the shining is one of my favorite movies ever.  it inspires a huge amount of crazy conspiracy theories mostly because kubrick was a perfectionist so it's hard to tell where intentional cues and references exist and where something like the time codes or continuity errors are really just coincidence.

a pretty good reading of the movie that delves deeper than the surface but doesn't veer too far in to conspiracy is this one:
http://www.drummerman.net/shining/essays.html

hidden meanings aside, kubrick does any awesome job at creating a haunted house of a movie.  the performances are disjointed, the colors and patterns are alien, the geography of the hotel shifts imperceptibly, and the soundtrack is powerful and unnerving.

That's pretty cool. I remembered that it was Kubrick's idea to put it on an indian burial ground, which was not the case in stephen king's novel, but I didn't make all of those connections. A lot of it makes sense. I thought the movie wanted to say something about idk I guess the awful historical heritage of western civilization, things like the holocaust and slavery. stuff that has really shaped our perception of the world/still has a huge effect on the art we make and the aesthetics that appeal to us (abandoned wasteland thread)

I don't think that article mentions Penderecki's music used in the film, which is actually about the holocaust/wwII. like white ppl suck is kinda an old story (tho still good), but I see kubrick going a little outside of that & talking about the contemporary uhhhh ghosts of our past, eg Jack's "white man's burden" joke, the setting in an isolated/abandoned beautiful hell... idk if anyone agrees or if this is pretentious! something about the dog scene too I forget

and yeah the soundtrack is really good, the orchestral stuff and the al bowlly song, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhj867TUpZY which inspired the caretaker project http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Caretaker_(musician)

I remember we talked about that awhile ago and between that and 2001 space oddysey there was some site that a guy ran and he did essays like that and some video presentations with tidbits from the movies as examples. It was pretty awesome. I love stuff like that.

watched Prometheus and sorta liked it. there are a million and one dumb thrillers about The Hubris Of Knowledge where scientists start out trying to answer big questions about universe etcetera and then everything falls apart and they all get eaten. this is basically the same thing but the later parts had a kind of narrative / tonal incoherence that i kinda liked and that seemed at points like a weirder, more pessimistic version of the formula, where it's not just the people who get pulled apart but the plot as well along with any way of making sense of what's going on. there are around 25-30 minutes in the second half of the film that are just mounting scenes of preposterously lurid, incoherent violence and body horror that don't tie into each other at all. nobody brings them up again, they dont really further the plot, they have no connection to anything, half the cast seem unaware that they ever happened or at least don't show any kind of awareness of it. All of the characters act for increasingly arbitrary reasons and everything happens too quickly to process or impact at all. This is jarring considering the first half was relatively slow and character driven. I liked it because of that juxtaposition but it doesn't last, there are around four endings in quick succession where each is less interesting than the last.

I wouldn't really recommend it to anybody, a lot of the writing and characterisation is bad and scattershot and it all makes less sense the more i think about it. But i liked those 25 minutes and thought they kind of hinted at a better, bleaker film. I also liked the robot peter otoole / david bowie.

edit: most of the aliens stuff felt kind of goofy too or sometimes just pandering (remember this thing. its back. we brougt back the thing) but i dunno where else they could have gone with that since i'm not sure why it was in the film at all.

YES. I know the android dude had some kind of hidden agenda with the old guy but he was just walking around pressing buttons and doing any random thing he felt like. Then all the "scientists" are apparently retarded because they just make every terrible decision possible. Guns? THIS IS SCIENCE WE DONT NEED GUNS. Helmets? LETS TAKE THEM OFF BECAUSE WE'RE SCIENTISTS. Alien creature that looks terrifying? LET ME TRY TO PET IT I'M A SCIENTIST.
yes coulombs are "germaine", did you learn that word at talk like a dick school?

Prometheus can be summed up in four words: awful script, awesome style. I sincerely hope that Damon Lindelof never finds work in media again after how he has ruined Lost and this movie.

well i guess the script on that must not have turned out too well either since they are coming back to glasgow later this year to reshoot a lot of the film.

edit: oh right, he's the one been brought in to fix it. well i guess that's going to be a really bad movie then!

I hope not. I hope he somehow flukes and turns it into something good. After reading it and how the story is segmented and told through different narratives maybe that and the whole thing BEING WRITTEN ALREADY IN GREAT DETAIL will make it harder for them to butcher it?

I just started reading this book and its incredible.

Edit: Ugh this guy is horrible. How in the fuck? Like the only stuff he's done that isn't shit might be star trek and I haven't seen the second one which he produced himself so it might end up being garbage?

