Alright guys. Here is a little experiment to help people find cool new tunes that they might enjoy without going into in depth cock chugging conversations about POST-PUNK GENRE APPRECIATION. This is an A - Z adventure for people who might like to find some new music to listen to. Just follow along and chill out to some cool tunes. If you recognize a name then you might like some of the other names that you don't recognize and when you're done, and if you feel like it, post your own A - Z Adventure.

RULE: If you do your own A - Z only pick one artist from each letter of the alphabet. (I know it's tough but I have to follow this rule too!)

Disclaimer: These are not necessarily my FAVOURITE ARTISTS beginning with these letters but I wanted to get a broad range of music sound in there. Enjoy.

Guys its pretty important to include the part scubacoaster mentioned when he says "if you like this band, you may like..." Because otherwise its kinda just you showing us A LIST OF BANDS. Not all of our topics are genre wankery btw scuba. (The three below this one for example).

A is for the Avett Brothers
folk.  badass harmonies and pretty sweet lyrics and they are really great.  Just started listening yesterday.
If you like the AV Bros, you might also probably like:
Sufjan Stevens
Johnny Cash
Murder By Death

B is for Between the Buried and Me
groovin prog something metal.  Really a lot of mixed elements from diff metal subgenres and relatives of metal.  The guy also has a really nice singing voice and uses it pretty awesomely in some of the reeeally chill parts.
If you like BTBAM you better also like:
sikth
pinback
i dont know who else.  the red chord?  I dont like them very much though.

C is for Castinets
I do not like Castinets very much at all but I guess some of his musical ideas are interesting and he is a bit of a diff take on folk.  Kinda.
If you like Castinets, you probably might also like:
a lot of other terrible stuff.

D is for Demon Hunter
Christian hardcore band haha (no guys I am not christian).  They are pretty mediocre but they have some reeeeeeally badass riffs like in their song "Not I".  The verse riff is great.

E is for eluvium
Some really good atmospheric (post rock?) or something.  I like the piano centric album they did but I dont remember what it is called.  Copia is also really good.

F is for Ef
You guys prob already know Ef but they are pretty awesome post rock.  The first two songs off of their album "Hello Scotland" are greeeeeeeeat.

G is for going upstairs and making some coffee

H is for hopefully I will come back and do some more later and maybe update these with youtubes

what are some good albums by the cinematic orchestra and also do you have 'tough guys don't dance' by soulsavers? (is that a norman mailer reference I smell?)

I think "Man with a Movie Camera" is the best Cinematic Orchestra album, but it's entirely instrumental. They've done albums like "Ma Fleur" which have shorter songs and vocals, but I don't think they compare musically to Man with a Movie Camera. (The Youtupe I posted up there is two songs from Man with a Movie Camera.)

I only have one soulsavers album which is "It's not how far you fall, it's the way you land." which is a VERY GOOD ALBUM I think overall. I haven't even heard of Tough guys don't dance so maybe that is a new release?

I've never heard of any of those bands that bunnymilk listed except for massive attack and weezer

what genre are most of them and please list the 5 best or something because I don't want to download alot of stuff I might not like. I really like some massive attack though, like "teardrop" and "Angel" are really good songs

I don't know about anyone else but this doesn't really help if not many people have heard the bands you're doing the A-Z thing with because its like: "Hey look A for a band I've never even heard of, maybe I should try out those four bands under it that I've never heard of either!

Yeah, I agree with harry manback. Maybe if you just listed the genre or gave a short description of the band, cuz at least then you have something to go off of instead of just random band names you've never heard of.
you will fail

I'm doing this right now. I kinda like this also because it shows you what music people listen to. and some people we know exactly what they're going to post, I think I could have constructed most of bm's post without seeing it and I don't even know him

This is why I put up a youtube with a song from each of the artists... so you could listen to see if you did like it!?

A is for Alice in Chains.
They were a grunge/metal/sometimes acoustic band from Seattle in the 90's. You may also like Metallica, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, Ozzy, etc.

B is for Bela Fleck and The Flecktones
This is a jazz/bluegrass/funk fusion band starring Bela Fleck and Victor Wooten. You may also like Victor Wooten's Solo stuff, Weather Report, Stanley Clarke, or really banjo filled bluegrass.

C is for Captain Beefheart
He was a friend of Zappa's but also almost the antithesis of him. Pretty weird playful music. You may also like Zappa, John Frusciante's early work, John Zorn, or Mike Patton

D is for Daniel Johnston
One of the best songwriters of all time and one of the least talented guitar players ever (But a decent pianist), lots of songs about the devil and losing your mind and stuff. You may also like Ween, Elliott Smith, Syd Barrett etc.

