I don't see much talk about Sonic Youth around here, I don't know why?

I really, really like Sonic Youth. My father used to have a mixtape with a lot of their songs on it that I used to listen to when I was younger so I was exposed to it for a long time but didn't like them/listen to them willingly until fairly recently, actually.

I think that Daydream Nation, while being a really good album, is overrated in being their "best" or most liked album. There's really good songs on there (my favourite, unsurprisingly, "Teen Age Riot"), though there's tons of other good ones. I really like Dirty, Goo, A Thousand Leaves, and several other albums...

Most people probably haven't heard of A Thousand Leaves, but if you get a chance to..check it out. "Sunday" and "Hits of Sunshine (for Allen Ginsberg) are both superb songs, check them out if you haven't, definitely.

Also, do you think Sonic Youth are better being more noise-driven or with softer, mellower songs (ie. Superstar & Hits of Sunshine)?

euuurghhgf this thread is so disorganized, but sonic youth, gogogo.

yes i also love sonic youth.  i would say since noise rock is still somewhat repellent to me i prefer the stuff that is closer to being traditional rock but even that is not very close.  i've always been really fond of the tones they got though and i am really into some of their riffs which doesn't happen to me with most bands.  i'm also big on the way ronaldo/moore really complement each other, which is another thing you don't see all that often in bands with two guitarists.

oh yeah, I've also been considering seeing them in concert the next time they come around. I know they're all old now...has anyone seen them recently? Are they worth going to?

i've seen recordings of relatively recent live shows and yeah they totally are.  old rockers are the best i think because they seem to have these tendencies to just sort of jam a bit and seem more laid back.  i would definitely see them if i had the chance!

I don't listen to them much anymore, but I used to thoroughly enjoy them.  I think what turned me off after a while was all of the rambling feedback/noise sections.  Really didn't do much for me.  They do have some good songs, however!
keep posting...

i love em! just saw them last month in nyc for free and it was a good show. not the best just because there were just SO many damn people being free and all. but their performance was good, kim was cute, thurston was a weirdo, and lee renaldo was pretty dorky. if tickets are above 20 dollars i wouldn't do it though.

i dunno. i don't really like them that much. i've listened to daydream nation a lot and for a while i just kind of decided "okay i like this album"  but really it's just kind of boring to me and a little ugly. i don't like either of the vocalists. i have listened to uhh two other albums, the most recent one and one they released in the early 90's. they were both okay, too, but yeah i just couldn't really get into them.

as for the seeming them recently thing someone asked, I saw them playing Daydream Nation in it's entirety for Don't Look Back. They were incredible. They played some newer songs afterwards as well. It was all great.

I like them a lot, they've been pretty consistently good throughout their career and have done a lot in funding outsider art that would otherwise go unnoticed.

Trees Outside the Academy is good but Psychic Hearts is pretty fuckin bad.

Have you heard his pre-sonic youth band The Coachmen? Their album Failure to Thrive isnt very remarkable but its worth checking out if you dig his solo material

Can anyone recommend some more stuff along the lines of Sonic Youth please? I grabbed their entire discography the other day after hearing some of their noisier stuff. The mellow tunes/noise dynamic is just amazing.

Also I wanted to learn some of these songs but literally almost every song uses a different, unusual tuning. Do they have like fifty guitars on stage when they play live?

they list like all the tunings for the songs on the website, if thats what you're having trouble with.  honestly i have no idea how they do it.  maybe they just change tune a lot.