He's a writer and his favorite work and only work I even see him talking about is steven king that might explain why his shit sucks so much.

Hey, hey, I like Stephen King.

Also, this Damon Lindelof guy works with J.J. Abrams a lot. Hopefully they aren't pals or something and he begins tagging along on all of Abrams projects. He's supposedly the reason all the seasons of Lost from 4 and after suck.

whetever if you like it thats one thing but to say he's one of the best authors to have ever lived is completely disgusting.

Its like saying lost is the best show ever and its the well for all of your inspirations. Your inspirations are a product of turds. What do you call turds of turds?

king is considered very good within the genre, though I wouldn't know because the only thing by him I've read is a graphic novel that's just a bunch of pictures of decapitated pigs

I watched American Beauty for the first time.

Excellent film. However, I deeply disagree with a lot of its messages.

Ah fuck it, let me explain, the inherent idea of the movie seems to be that there is beauty in the world and we should just be happy for that, despite the fact that eventually all of us are (probably) going to cease to be. I'm not a nihilist (or at least I don't think I am) but there is no such thing as beauty really. Its just a mental and cultural construct. And these days even that construct is being broken down so that what we are left with is "everything can be beautiful". Beauty, in any context, isn't something we as individuals, or as a species, should aim for. We should aim to be happy, and make it easier for those around us to be happy, for as long as possible. Anything else is just an individual's manipulation of that basic concept, sure sometimes people only go for one of these general ideas but I like to think most people go for all of it most of the time. They just frame it differently.

Existence is not inherently special. Nor should we think that is something to be sad about. We SHOULD probably be sad that we will eventually cease to be but IDK some people don't seem to think that for some reason.

I'll admit I literally can't comprehend the idea of being OK to just stop existing. That is not something I can even begin to relate to. I don't even know how to approach concept in order to relate with people who think that, at all.

There is a fuck load of other stuff I want to say something about but I'm to tired now and I can't even really remember so fuck it.

Don't get me wrong though, the movie is EXPERTLY made, cinematic-wise, character-wise and plot-wise.

Next time I'm watching American Psycho. Haven't watched that either. Actually I haven't watched American Pie either. I wonder how many movie titles have "American" in it. /dumbrant

I know but the stories he constructs and the criteria in them...are just so fucking boring. It, Cujo, misery etc... I get what he's going for and how he's doing with it but its like saying LOOK I CAN SWIM and standing in a kiddie pool. Its just really really fucking lame to me. Theres nothing controversial or progressive about what he's saying or how he's saying it. I guess I'm looking for more depth behind it? more of a philosophical standpoint or something to make me give a shit? I've yet to find it. Maybe I just appreciate motive and meaning more than the actual words and their placement themselves?

I did like the stand though. I'm using the word "like" very loosely when I say that.

I don't think so dude. There are things that are inherantly beautiful. A sunset, a sunrise, a starry night, even the way certain aspects of nature and life just seem to fall into some kind of organized fashion. Take a pitcher plant for instance. Its a carnivorous plant with funnel shaped petals that lets off a scent that attracts insects into it so it can consume them. That is so awesome. Thats beautiful. The way that thing just evolved and adapted to life around it, the way it grows and prosphers out of consuming a creature that more often than not's sole purpose is to advance decay and consumation.

Especially human beings though. Sometimes. The way we act individually and socially, the way we adapt and more often than not end up doing things that conflict with our very existance that put us at a disadvantage because of our own mental condition and obligations. Thats beautiful.

To ignore all that shit and be like "beauty is undefined and arbitrary" is a pretty monotonous way of looking at things. I also don't think that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". Thats horseshit. Thats our own personal willingness or unwillingness to recognize certain aspects of the world around us.

I've never seen that movie but I prolly need to. I really liked the music, I even had a couple songs off of the soundtrack on my ipod at one point.

You'd have to go into a sort of "to cut ones losses" way of thinking. Imagine going down a road, so far down this road you've walked and seen nothing but various things you didn't like and actually tortured you in a way. You know that this road is the only road you've ever known and isn't likely to change, its just the way it is. So far you've learned to live with what it carries you through but after awhile of looking forward and seeing nothing but the same shit that has felt like an eternity of trudging through, you make the decision to save yourself the trouble. I'm not exusing this behavior or saying theres anything right about it. But thats the kind of thought pattern you have to empathize with to "get it".

Not to be confused with emotional suicide which is different I think. Its usually the product of immaturity and impatiance which is why you see alot of melodramatic or sick teens doing shit like that, I think.
