So currently I am learning to drive mainly because I wanna see my grandma and cousins again you know, since I have not seen them since my parents sold the car because my dad could not drive anymore since he got really ill and I wasn't even old enough to drive and my mom didn't want to either. So the purpose of this topic is to ask for tips on driving, what was the first thing you realized that you did wrong? When did you pass your driving test and how old were you? Did you pass out of sheer luck or was it because you can actually drive? So stuff like that would do nicely, so go ahead discuss...  :fogetbackflip:

Idk I found driving pretty straightforward! I passed my driving test pretty easily. It's not that difficult, you should get the hang of it pretty quickly.

How old are you?

I received my permit and started to drive in April '08(this year), then I received my license in June. I was 18 when I passed the driving test; it was on my birthday, actually. I passed because it was super easy, and driving isn't too bad. When I first started, I was always afraid that I would crash but that has yet to happen. You have to drive defensively, because even though there are set rules on the road, there are many idiots out there that fail to adhere to them. As I said, I haven't been driving for very long, but I will give tips on what I do know:

-When a light turns green, just check quickly to make sure no one is going to pass the red light and hit you.
-Always try to go a few miles per hour below the speed limit, that way you are less likely to go over it.

There are many more things to be said, and you can find a lot of rules and such in a driving manual(if you have one, if not then go to your local DMV and ask for one.) Follow all of the rules and drive defensively, and you should be fine. Good luck.

I got my license when I was 17. It's pretty easy imho but some people don't find it such. Maybe if you can you can take a driver education course.

Heres a tip: Assume all other drivers are fucking stupid, and be a defensive driver, not an aggressive one.

edit: You don't know what people are going to do, even if they signal make sure they slow down and commit before you go (even when its clear). Obviously you have to use discretion, as if they are far away you don't really have to.

edit edit: speeding: yeah its illegal, and on your road test DO NOT SPEED. Insta-fail.

Most police will not pull you over for going 5-10 (km/h) over on a "regular" city street. But it depends on location, circumstances, and so on. Just saying, not condoning speeding heh.

I'm pretty bad at driving because I know a few people who have died and I've had a minor crash myself so I guess that has made me a semi-paranoid driver. I'm horrible at directions and lazy about parking as well heh

Everyone in my community gets so pissed when people drive the speed limit, especially in the morning. RUSH RUSH RUSH RUSH. It really depends on where you live and how nice the cops are.

As for myself, I'm 17 and I haven't even gotten my permit yet because I'm a fag and I haven't had the time for it. I use the bus to get to places. Smelly, slimy, old bus.

yeah here you can go 61km/h (in a 40 zone) before the RCMP will nail you.

One of my buddies friends is a cop and told us one night, but the town police will get you :( People around here get pissed when people drive the speed limit here too.

I never (legally) learned how to drive but I do so anyway (ilegally). My ride is a four wheel heart attack customized to cut no slack, and I'm street, street lethal. Poundin' down the back roads higher than a steeple.

Street, street lethal.

Come and watch me ride

Use common sense, use your turn signals, and use your mirrors.

You just have to pay attention. It is fairly basic, because I think they beat you over the head with it in the book for the written test, but make sure to control your follow distance. You can't control people running up on you behind, but you can make sure to leave enough space between you and the car ahead of you so that if the guy pulls a dunce move and jams on his breaks for no reason you don't end up creaming him. Now, if you are driving in certain areas this process can come back to bite you because sometimes people tend to drive like a lunatic asylum was handing out day passes with car keys attached and will try to cram three cars into that two car length opening you're leaving. It comes back to knowing your surroundings.

I passed my driving test the first time. My only deduction was for not using my turn signal at each step of the three point turn, and I knew better, I just forgot to do it.

Check your blind spots before you go into another lane. And try to *heh* stay under, the speed limit lol. Sorry I go 20 over whatever the posted speed limit is, cause i got the need for speed. Almost 4 years doing that and I have yet to get a ticket.

If you are making a turn, you CANNOT turn into the far lane! Turn into the lane that corresponds with your lane or you WILL GET A TICKET.

If you are in the US.

I got my license just a month ago. Driving is really similar to riding a bike. Once you get used to it, it's easy. At first I was terribly nervous every time I got behind the wheel, but it went away after awhile. If you're nervous, you just have to realize that the only way you'll learn to not be nervous is to suck it up and get out in the busy traffic and just drive.

I was in a crash (on my way to driving school!) some months ago when I was on my permit. Luckily, it wasn't my fault. Some woman made a left turn at a light and didn't yield. She pulled right in front of me and I ran into her. It was very scary, but I was fine. The car, however, was totalled.

So yeah, just assume no one else knows how to drive. You can only rely on yourself on the road!

if you EVER do that on the highway (especially in the pass lane) you will piss everybody off. don't do that. go the speed limit and you won't bother me (some people though) but don't go under.

Well, over here the system works that you sit a theory test, get your first phase Learner Permits, pass a practical test, get your second phase Learner Permits, do 25 hours of supervised driving, then you get your Probationary License. The practical test is what everyone freaks out on here.

I got some of the best advice a while ago, coincidentally AFTER my practical test.

While you're on your permit, you're learning to pass your driving test. After, you're learning to really drive.

That sounds pretty tacky now but idk, it's kinda true!

Don't talk on your cellphone and fiddle with the radio while driving. It's distracting. (for other people who you hit)

Also whoever mentioned that you drive defensively and assume everyone else is a fuckwit is dead on the money.

I thought cops didn't pick you up unless you were like 6/7 over or something, because of varying speedometers? I know down here in Aus they give you 10% of the limit before they'll pull you over.

that really depends on if the cop feels like being an asshole or not. and if you are not retarded and are capable of doing more than one thing at a time than you should be fine with the cell phone

:fogetbackflip: Woot for one I made a topic where people actually respond. Yeah I'm 18 years old but I'm currently trying to find a job so I can pay for my driving lessons, I've already paid for 10 lessons in advance. But yeah that is new to my ears 'drive defensively' my instructor has never said that to me.
