Ok, I've been putting this off for a while. But I'm a big procrastinator and I'm sick of it. I put everything off till the last minute. Every new semester of school I always get pumped up and want to get everything I can do out of the way, but I always end up slacking off. Paper due in 2 months? I'll do it the week before, I mean the weekend before, I mean the day before. The worst part is that this doesn't just apply to school. This applies to all aspects of my life. At work I put everything off till the last day (mind you I can easily put it off till the last day, but still). I even procrastinate watching movies and shows I want to watch that I have on my comp. Sometimes I get pumped up and want to actually accomplish something! And sometimes when I'm pumped up I set very achievable goals for the what I'm going to do the next day, but rarely complete them. Other times I'd wake up the next day and completely forget about how much I wanted to actually do something.

This is making me miserable and I can't seem to find a way out of this loop. I want to accomplish things and not go to bed everyday thinking about how I wasted the entire day. I wish I could find out what was making me randomly inspired/pumped up and bottle it. help?

:(

Procrastination is like masturbation; it feels good while you are doing it, but in the end you realize you've just fucked yourself.

To attribute more to this topic, I want to let you know that I am the same way. My procrastination is so bad, that sometimes I won't even do what I am assigned to. When I have a paper/project for school, I will wait until the last night. I had the whole semester in my last semester of high school to do the product section of my senior project, but I waited until the last few days. I had an english paper due last Friday; I did it 6 a.m. that morning. So yeah, I am in the same boat as you - I wish I knew the reason I am like this!

Best way is to tell someone that you're gonna do something on a given day, that way when you sack it off you look like a wanker cause you went against your word.

How the fuck is that the best way to do it, crumply? That doesn't teach yourself anything, well, not much.

I'm basically exactly like you, aztec. I procrastinate so much. The only way I get things done is if I have huge motivation, for example nacksters premium competition. I wanted Premium, so I managed to finish the animation I made for it.

Likewise with his competition, specifically this Sci-Fi. I want $100 USD, so I'm making something for it and I'm definately gonna finish it.

Set yourself a goal, and try to find motivation. Give someone trustworthy something of value, and say that they can't give it back to you until you've finished your goal. Give yourself a reason to complete the goal.

I have also have a big problem with procrastination. The only way I found to fight against it, at least as far as things like papers/assignments/projects were concerned, was to do them the day they were assigned. If I couldn't get it done in that first weekend after it was assigned, chances were I'd fuck off and end up either half-assing it at the eleventh hour or not doing it at all.

As for procrastination in your personal life...I think it takes something big to shake you out of that. It is just too easy to get complacent about there always being time later...until the bottom falls out. My recent wakeup call was when someone I had been really into for a long time got married. I'd known her for twelve years and never tried going out with her - I always figured, eh - I'm in a relationship right now, or eh - there will be time later. If someone had walked up, smacked me in the head, and said "Hey, dumbfuck, what if there is no tomorrow?" I might be a happier person right now.

Actively pursue finishing projects as soon as you get them. The second you start procrastinating, you feel like shit the whole time, and that just negatively programs you to keep procrastinating. The only way you break through habits like this is to just siddown and do the work. :< It's no easier, or harder, than that.

The good thing is, you can actually beat a habit like that in a matter of a month or two if you really, really try. Then it would feel crappy NOT doing the work. So yeah, just get through the month doing as much work as possible. It'll also help you to schedule things right, and you'll even have time to do -- and ENJOY -- the things you want.

EDIT: Did you come up with that quote, Omcifer?
"I would be totally embarassed to write this, even as a fakepost. it's not funny except in how you seem to think it's good. look at all the redundancies, for fuck's sake. "insipid semantics, despicable mediocrity" ugh gross gross. I want to take a shower every time I read your prose." -Steel

Man, this topic reminds me of how lazy I really am. I have signed up for several GW contests and have never participated because I would always put it off. Hell, I bought two games last week and haven't played them yet! I bought Zack and Wiki for the Wii like a year ago and I haven't even tried it out yet, same goes for a few GBA games I bought a few months back! In High School, I rarely did homework and rarely studied for anything. I stay at the computer all day and basically do nothing! Jesus Christ my life is going down the shitter! I had better start studying harder in school so I can make something of my self, fortunately I have all As so far. *sigh*

Yeah, I wouldn't care that much if this was just me putting off a paper, but it affecting my personal life like this makes me realize I have to make some kind of big total transformation change. But I don't see how I could change anything. It's like I'm stuck in my "comfort zone" and don't want to do anything that affects that. I've tried setting goals and stuff but to no avail. I'm an Art Interest, so this is really going to fuck me up when I have a ton of art projects to do. Right now I've done like 4 projects this semester and waited till the last day to do them. I was actually getting my shit together and I worked many, many hours on them. But after my last project I just kind of gave up and went back into my comfort zone.

Maybe I could set an alarm at a certain time each day to turn off everything and work on something (anything!) for an hour or two. Then slowly work my way towards real change.

Procrastination affects everything I do. I can't think of anything that I have not done on the last day. I want to do something, but I always tell my self "No, I will do it tomorrow." It's pretty bad, I think that If I don't change soon, then my life will turn to complete shit and I'm not even joking.

Yeah that is an amazing quote Omcifer.

I'm such a fucking procrastinator. I think many people are to a pretty big extent. It develops when you're young. My younger brother is so lucky... he always comes home and does his homework right away. That shit is going to carry with him the rest of his life and he's going to go places.

Yeah that's what it was like with my older brother. God this is depressing.

Just make sure the alarm doesn't have a snooze feature. On nights I have band practice, I set my cellphone alarm for a time which would allow me to do my exercise routine, wash my dirty dishes so I don't have to touch them at 2 in the morning afterwards, take a shower, and have a nice leisurely drive to practice.

Then I snooze button my way through an hour and a half and end up flooring it down the interstate only to show up twenty minutes late.

I think you guys need to stop GWing as soon as you get home from work/school. That's a nasty habit, too.

The internet in general is a bastion of procrastination.

Well it doesn't seem to really matter what is going on around me. I loaned my computer to a friend of mine for two weeks. I had no IM, myspace, email, or anything else to waste time on. I expected I'd get a whole bunch of things done around the house...nada. I wrote one song and slept a lot.

I'm pretty good at getting my shit done ahead of time and I find it very easy to prioritize things in my life so I can achieve my goals!

... heh... looks like some folks got it...

... and some folks don't(you)!

I'm really bad about it too but I find it alot easier to get shit done and actually feel MOTIVATED when I'm living alone or on my own. Like I need to start working out more often and learn guitar but I just can't do it when I'm at home which is why I probably need to move out or leave soon.
