I'm on this. Hopefully I'll be done by a couple of days. I just need to get back into the whole Dwarf Fortress mood.

Shinan's been taken by a strange mood!

I have a feeling the fortress will be in much worse shape by the time I'm done with it :)

1st Granite 33
I am Shinan, the lone miner in this fortress. The previous rulers saw fit not to have too much mining going on, which meant that there's vast expanses of underground that is completely unexplored. Thus I start this diary as I start the exploration of the underground to see what dangers can be found within the mountains.

The fortress can sustain itself pretty well by now and it shouldn't panic even if I leave it be for a while.

4th Granite
Alright so the fortress did panic when I left it be for a while. Lots of complaining about stuff that doesn't exist and stuff that is wanted. So what if you can't brew beer and the drinks run out? No water supply either.

I'm working on it I promise. I know there has to be water underground.

15th Granite
Nearly every dwarf in the fortress is thirsty but what can I do about it?

14th Slate

To make the dwarves happy a road is being built to the fortress. It's also a way to get rid of some stone.

16th Slate
I hit a magma pool today. These are interesting times we live in.

20th Slate
Some Dungeon Master guy appeared together with some immigrants. What is he supposed to be doing here?

He's certainly making some ridiculous demands for housing

24th Slate
A wall builder built himself into a wall. Smart guy that. When I have the time I will dig him out of there.
In happier news I have uncovered the magma pool. There are som fire imps and magma men in there but not incredibly much. As long as I don't go too close while I start thinking about how to use that magma for something useful.

3rd Felsite
A guy went near the magma pool to hunt and died. I will close off the entrance to it so that dumb people can't go near anymore. Let the miner's do the underground work and you hunters can run around above ground doing whatever it is you do up there.

I've noticed that whenever I go up near the surface I'm beginning to feel uneasy. I've built myself my own room as far down as I can get and live there now. The light hurts my eyes.

12th Felsite

I freed up some time to go closer to the ground and free up the stuck dwarf. I expected to only see bones and a rotting corpse but it turned out that the dwarf was alright. He had started nibbling on his arm but otherwise he seemed awfully eager to run away and eat something. I've noticed an awful lack of meat in the fortress and while I was closer to the ground I wandered around and noticed that there's no butcher in the fortress. I hope that gets fixed soon.

11th Hematite

Today the Dungeon Master's rooms were finally finished. There's nothing drink anywhere in the fortress. There's a huge queue before you can drink some lousy dirty water outside. I'm afraid someone will get sick before long. And I haven't found any trace of water anywhere.
I hope the other dwarves aren't losing hope. My co-miner who is actually an engraver is working well on my side. We both know the desperation those above must feel and we feel it too occasionally.

17th Hematite
Frankie was unelected mayor. I don't know if it's my failure to bring water to the dwarves that forced this upon the dwarves or not. But now Frankie will have more time to check orders and keep records.
Unfortunately Frankie was kicked out of his mayor's quarters and now he lives in the apartment complex just like many others. However some dwarves have seen it fit to decorate his quarters as much as possible.

The new Mayor's guys didn't manage to kick Frankie out of his office though and he's still keeping that one and keeping records in it.

19th Hematite
Traded with the humans. Sold lots of crafts in exchange for drinks, food and wood. We should be able to start the smelting process soon.

17th Malachite
It seems the fortress isn't too popular as there were no immigrants this season. However I'd say that's just as well. Our food production is scarce as it is.

7th Galena

Damp Stone found! I ran up to tell the news to the whole fortress!

16th Galena
After a lot of round-digging I dug out a safe entrance to the underground river.

Unfortunately it is infested with snakemen and lizardmen all cramped up in that small space. I've asked the militia captain to go and clean up the mess. While the captain was expedition leader he was a bit of an ass to us miners but he's a great fighter and should be able to clean it out in no time.

24-25th Galena
Sarevok goes near the river and enters a martial trance.

It's a mighty thing to watch but he suddenly decides to run forth alone. I wasn't there to see it happen but they said he slayed nearly all the watermen in one fell swoop. But tragedy strikes as he looses his footing and falls into the river.

Sarevok the Great will be remembered.

23rd Limestone
Traded food, drink and wood for crafts with the dwarven traders. These craftfactories are great for the economy.

9th Sandstone
Working with the river is dangerous. My long-time co-worker and very dear friend. More than friend in fact. She fell into the river during a regular digging excavation today and drowned.
Curse this river and curse this fortress.

16th Moonstone
My suicide attempts seem to fail over and over again. The other dwarves tell me I should get over it but it's difficult. I dig and I dig and the stone and the ore and the jewels no longer hold the same light in my eyes.

But fate seems to intervene all the time and I've survived so far.

16th+25th Moonstone

Two Goblin ambushes! The dwarves retreat into the fortress and the military units scramble to meet the opposition. The tactic is sound and simple. Hide behind the wall and wait for the goblins to come to us.
One Dwarf, the Elite Wrestler Cog Kibakgos defies this rule though and runs forward alone.
Never leave a man behind and the others follow. Fortunately the goblins are badly equipped and not very numerous. At most perhaps 10-15 and they are easily dispatched with the help of war dogs.

