I just saw The Hangover on a date, and it was seriously more funny than I expected (I didn't expect it to be very good). Certainly not a classic but the cast was actually pretty good and I liked the characters!

That’s right, you have the young gaming with the old(er), white people gaming with black people, men and women, Asian countries gaming with the EU, North Americans gaming with South Americans. Much like world sporting events like the Wolrd Cup, or the Olympics will bring together different nations in friendly competition, (note the recent Asian Cup; Iraq vs. Saudi Arabia, no violence there) we come together. The differences being, we are not divided by our nationalities and we do it 24-7, and on a personal level.

We are a community without borders and without colours, the spirit and diversity of the gaming community is one that should be looked up to, a spirit and diversity other groups should strive toward.

I finally got around to watching Brazil, and damn was that a good movie.  I thought the casting could have been a bit better, but it worked.  I was more impressed by the setting, the insane plot, and the fact that it maintained humor throughout.  After reading more about Gilliam (was involved with Python and directed 12 Monkeys, which is awesome), I'm determined to see the rest of his work.
unfortunately nothing he ever did is as good as brazil. not even close. it's all worth watching, but don't get your hopes up too high.

(can i give a valid reason not to go basically?)
it is a movie for children. go if you like movies for children, do not go if you do not like movies for children.

I got up early to catch the only screening of Moon today at a local theater.

And I have to say, it was brilliant. Really inspired me creatively. It asks so many philosophical questions, just, this incredibly unique story that is simply beautiful. One of those movies I will never see anywhere else. I don't have much to say without spoiling the movie.

One of those rare sci-fi gems highly recommend.

you have no idea how much I want to see Moon, but there isn't any theatre that is playing it in my area, and I'd have to drive down to Philadelphia to watch it, and although it would be worth it, I really don't want to have to do that.

I saw a trailer for this a while back and been wanting to see it sinse then but it hasnt shown up in any theater's nor have I seen a single add for it anywhere. I got the impression from the trailer that it was more of a low budget movie rather than a high end Hollywood movie so getting my hands on this may be tough.

$5mill indy movie.

Indy movies in America don't get any mainstream love whatsoever, so there is no point in trying to regularly market on television and whatnot. People who want to see it already know about it, so they don't bother really.

My friend worked on the special effects on Moon in London where it was filmed.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this movie, I haven't checked to see if its playing in any local theatre's so I'll probably just end up catching it on DVD, which is a shame :(

I just watched the new Street Fighter movie, and it was really shitty.  I can't believe they got just about every fucking detail wrong.

I've been on a horror movie kick lately, so I watched the entire Hellraiser series. I'm working my way through the Warlock trilogy when I have down time. I remember getting dragged to church when I was younger (back around the time Warlock came out) and hearing a couple of women talking about Julian Sands and "the things he DID" in the movie. Next up will be Candyman. Also saw Boxing Helena for the first time last night (insomniac). The titular character was so annoying(not really the right word?) that after a while I was just thinking "Okay, I get it - she really deserves this, lets just get on with the sawing of bones please..."

The only problem is that in almost every horror movie I've ever seen, I know pretty much where the shots are going before they happen. The last time a movie really scarred me, I was about six. Hellraiser 1 & 2 were kind of surprising with the level of gore, considering when they came out, but not really scary - I just started quoting Pinhead and doing Chatterer impressions.

Can anyone recommend some really above par horror movies?

Just finished watching Candyman for the first time, really enjoyed it. It was fairly predictable, but I really liked the ending. I also watched In the Mouth of Madness a little earlier. John Carpenter's take on H.P. Lovecraft. It could just be I'm totally desensitized to scare tactics due to the raw amount of horror movies I've digested in the past week, but I sat reclined in my chair the whole time. Don't get me wrong, as an H.P. Lovecraft fan I really enjoyed the movie, but it didn't knock me out of the chair.

Afura - The character or that movie in particular? It might be because I didn't get around to watching any of the Hannibal Lecter movies until I was 22, but I never really felt that about the character or the franchise. I had a clear idea of what the character was about though, with him becoming something of an international icon, so there were really no surprises for me. I'm told that the novel Hannibal was far more intense/graphic then the movie version, but I haven't read it yet - unlike the others.

I have noticed that movies outside of the horror/suspense/thriller genre are more able to surprise me from time to time. Horror movies have a built in sort of rhythm. Combine that with learning to read camera moves and scene blocking, and you can deconstruct an entire film into "yup, mm hmm, precisely." I'd like to see a new Horror movie that shakes it up, applies the theory of broken rhythm to film, so to speak.

the only way it's enjoyable is to see it in the theatre with a friend and no one else there, this is the ONLY reason i got through this movie

the dude that played vega (the guy from the black eyed peas, i forget his name) was on the view and he mentioned something about the dvd coming out and i could not for the life of me understand why you would continue to admit your involvement in that film

the only good casting was the guy who played balrog

I watched The Watchmen again. After the novelty of being a watchmen movie wore off I realized that it was just plain bad. I tried very hard to like it... but I could barely sit through it.

I saw watchmen for the first time recently too. A lot of it was in slow motion, I think it was to fill more time. Most of the scenes without dialogue were slow motion. I cringed at leonard cohen's hallelujah fuck scene it seemed so.... shrek.

If you want above par horror movies then shit like Hellraiser/Candyman/WARLOCK is not the way to go, although I guess that would depend on how you look at the horror genre.  All horror movies employ elements of both terror and horror but it's the ones that lean more towards terror that I think are much more interesting and rewarding than boring slasher flicks like Saw or Hostel (leaning heavily towards horror), which unfortunately I think are the current representatives of modern horror for most people.  Here is what you should be watching instead:

- If you haven't seen it already, start with The Shining.  It's a pretty good example of a movie that remains subtle even while a character is yelling and screaming and chasing his family around with an axe.
- Then check out Rosemary's Baby and Repulsion and I guess The Tenant if you like the first two.
- Also The Haunting (1963), or you could just read the book instead because it's the best.  The book handles the breakdown of the main character much better than the movie does but the movie is good in its own right so you can't go wrong either way.
- Jacob's Ladder isn't great but it's enjoyable and I think it's still better than most movies of its kind.
- The Wicker Man (1973) is fantastic but it's not exactly a typical horror movie.

Then after all that you can go into more surrealistic horror like David Cronenberg's Videodrome, David Lynch's Eraserhead, and Ingmar Bergman's Hour of the Wolf, but that stuff's on a whole different level and should only be watched if you want to devote time and thought to them.
