(I searched the forums and didn't find a topic on this.)

Quote
Mirror's Edge is an upcoming first person action-adventure video game being developed by EA Digital Illusions CE (DICE), due for release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 11, 2008 in the US, and November 14, 2008 in the UK,[4] and Windows-based PCs on January 6th, 2009.[3]

The game was announced on July 10, 2007 and will be powered by the Unreal Engine 3 with the addition of a new lighting solution, developed by DICE.[2] The game has a realistic, brightly-colored style and differs from most other first-person perspective video games in allowing for a wider range of actions—such as sliding under barriers, tumbling, wall-running, and shimmying across ledges—and greater freedom of movement, in having no HUD, and in allowing the legs, arms, and torso of the character to be visible on-screen.[7]

The game is set in a conformist dystopia in which communication is heavily monitored by a totalitarian regime, and so a network of runners, including the main character, Faith, are used to transmit messages while evading government surveillance.[8]

A demo is due to be released on the Xbox Live Marketplace and the PlayStation Store by the end of October 2008.

I guess EA is coming out with a game for Xbox360 and PS3 based on Parkour/Free-running! It won some awards at E3 including "Best Original Game" , "Best of GC" (Game Critics) and "Best of Xbox 360."

I don't know too much about VIDCONS but this looks pretty cool. It's classified as a "first person action-adventure video game" which is kind of like g*y indie dudes calling their favorite band "low-fi experimental power punk" or something. That's not important.

I like how it has GUNS GUNS in the missions but they're not meant to be a focal point. As a matter of fact, apparently if you complete the game without firing a bullet you can uncover some hidden stuff. The levels look detailed and fun. It feels like one of those games that will be really challenging since there's probably little room for error when you're JUMPING OFF OF BUILDINGS but but...... the fun factor will neutralize the frustration.

Here's some screenshots:

Here's some trailers:

I was excited about this until I found out recently that the PC release is way delayed which means it's primarily a console title which means it's a steaming pile of shit.

Unfortunately. I thought it looked innovative and fun.

oh look its parkour the game.

the two things that bother me are LETS HIGHLIGHT SHIT YOU CAN DO IN RED and the fact that I really doubt its gonna play as well as the trailers lead us to believe. otherwise yeah I'm kinda psyched.

I saw this first in a mag and I was excited. I loved the playground aspect of Assasin's Creed (as novel and shortlived as it was) so I am very interested to see how this plays out.

It's just that PC ports of console games are generally pretty shite. And I'm a PC gamer. If this wasn't another port it wouldn't have a delayed release.

It looks great and all but why is everything either red, blue or white and also bright and clean? Is it like a gameplay thing where the game points out all the spots you can jump to etc. so that even a blind guy can see them?

+ How far in development are these clips from because the enemy AI seems really passive and stupid in the first clip. The chopper doesn't seem to pose any sort of threat at all either (it hits maybe once and the player isn't even trying to dodge or take cover but then again the player is constantly running and moving so I dunno).

Is this game planned to be so easy that the enemies are just a minor inconvenience or is it because it's work in progress?

looks good/gorgeus/fun and all that shit

Am I the only one who gets the feeling this game plays itself if not for the fact you hold down forward/move mouse/press jump once in a while?

And you're getting shot at, but nothing ever really happens to you..?

Anyway, I don't have anything against PC ports.

Well, most of them anyway.

I haven't seen many recently that were bad.

As far as I know the red thingies are toggleable in the options. Also one theory about the chopper chase (if it's the same that I've seen) is that since the game is all about movement and "flow" there's some kind of built-in mechanism where the chopper can't hit as long as you're moving.

If that's how it is I think it's a really neat gameplay thing.

EDIT: THere's apparently also a lot of alternate routes than those that are highlighted in red. According to everything I've read the game will encourage a fair bit of experimentation on the levels at times (and there will apparently even be a time trial mode where you can replay levels and try to do them as fast as you can)

Shit is highlighted in red because if it wasn't you wouldn't know what the fuck to do.  GRANTED it could maybe be a little subtler but whatever it's just a guide basically so shit can stay fast and seamless

Yeah there's an official trailer out where one of the founders of parkour runs around jumping on shit and the video goes back and forth between gameplay and his free-running. At the end it says something like "play online and try and beat Sébastien Foucan blah blah" so I guess you can watch the replays of other people's alternate routes and try and copy them or one-up them and shit and beat their time.

Yeah there's a ghost mode in the time trial too if I remember correctly, so you can run around hunting your (or perhaps even other's) best times.

...See how excited I am about a game I will never buy because it's a piece of shit console port that will probably have some kind of two-installs online activation thingie bundled with it that will install rootkits.

I really wanted this game ;_;

you can't "port" console games to PC's, all games are made and developed on PC's in the first place. The long dev time for the PC is to fine tune graphics (giving additional options something not needed on consoles, etc.), optimizing for the PC platform (testing various setups), additional content, etc.

They where intentional design elements. They wanted to mute out the city and highlight the objects you could interact with so you can speed through the environment. It was for the sake of making the parkour elements more intuitive.

The stuff highlighted in red/etc is supposed to be some really corny way of adding synesthesia as a gameplay mechanic I think

weren't dark areas routes that lead to dead ends, too?

We talked about this some in the E3 topic, it looks pretty good. But I still don't know what the game is about and why you're running the whole time. i didnt look at the trailers or anything

i dunno.  i wasn't too bothered by the red highlighting when i watched the trailer like four months ago!  didn't they only do it for like PIPES and shit?  i'll comment more when i have time to watch the videos like tomorrow maybe but yeah, iirc it wasn't very obtrusive or anything.