E is for Elliott Smith
Also one of the best songwriters of all time, but he could play the guitar like a mother fucker. His early stuff was pretty sad sounding but he got more poppy and upbeat (at least musically) with time. You may also like Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake, and pretty much anyone who rips him off.

F is for Fantomas
This is one of Mike Pattons 5000 projects. This is really noisy music with metal roots that is good for keeping people with limited musical experience away. You may also like Mr. Bungle, The Melvins, or John Zorn

G is for ... I have nothing...

H is the same as G

I is for Iron Maiden.
When people think of Metal as music about Dragons and stuff, this is probably the band they're thinking of. You may also like Diamond Head, Metallica, blahblahblah

J is for Jaco Pastorius
The best electric bass player ever, or so it's said. I haven't heard anyone that I consider better, so we'll go with that. You may also like Stanley Clarke, Victor Wooten, Jonas Hellborg etc.

K is for ... next

L is for Leonard Cohen
I've said numerous times that this is the kind of music you lose your virginity to. A deep, slightly creepy, yet pretty much tonedeaf voice singing about sexuality amongst other things to the sound of folk guitars. You may also like Bob Dylan, and other 60's folk guys.

M is for Mr. Bungle (Goddammit, idiot kid, I wanted to do Morphine)
Mr. Bungle is like every good and every weird band that ever existed put into a blender. You may also like Fantomas, John Zorn, Tomahawk, Faith no More or any other band Patton did that wasn't Peeping Tom (cringes)

N is for Neutral Milk Hotel
They weren't very talented of musicians, but Jeff Mangum wrote good songs and they had bizzare enough lo-fi soundscapes to keep you interested. You may also like Ween, Daniel Johnston, Elliott Smith, or really lame hipster bands that these guys tried to associate themselves with.

O is for Oral Examination
Not really, but that would be a sweet name for a band

P is for Peeping Tom
What happens when Mike Patton is on acid and listens to hip hop. You may also like really bad music.

Q is for... Queen... there we go
Freddy Mercury had one of the best voices, the coolest mustache and the worst teeth in Rock 'n Roll. Everyone in this band was talented. You may also like David Bowie, or other Arena Rock Bands

R is for Rush
Another one of them "everyone is talented in this band" bands. My favorite Prog band and the second artist on this list to come from the magical land of Canada. You may also like Peter Gabriel Era Genesis, Primus, Pink Floyd and castrato singers

S is for Smog
With a catalogue that ranges from good to too lo-fi and disjointed Bill Callahan's alias of Smog has produced some damn good music over the last 20 years or so (maybe 15). You may also like Mark Lanegan, Johnny Cash, Ween

T is for Tom Waits
My favorite songwriter of all time. Whether we're talking about his Jazzy older work or his crazy new stuff. You may also like Frank Sinatra, Captain Beefheart, Randy Neuman, and old blues artists with really raspy voices

U is for... Untitled Head? Can I do Gaming World artists?

V is for Victor Wooten
Arguably the most technical electric bassist ever, he is definately a funky, talented player. You may also like Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, Jaco Pastorius

W is for Ween
When you think about two idiots making music in there basement getting a record deal and then making a wider variety of music, you think Ween. You may also like Neutral Milk Hotel, Smog, Daniel Johnston

X is for...

Z is for Frank Zappa
Pretty much the greatest composer of Rock Music. You may also like Captain Beefheart, Classical Music, or early 20th century compositional music.

I don't feel like I gave a wide enough variety, but I just kind of scanned what is currently on my Windows Media Player Library.

Also, I'm sorry. I didn't feel like Youtubing 20 some bands. If you're interested, youtube it yourself.

A - Ahmad Zahir
Any of you who have read the kite runner may recognize this name. The afghan equivilant of Elvis, Bob Dylan and John Lennon.

B - Bruce Cockburn
Excellent folk/rock/blues/world musician who has collaborated with a lot of great artists and I especially enjoy his awesome lyrics and jams.

C - Calexico
South-west indie rock group that has done everything from cowboy music to shit that sounds like Children of Sanchez and have worked with Iron and Wine.

D - Dizzy Gillespie
Big Band, Swing, Latin, Afro-cuban, fusion, world, smooth... just a few of the styles of jazz this masterful trumpet player has explored in his awesome long career. He isn't necessarily my favorite trumpeter but he certainly surrounds himself with great groups of musicians on a regular basis, including forays into caribbean style folk music as well.