Only two casualities. The lone sentry who first spotted the attackers and a soap maker caught in the open.

2nd Opal
Cog Kibakgos the hero from the battle is finally ahiled as a champion together with the rest of the remains of Sarevok's unit.

1st of Granite 34
The end is fairly quiet. I dig and dig. With newfound inspiration I lead magma closer to the homebase. Though still not nearly ideally close. But there's a magma smelter and a magma forge.

As a miner my experience is mostly in digging and not very much in leading liquids from one place to another. As such that also means that the well is currently close to the river. No one need to die of thirst anymore. (except for the depressed melancholy glassmaker, I would never go so low as to die of thirst. I much preferred the berserk craftsdwarf that ran around in the corridors)
There's a lot of raw metal ore being dug up from all over the fortress underground. As well as rock of all colours and shapes. For the one who follows after me I wish the best of luck. And perhaps he'll be able to do something better and/or cool with the magma and the river. I know I didn't.

I hope the download works, I played without the graphical mod in my own folder so I just moved the save file over to the downloaded version. Nothing SHOULD mess up right?

Also sorry Sare for killing you off. I didn't mean to but that guy just jumped straight into the river... After killing a giant Ohlm thingie. I suppose the fortress really is in worse shape now after my year than it was before. 8^)

So, it's mah turn. I'll update my post after each season. Spring should be done today :) sadly it won't be done today, so here's an introduction. :D

31st OPAL

Me and my band o' highwaydwarfs have just settled in a godforsaken cave near Mt. Goatse. The noble we've just beaten up carried nothing but pennies and some documents. I pocketed the golders while noone saw and took a peek at the papers. These say that... holy fuck... the damn noble just bought A FUCKING FORTRESS. No wonder he didn't have any money with him - the asswiper spent everyhting on the fort. He was also fucking stupid and filled in his name with a stick of charcoal, so I quickly whiped it off and wrote my name in with my own damn blood. Then I waited till my gang of scoundrels fell asleep and rode off to my OWN DAMN FORTRESS. Wealth, adventure and dwarven sluts, here-I-fucking-come.

1st GRANITE

So I've just reached the fortress. It's called Gateburned. What damn mushroom addict could've thought up a name like that?
Whatever, so I go inside, announce that I'm the new goddamn king and ask for booze. Then I notice that about half of the fortress' population is walking around in the corridors doing nothing. Sooooo, this shitter is full of good-for-nothing lazy ass ballyhooers.

3rd GRANITE
It's been 3 days and I'm still waitiong for my booze. People here don't respect me, although I am the FUCKING KING. So I grab my axe, rush into the corridor and start threatening everyone I can see. It's time to make my slaves respect me.

...after a couple of hours of  shouting at dwarfs I give up. Guess I have to learn how to actually run a fortress.

And then, when I get all of theirs respect, I'll make all of them my royal servants. They'll start kissing my ass.

Time to see the fort's library.

7th GRANITE

So, after reading a crapload of books on running a fortress, I order the idlers to do some work. I've read that food is essential in keeping slaves alive, so I'm going to set up a ririgation system. (or whatever it's called). Also, the fortress is lacking traps, so I've ordered the metalsmith's to forge some spikes, the mechanic to make some mechanisms and dug out another room for a second mechanic's workshop. Also, we've struck some mineral with a strange name. It's oliverock, if memory serves me right.

And then, just as I thought everything started goin' well, a carpenter has been possesed. Fuck him. Now he's running in the corridors and kicking stuff around.

(sorry for the hold up, unexpected real life problems have been kicking in D: )

I really want to get into this game. Mainly because It looks like it'd be easy to program something just like it, and when I look at the concept at face value, I can't help but think "ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE".

I really want to make that dream a reality.

There's zombie apocalypse mods for the game, btw.

Did this thing grind to a halt, Sarevok? I'm kinda kicking myself that this completely flew under the radar for me. If it's still going, count me in. Otherwise, if folks are still down for it, I'd be game for starting a new fort.

Also EDC, the majority of critters, civilizations, items, and everything but core mechanics are designed with a series of tags that make modding easy. Add the [Firebreath] tag to the Dwarves racial entry, for instance, and they'll be blasting things with gouts of flame. More subtly, something like [LikesViolence] or [BoneCarn] will make them derive happy thoughts from violence, or eat and digest bones. You can create completely new races too, as well as item classes, etc.

I've also tweaked the game to play Goblin Towers and Human Settlements instead of Dwarf Forts, which actually changes the game pretty significantly. It can be kind of fun too, if you're looking for a change of pace, though Humans are the most playable other Civilization as default.
If no one went off on tangents, we'd keep going in circles.

I don't know, I was wondering myself. The last guy never replied, let me check up on him. >
