Colossus: The Forbin Projectridiculously dated, but a neat movie. i kinda think it was the precursor for the disaster movie genre, and it's kinda interesting to see that general formula done in a way that isn't meant to be as fucking ludicrous as possible. not a movie i'd really recommend to most people, though. it's really made for people who really dig the patchwork style of movies from the 60s and 70s.
for what it's worth if you liked the movie
wargames you might want to check it out; the filmmakers later admitted that wargames is pretty much colossus but with matthew broderick instead of a slick german dude. actually that's probably not fair, as joshua is a lot more endearing than colossus, but still it's really the same idea.
also a really good print of this movie is
on youtube if you're curious or have a little less than two hours to throw away on a movie.
actually i saw a whole bunch of pretty good movies lately, the best of which was
the china syndrome. really goddamn cool movie. manages to cover a rather deceptively complex array of topics in a really short amount of time. it probably spreads itself too thin to be a really GREAT movie, but it's still really good. it's kinda dated for the most part, but whenever jack lemmon and wilford brimley are on-screen you get completely sucked in and forget about the 70s goofiness of the movie.
what's probably the most interesting thing about the china syndrome is that it was the first film to really cover the idea of nuclear meltdowns and, incredibly, came out less than two weeks before the
three mile island incident. really ridiculous coincidence.
