saw the politically abominable 'skyfall'
FOLLOWED BY SPOILERS:
the movie justifies the use of secret, violent, accountability-free tactics by mi6 for any/all missions on the fact that someone they themselves trained, financed, enabled, and betrayed is now an enemy, along with other 'shadowy' and 'unknown' forces. judi dench is a rumsfeld/bush_sr/bush_jr hybrid in this story. the only thing that sets bond apart from the villain is his patriotism ("britishness"), sexuality, and lack of surname 'rodriguez.' just totally insane how the endorsement (or ironic criticism?) of the u.s. war on terror flew over everyone's heads. furious google searching led me to:

Cabin in The Woods.

I liked it a lot. I'd say more but honestly its a movie you should see knowing almost nothing about it.

Ruruoni Kenshin the movie. It was ok I guess though it served as a reminder not to get my hopes up from friends' comments about the movie. It was decent but I kind of expected more and it was a let down that they changed that arc and removed some scenes that were key of that arc. I won't mention so as to not spoil anything.

Also, the music is horrible

it had the exact same politics as the dark knight. skyfall was heavily influenced by the dark knight (it that in many ways the stories are near identical). although at least batman wasn't unironic support for shitty war-on-terror politics, but instead was a watchmen-esque criticism of how dumb the concept of superheroes are.

i feel bad for daniel craig. layer cake was a great movie and he deserved a much better career than this bond bullshit.

I skipped the dark knight rises but I don't see how this was what the first two movies were about. i always wished this is what batman was - the story of a crazed lunatic billionaire guy who thinks he can be king vigilante and eventually he gets his comeuppance and is totally rejected by society for legitimate reasons (as opposed to him being rejected but secretly having the moral high ground). i want to see a superhero movie where the whole point is to condemn the idiot who goes around beating up people and acting like he has the last word on justice. rob and kill bruce wayne.

well, yeah, the dark knight was a lot more ambiguous than that. the movie wasn't overtly condemning superheroes, but then what you're suggesting sounds difficult to pull off without coming across as really ham-fisted.

my favourite thing about skyfall is that all the badguy computers look like my computer. oh no, hackers! also the bit where bond spots a "secret message" in what is otherwise a stream of hexadecimal numbers which includes letters past F.

also the entire time i was watching dark knight rises, imaginary zizek (not that i am worlds #1 zizek fan/expert) was whispering "look at ze ideology" in my ear. i was interested to find that he actually did review the film. (i'm sure whoever cares already knows tho.) i thought skyfall had basically the same setting as dark knight rises. it seemed like it was taking place in the same imaginary social landscape.

You might like the new 52s reboot of Batman comics. Bruce Wayne being put down and finally realising Gotham isnt his city nor was it ever was.

Just watched Django Unchained. It was awesome. Though that rap soundtrack was so out of place.

watched scorsese's hugo. tolerable as a movie for kids i guess. something to show them if you want to indoctrinate them into being a rabid unconscionable movie fanatic. for grown up people it was just another silly movie about movies that we don't really need.

I wouldn't know what movies to introduce to my future children. I've always been a fan of Studio Gibli films, but I wouldn't want any of child of mine to become complete weeaboos.

Les Miserables. i shamelessly torrent the dvd screener for it I was expecting to be disappointed since I did kinda oversold it for myself, watching all trailers many time, listening to the movie ost, watching all sneak peeks and lurking in the imdb forums for the film.

Anyway, I'm glad to say I wasn't. It was awesome. I kind of understand the concern with the weird camerawork but you'll get used to it as the film progresses. It's not so bad but it does feel kind of bland, like if they have gone to such stylistic approach in doing it then there was still some grandiose kind of thing that's left out, we never get the 'epic' feeling especially on the revolution part which the 25th anniversary concert gave me goosebumps everytime I hear it, and that's just on the stage. The film pales in comparison.

Also, I was really happy with Hugh and Anne even before I watched it and was expecting the same from Russell Crowe. However, he was the biggest disappointment for me. I was rooting for him as Javert but imo he didn't give the character justice. It wasn't even his voice or singing (though his offbeat style does make me cringe) but just his acting.  :fogethuh:

Overall, it was still satisfying and just remarkable. Will gladly watch it in the big screen.

I would make my kids watch WarGames over and over until they learn how to hack NORAD

I'd probably not be restrictive at all on what my kids watched if I had them.

I watched Seven Samurai last night finally and it was probably even better than I hoped it would be.  I can't believe it's taken me this long to see it but BETTER LATE THAN NEVER.  Tonight I'm watching The Tin Drum wish me luck

Seven Samurai was breathtaking. I used to own the Criterion Collection DVD with commentary that really increased my appreciation for the cinematography, acting, and various techniques used.

I just watched The Long Goodbye, and it has really solidified my love for neo-noir, the 1970s and early 80s revisit to noir style of the 1950s, especially Chinatown, and the films with a sci-fi spin (Blade Runner, Brazil).

I watched Dredd again last night. I still like it. Not as much as I did in the cinema (i was drunk wow), but I enjoy the atmosphere of the movie a lot, and the sense of propulsion the soundtrack is always giving everything even if visually there isn't that much exciting going on a lot of the time. I think I enjoy this movie because it is all the pleasure of the idea of you know, The Terminator as a good guy without pretending this kind of motherfucker would hesitate to murder and do brutal things because you've got to be a violent disturbed psycho to do those things.

It's just a good action movie.