E - Esbjörn Svensson Trio
Chill as fuck piano/bass/drums jazz trio. Kinda in there with the 'nu-jazz' scene but not nearly as electronic as say Jaga Jazzist or whatever. Minimalist at times, bizarre at others, always sweet.

F - Fela Ransome Kuti
Leader of Afrika 70 and Egypt 80 and various other pioneering Afro-beat groups, you just have to hear his music to understand.

G - Edvard Grieg
Dark, stark, visceral whatever adjective on that continuum you want, he is one of the greats of his period. Highly recommend the piano concerto.

H - Herbie Hancock
One of the few musicians who played fusion for a long time but always managed to keep his soul and never stagnated. Still doing interesting shit and one of my favorite keyboardists/pianists ever.

I - IgnisFatuus.
My band.

J - Jaga Jazzist
was going to go with Jaco, but he'll make a return later. Their ethereal jazz/postrock sound always mesmerizes me, and their horn sound is so unique I can never get enough of it. plus they are rythmically tight as hell.

K - King Crimson
The best rock group that has ever existed. Dont even bother listening to the rest of the progressive rock genre because every band pales in comparison. Avoid any music they made after... 1984 or so however. It wasnt the same band as in the 70s when they were amazing.

L - ???

M - Mark Knopfler
former lead singer and principle guitarist of Dire Straits, stylistically similar to Van Morrison and Bruce Cockburn in his solo material, has taken a definite turn towards making country music, but he still has that great rock vibe and I will always dig his voice and sweet guitar playing. Saw him in concert with my dad not that long ago, he's still churning out great performances even though hes gotta be at least 60.

N - Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
Probably without a doubt my favorite person on this entire list. I dont even know how to describe his persona, but basically he is the most important figure in all Pakistani music and pretty damn popular in India as well. He plays a traditional style of music that is based around group improvisational poetry readings with intense tabla drumming, rhythmic chanting and clapping and harmonium. He scats like no ones business as well.

O - Opeth
I dont really listen to metal much anymore but these guys have a special place in my heart. I think everyone is familiar with them though, brutal at times, beautiful at others, they are really the only death metal band worth listening to.

P - Porcupine Tree
Everyone knows Porcupine Tree. fuckin cliche shit in this community, but hey, their psychedelic jams are fucking sweet as hell, and they're great live.

Q - Quicksilver Messenger Service
Their first two albums are some of the best 60s rock that exists. I personally think they're kind of the proto-jam band along with maybe Traffic, but regardless I really enjoy their rollicking, free-wheeling sound.

R - Sergei Vasilleivich Rachmaninov
One of my favorite composers, a tortured dark pianist whose music and chords are so intense that I get chills listening to some of his pieces.

S - Shahram Nazeri
Basically the best of all the Persian Classical musicians. Between interpretation, production values, vocal ability and all the other factors that can get kinda sketchy with this style of music, Shahram definitely comes out on top, though Mohammad Reza Shajarian and many others are worth checking out. Nazeri can sing like a bird and is a beast on setar when he chooses to do both.

T - Tom Waits
I really just like Rain Dogs and Closing Time and not much else, but yeah this letter was kinda sparse after weeding out all the bands that start with 'The'. I think everyone is fairly familiar.

U - Ulver
A band whose material ranges from black metal recorded on an answering machine to movie soundtracks, soundscape albums and musical horror shows. I really like the direction they've been going recently, the music just feels like sonic macabre that invades your soul.

V - Van Morrison
The quintessential singer-songwriter in my opinion. His back catalogue is vast and cavernous however, and picking out the good stuff can be difficult sometimes. He always manages to surround himself with sweet bands and write some groovy fuckin tunes though, so its all good.

W - Weather Report
The best jazz fusion group there is. Zawinul/Shorter/Acuna/Pastorius/Badrena is my favorite lineup, though they were only together for one album (Black market) and a sweet tour (that is documented in the Montreaux Jazz Festival of 76 show pretty well). Combining latin and the earliest stirrings of world music in the fusion scene they were always on the edge, between Zawinul's outright craziness and the rest of the group's addiction to various drugs cocaine and marijuana being the principle weapons of musical enhancement. The Zawinul/Shorter songwriting duo is one of the best in the history of jazz in my opinion, and Zawinul is without a doubt THE keyboard player. When people think of bass they think Pastorius/Clarke/Wooten/Claypool (why the last two I'll never know, they're both wankers but hey)... when people think of keyboard they should only think of Zawinul because it truly is his and he is the best - bar none.

X - ???

Y - ???

Z - ???
