So I recently started listening to Gnarls Barkley (why the fuck didn't I listen to this shit sooner) and it's really fucking good.  Wikipedia tells me it's some genre called "alternative hip-hop" or "trip-hop" and a bunch of other stupid sounding genres because music just can't be classified as MUSIC.  Can anyone else recommend some good... TRIP-hop or stuff that sounds like this?

i think by alt hiphop they just maybe mean hiphop without the mainstream production aesthetic and a more UNDERGROUND feel or whatever.  also obviously he is not a traditional mc.  i don't know anything exactly like them because cee-lo has kind of a unique voice but i mean, production-wise they are not that far removed from a lot of other acts within that scene, so you could check out other danger mouse projects or similar artists i guess.  i honestly have no fucking clue what triphop even is so i can't help you there, but had you asked me before now i would've said IDK PROLLY APHEX TWIN OR SOME SHIT but now that people are referring to gnarls barkley as triphop, i don't know!

Have you tried Cee-lo's other group? Or old Outkast which was also really similar.

also this is what i am listening to at the moment:

"“Troposphere, Thermosphere, Stratosphere

Can you imagine from one single idea, everything happened here

Understanding makes my truth clear

Innocent black immigrants locked in housing tenements

Eighty-Five percent tenants depend on welfare recipents

Stapleton’s been stamped as a concentration camp

At night I walk through, third eye bright as a street lamp.”

Alternative Hip-Hop is basically hip-hop without the trappings of mainstream garbage I.E. guns, hos, what up mah niggah, YYYYEAH BOYYYYY, and all sorts of stupid shit that make any self respecting black man facepalm when he sees a bunch of youngsters jamming to it at 300 decibels with the bass turned up so much it rattles the fucking windows of your vehicle 3 cars back.

To simplify the question, is there any rap/hip-hop you guys like that doesn't play on MTV or the radio?

Deltron 3030 is pretty good, as is Kid Koala, their DJ. I also like Sage Francis a lot. Maybe you will too.

Trip hop.  Hm.  El-P is trippy.  emfrik DJ Shadow?  Massive Attack are trip hop.

Just general good alternative hip hop though-- aesop rock (pretty cool but is starting to grow off me-- recycles a lot of rhythyms /rhyme vibes so he gets kinda monotonous), buck 65 (pretty cool guy, kinda twangy and weird to get used to but has some awesome storysongs.  I recommend his recent album situation (check out the songs 1957, shutterbuggin, and ho boys maybe from that album)), bernard dolan (not really hip hop per se but has a lot of stuff thats in the vein.  only one album now-- well two I guess, he released a version of it then made a more "polished version".  Both are good but the first one had a looot of stuff that got cut from the new version and I actually really liked most of it so I'd recommend getting both if you can).

heiruspecs, cunninlynguists, time machine, del, aesop rock, binary star, atmosphere (hes kinda gay but i like him fuck you).  also you know stuff i kind of like but don't really listen to that much but that you might like is company flow (they are good also ACCLAIMED but i am just not into them!), el-p, tribe, jedi mind tricks, sage (actually i like him quite a lot, but i rarely listen to him), cannibal ox (you can extend this to a lot of shit on def jux which is alright, but that i barely ever listen to anyway), sweatshop union, pharcyde

thats all i got sorry.  i'm sure people more into hip hop will have more!

seriously marcus this is a bad topic.

can we set up a rule that people have to at least attempt to use google or wikipedia before making RECOMMEND ME topics?

unless you specifically wanted GAMPING WORLD MEMEBR #5325 opinion on what he or she (lmao) thinks is good alt. hiphop, these kinds of topics are really lazy and ALWAYS have the same posts.

yeah pretty much.

if there's an individual you want the opinion of you can address them via PM. otherwise, asking for recommendations in a genre as wide as RAP WITHOUT GUNS is a waste of time on both the responder and the creator. there's no cultural or linguistic barrier preventing Marcus or anyone from going to Allmusic.com and typing Gnarls Barkley and checking the similar artists; he even went to Wikipedia but rather than reading the article on triphop which would include big names in the field, posted about how GENRES ARE ALL BAD.

recommendation threads that aren't specific are pretty worthless.

I was actually making fun because I don't think it's a big deal

I don't read the music forum because what people are talking about is either dumb or way over my head

I have the musical knowledge of a tone deaf granny.  I don't know any music websites, I don't know any bands that aren't more than 10 years old, and I have no idea what the difference is between the five hundred different sub genres of a subgenre of a genre.  Reading an article on music, regardless what it is, confuses the fuck out of me because i have no idea what I'm searching for and clicking through 5,000,000,000 youtube pages does nothing for me.  You guys are more knowledgable on this subject than I am.  You can point me in the right direction.  RAP isn't exactly a big subject on a fucking internet forum filled with gamers so what better way to understand a topic than go to the source?

Oh and I did do a google search for WEBSITES WITH GOOD RAP/triphop/althiphop and I got the same shit I'm trying to avoid + websites trying to sell me stuff.

atleast here i can get a list of names to search from (allmusic.com, thanks steel i didn't even know a website called that existed).  i respect the opinions of you guys more than a generic hard-to-navigate website that would otherwise take me 40 hours to weed the garbage from the goodstuff.
