I saw In Bruges the other night. Pretty funny, never thought I'd like a movie with Colin Farrel, much less Colin Farrel's CHARACTER, but there you go! I found the final 30 minutes felt like a departure from the first hour, but overall was still a pretty enjoyable movie with some unexpected comedy.

I saw the wrestler on sunday night, that it was pretty good. Had I seen it before the oscars I don't know that I would have still thought it deserved an award. I really liked watching Rourke the whole time, and I enjoyed the way he kind of created a persona even outside of the ring, but about 2/3s of the way through the movie it seemed like they ran out of ways to display the wrestler's lifestyle, and his interaction with Marisa Tomei just wan't very interesting. Also it was an extremely depressing movie when he was not wrestling.

Afterwards I found Cop Land on cable for the thousandth time and watched it all the way through. I actually enjoyed it alot, and for the first time, I actually liked Sylvester Stallone in a movie. What I didn't like was Ray Liotta and Robert DeNiro. I get the impression that since the Goodfellas and the mobster movies that came around then, the two of them get called on to be in any movie that involves the mob. I guess play to your strengths but theyre are only so many ways to dress a pony.

Ah, movie night. I love it when I get a day to myself. I took in two movies on Sunday. One was, by far, better than the other, so we'll start with the shitfest that was:

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li is a movie about Chun-Li and... you know what? I'm not even going to bother. This movie was BAD in every way possible. The writing was horrible, the acting was just awful, casting was whacked. I love it when movies film on location and, in this case, the movie was filmed in Thailand but that couldn't even save it. SF fans ought to be crying FOUL at this bad perversion of established SF story. Aside from the obvious 'Chun-Li is supposed to be Chinese', there are so many other odd things about the story that I gave up caring. Bison spoke with an Irish accent, despite being orphaned in Thailand when he was a baby and, apparenly, Charlie Nash had a falling out with his shower because he seriously looked like a greaseball (note to Chris Klein: not bathing doesn't make you a gritty tough guy, it just makes you smell funny). Even if you changed the names of the characters and did away with the SF name, this movie would have still sucked. Honestly, do yourself a favor: Get SF4, play through the arcade mode a couple of times, scream out random cheesey movie lines and BAM! You've outdone the new SF movie. For all of its campy awfulness, I FAR prefer the Jean-Claude SF movie from the 90s.

On the other side of the movie spectrum is Revolutionary Road, the story of a young married couple (nailed by Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio) in the 1950s who are basically falling apart at the seams. The movie examines a lot of conventions of the period; marriage, children, male and female roles in society, almost nothing is safe (I say almost nothing because religion isn't really talked about). The supporting cast is, for once, more than strong enough to prop up the main characters; Michael Shannon turned in an amazing performance as the whack job John and Kathy Bates is just, well... Kathy Bates. Even with their performances, though, the strength of the movie comes from Winslet and DiCaprio. Seriously, I was worried about seeing the two of them together and having flashbacks of Titanic but I had nothing of the sort. I was amazed by how well this movie sucked me in and held on to me. And I will admit it: I cried at the end. Not a couple of tears, either. I cried hard. Leonardo DiCaprio made me cry. This movie was absolutely beautiful and I highly recommend it.
Check it out! I'm doing NaNoWriMo this year!

zack and miri make a porno. my flatmates went to see it and said i wasn't allowed to come unless i promised i wouldn't make fun of the movie, so i downloaded it instead.

there's something about it that i can't quite put my finger on that makes the whole thing really disturbing! it seems like the overarching theme was to address the difference between 'sex' and 'fucking' and that's why they drop F bombs like they're going out of ffffashion. because at the beggining sex is something you do in your apartment in a bed and fucking is something you do in a bar or an old warehouse, but then they realise the truth: the thing that makes it special is who you're doing it with. awwww.

it seemed like the messages were aimed at kids. the scene with half a dozen product references at the beggining to different porn things and a fleshlight seemed very LETS SQUEEZE MONEY OUT OF MORONS but they had those two guys that show up in all the kevin smith movies so i don't know maybe the whole thing was just aimed at really dumb 20 year olds.

holy fuck just watched Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. i had no idea what to expect but this was incredible. i have not taken any of these crazy psychadelic drugs like mescaline or ether or even acid or whatever but MAN, that seemed realistic as hell. I didn't know what was going on half the time but that is the beauty of it, I think. I expected the film to GO somewhere and really take off in terms of some final epiphany but it never came. However, it being a film about this disgusting crazy side of drug culture of the 70's, I think I prefer it as this long chain of drug-induced chaos than as something attempting to make some philosophical point.

