominations.

He was admitted to hospital in Chicago last week and died early on Saturday morning due to complications arising from pneumonia, his publicist said.

Damica Taylor said no other details were available and asked that his family's privacy be respected.

The comedian suffered from sarcoidosis, an inflammatory lung disease that produces tiny lumps of cells in the body's organs.

However, he said the condition went into remission in 2005.


Mac is survived by his wife Rhonda, daughter Je'Niece and a granddaughter.

Hollywood has lost alot of talent this year.

I didn't see this coming. I read last night that he was going to be released from the hospital and now I read this? I thought he was pretty funny in most of his roles and made a sucky movie worth seeing. RIP Bernie Mac.

He totally sold out in the end... but you can't blame a guy who worked his ass off for years for finally getting paid.

Such a shame I just recently rented all the Oceans movies too.. He was a very talented actor and such a shame he was taken so early.

Wow this is terrible dude. Out of the 4 "Kings of Comedy" or whatever, he was the only one who wasn't worthless (the other three were Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley and Cedric the Entertainer I think). Didn't expect this one coming and yeah that Don't be a Menace clip was great. RIP.

The guy was a decent comedian but he was a really prolific and iconic person with some insane charisma.  He's the kind of person that can just appear in a movie or tv spot and steal the entire show because he's fucking Bernie Mac.
