Watched this anime movie. Its called "Origin - Spirits of the Past". overall just viewing the story, its an OK movie. but the whole underlying philosophy sort of pissed me off. Hippy anti-individuality anti-technology. Treated the "forest" as some sort of benevolent Borg. You to accept the obviously crappy life and made the only way to fix it all out to be some sort of evil act. I almost got the vibe that it was saying that catastrophic event that killed billions in the beginning was a overall GOOD thing. Gave a whole "Amish+hippy" vibe.

but yeah, ignoring all my philosophical disagreements it was a somewhat good story I suppose.

watched it on Hulu, so you guys can watch it to if you want. maybe tell me that I'm a dumb fuck head for thinking things I thought about it. IDK.

Thanks for the list Roman. I've seen most of those though. The Nicholson Shining was so above and beyond the crappy made for tv version I saw when I was younger that it wasn't even funny. The part with the manuscript, when just how long he's been going crazy is revealed was a great scene. I haven't seen Repulsion or Videodrome yet so they'll go on my list. Also thanks for mentioning Jacob's Ladder, I'd almost forgotten about that one.

I realized it is not even funny how many horror movies I've seen. My band was pure horror punk themed when we started, so we'd buy or rent dvd's in bulk, hangout and watch them.

With the horror vs terror thing, I've always thought that the implied/promised/threat of violence was more powerful then just splashing the first three rows in the theater with blood. The actual application of violence/gore sort of numbs a person to it. It is not good when a medium is actively inoculating its audience against itself.

That said, I still enjoy a Fulci film now and then.

Speed Racer - It's a great movie if you love epileptic seizures bad acting, and enough glam to put 1980's rockers to shame... I managed to watch about 20mins before I gave up.

The Condemned - Kind of the same idea as Battle Royale only with criminals, lots of plot holes and very obvious.

Tbh I really don't understand the backlash that Speed Racer got, I saw the movie twice and I loved it both times. I loved the really amped up style, the childishness of the whole thing fused with the whole "mature" story. Real fun ride.

I can't beleive you left out Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula from your list, Roman. That movie is a total mindfuck.

The incredible hulk, what an awful, pointless movie
Play Raimond Ex (if you haven't already)

Which one? The Ed Norton one was better then the Eric Bana one, but they seem more interested in dropping a lot of setups for future sequels then in actually creating a good initial product.

I've interrupted my horror movie binge with episodes of MillenniuM. I remember about a third of the episodes so far from when it was running on tv, and I now have the main titles track embedded in my brain. I'd like to see them wrap it up with a new movie, but I'm not holding my breath.

too much keanu

I left out a lot of stuff but if we're going to bring up vampire movies check out Werner Herzog's Nosferatu.  also check out the original nosferatu but I can't make a personal recommendation because I haven't seen it yet oops

Blood, The Last Vampire - I was really hoping this would be good and for the first 5mins I thought we might actually get a half decent movie, boy was I wrong. The cheap CGI at first didn’t look too bad until you see a demon for the first time, the blood which splatters everywhere also didn’t look that bad until you started paying more attention to it and realise how bad it actually is.
Then you got a bunch of Asians who sound like they are struggling to speak English to one another and I just couldn’t help but wonder why they didn’t just speak their own language to each other and give us subtitles, it would have looked and sounded a lot better.

The Last House on the Left - Wasnt expecting much from this, idk maybe it was because I had just watched Blood, The Last Vampire but found this rather entertaining although the last 5seconds of the movie was completely out of place for me.

"Ghost Dog" and then "The Signal"

Ghost Dog was good. The Signal was good to, even though I've seen it like like 5 times now.

primer

i was really surprised by this movie. a friend lent it to me, and i went into it not really expecting much, but i was extremely impressed with the movie this shane carruth guy pulled together with a $7,000 budget. i wouldn't call it an important film, but it's certainly an inventive one that will require some thinking after viewing. it ends up being science fiction, but along the kubrick lines, not your typical hollywood science fiction bullshit. i'd say more, but it's the sort of film that you don't want to go into knowing too much.

a plus is that it's really the sort of movie that i think most people could sit down with and enjoy. it's bright without being too pretentious, gritty and real without really trying to be hip and stylish. it strikes a good balance of a lot of things, probably due to the fact that the film was actually made by one person

i don't really know an awful lot about shane carruth, but i hope he does more things. he's got talent and some brains, and the drive to work alone. as long as he doesn't get gobbled up by the hollywood machine(and his lack of any other projects since is an indication that he doesn't really have an interest in that) he's really got the potential to be the leading american filmmaker going further into the 21st century, if only due to there being a staggering lack of any other proper candidates.

EDIT:
also if you are an aspiring filmmaker, this is a film you must watch. it's a reminder of what you can do with the proper drive and preparation even if you don't really have any resources available to you whatsoever. it's actually making me reconsider the stance i had on film, which was NEVER MAKE A MOVIE EVER TOO MUCH HASSLE.

Mule Skinner Blues.

My town had a drive-in style film festival last night, and we watched this.  It's very different from anything I've viewed before, filmed in a documentary style, capturing the lives of a few geriatric Jacksonville trailer park denizens.  I'm pretty sure these are all people just playing themselves, little acting involved.  It focuses around one eccentric guy's dream of shooting a horror film there in the marshes.  It starts out pretty funny, just going through these people's lives in a tongue-in-cheek manner (most of them are country/blues/rock musicians at the local dives).  About halfway through, it takes an eye-opening turn, delving into everyone's personal demons (Vietnam, alcoholism, vanity) and their methods of coping.  It goes into creativity as an outlet for these "demons".  This Vietnam vet is talking about the horrors of war, and then starts talking about how guitar solos are his way of "filling the hole" in his heart, all in front of a blue-screen nuclear explosion montage.

So yeah, I'd recommend it, for a good laugh if nothing else.