I haven't read the book, but I've heard good things about it. Gonna do that soon.

I don't even think they took psychedelics. Just alcohol, weed, coke, heroin and ether; stupid shit like that.

I think it was more of a look at what the Vietnam vets were getting into after service but that might have been another lie on their part I can't really remember too much of the movie, but I loved it.

Also I loved Depp, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that was one of his best performances . I got a friend (who doesn't do drugs) that speaks and acts alot like depp in that movie and I can't watch it without thinking about him and seeing him spouting out depp's lines and completely trashing a hotel room in a haze.

They specifically mention mescaline several times and the blotter paper is pretty visible when being consumed early in the flick. Other than that, I'm fairly sure there's some DMT in the movie though I'm not sure if this is correct.

Also the narrator voice of Hunter S Thompson (Johnny Depp) also mentions the acid kicking in iirc. It's been a while since I saw it so I might be wrong about this.

Last was Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. It felt long, but in a good way. I've been watching the series on bluray all week, and this last one is the best of the lot by leagues. There were two moments that nearly killed it for me though: When Dumbledore escapes capture by the ministry, he uses Fawkes to vanish. And the one wizard guy going to catch him looks sly to the minister and says "You may not like it Minister, but you gotta admit... Dumbledore's got STYLE."
It was cringeworthy. Then of course, they slid Hagrid's half brother in nearly right after and it was just painful to watch... Then it picked me up again, put me on my feet and said 'there there' for the rest of the movie. By the end, I had forgiven the film for both moments.

On the plus side, this being the best of the series, I was glad to find out David Yates will be directing the next 4 films (the last movie is 2 movies); so Potter fans will get to enjoy quality films without last minute freeze frames of Harry going :D on his broomstick.

Just saw Revolutionary Road.

I'm a Leo Dicap. fan, he's such a powerful actor. But man, this movie was down right depressing! It was great, but as I finished it, I was hoping for it to go on, till I get to see a happy ending, which I knew wasn't coming.

I didnt realise this was out already.. I knew this would suck though but for it to be even worse than the old 90's version, wow not even I thought it would be that bad.

Phonebooth - This is such a great movie, its rather simple and everything is done in one location but its always fun to watch.

Since I am in this thread, I may as well be honest.

Raise Your Voice

Now, I know it's a chick flick, and how I ended up watching it is  story in itself, but I have seen it a few times now. First time I saw it, I thought it was just another dumb pop singer movie. But after seeing it a few times now, it's not half bad. They could have done without Hilary Duff, but she wasn't too bad an actress for the storyline. Lots of improvements could have been made, but it still some how tugs on my heart strings!

I still don't reccomend seeing it though lol Shh!

I think the worst of my disappointment came from the concept of 'what could have been.' Granted, Street Fighter is a fighting game and, therefore, the source material is somewhat scant but for crying out loud, it seemed as if the writer's only experience with Street Fighter was a quick glance at the cover art. In fact, it didn't seem as if anyone in the movie actually knew anything about the source material. I understand that Hollywood is trying to turn a profit, but constantly perverting our favorite game franchises into hot messes is awful. How about this: Make the Street Fighter movie based more on established Street Fighter lore. Find actors who actually look almost something like what the video game characters do and let them all have a go at one another. Violence sells. Bad special effects, cheesey acting and horrible story does not.

The first Street Fighter movie from the 90s had all of the same problems as the new Street Fighter movie had. Bad casting, bad acting, the works. However, that movie was, at least, hilariously bad to watch. The new movie didn't have any moments that could be construed as unintentionally laughable. Bison's accent could have been a laughable saving grace, but it sucked too badly to be funny.

Kristin Kreuk's experience with Street Fighter was watching a few people play it shortly before filming.

But, considering the box office performance of this movie, I'm finding it REALLY surprising that Capcom is going to continue with more SF films.  Why?  Because people are still buying the old one.  The difference is, no one's going to be buying this years from now because from what I've heard it's not funny whatsoever.  I kind of wonder if they made this one shit on purpose hoping people would watch it for that, but that's way too much of a financial risk for them to do that.

Anyway, there already is at least one good SF film, and that's the animated SFII one.  There's no reason they can't do the same thing live action, they just won't.
