Same here.

I don't really get a chance to drive. My college is like opposite to my dorm (10 minutes walk) And I don't own a car.  Now I think I forgot how to start the engine...

How to get a driving license in my place : give some bucks to the officer, answer a theorical questions in an answer sheet that already answered (so you just have to write your name), then skip the practical test, give your identity card (or fake it if you don't have one), take photo, then blam! you get your driving license!

And there's actually no speed limit on the street, you can go like 150km/h with the cops doing nothing - as long you don't hit anything. But the cops' really insane. They'll suddenly jump from bushes/dark corners to stop you and make you pay for like, passing the red light (while it's actually green) and stuff like that. My fav part is the race to avoid the cops - feels really great if you can run from them, which is very rarely happen.

Oh, an advice : avoid anything with 4 or more wheels.

I appreciate people helping me out here it seems we have a lot more drivers in GW than I thought. One thing though since I'm currently learning driving I keep on stalling and don't have good clutch contro...sometimes I also react too slow because I didn't see the situation ahead of time.

Fun fact:  I ABSOLUTELY couldn't do parallel parking during my test, so the instructor stepped me through it just so he could pass me for that part.  After I did it, he just goes "People almost never really use this, don't worry about it."

I was a lot less nervous for the rest of the test.

Also when the test first started he asked me to check my left and right lights, but he asked for them separately and I reversed them both times.  I can do signals (and DO use signals all the time, don't forget these btw) but I don't think about left/right when I'm using them, it just makes sense WHILE you're driving.  For some reason, thinking about it with the car stopped and someone saying left or right just wasn't clicking in my brain.

The important thing was that the worked though so whatever.

that should come in practice but whoever said to practice in places with not a lot of traffic, was right - especially with a standard (when your starting off). I first learnt just going around a parking lot for a few hours.

And learn how to merge properly. you have to speed up to merge and get out of the merge lane as soon as you can. it's pretty fucking basic but so many people fail to merge properly. So also watch out for people who don't know how to merge properly, especially certain commercial drivers.
and i don't think it's been mentioned, but on top of SUV drivers, look out for sports/luxury cars. Especially mustangs. Mustang drivers are the worst drivers on the road because they're either A) too rich to care or B) spoiled daddy's girls or C) white trash.

Does Pacific Islander count as asian?

This is off topic but usually you are supposed to check "Hispanic" if there is no check box for Pacific Islander right?

Are you from Russia or something? I've heard that in Russia and other eastern European countries with corrupt governments, you basically have to bribe officials to get anything done. Need a license? Bribe. Need a building permit? Bribe. Get stopped by the cops because they're low on cash and don't need a reason? Bribe. It has become the modus operandi de facto.

My one piece of advice when learning to drive: learn on a manual. It's the best time to learn how, and it's more fun. Sure, driving an automatic is way easier, but it also lets you slack off and get distracted because you don't have to focus so much on driving. At the very least, go ahead and learn/get your license on an auto, but learn to drive a manual at SOME point in the near future. You never know when you'll be in a situation where you REALLY wished you had the skill.

My absolute worst driving pet peeves that people do:
1. Signaling after/during a turn/merge instead of before. If you're already turning, I don't need you to signal because you've already gone ahead and done it now, haven't you, fucknut?
2. Making a turn into the far lane instead of the proper one.
3. People who can't wait 5 seconds for me to pass them on the highway, and just HAVE to get in front of me in order to pass someone else, when I am obviously going faster than BOTH OF THEM FUCKING COMBINED.

I had to do my roadtest twice.
The second one I did nearly flawless on, the examiner closed up his marking sheet and put it down, then was like "OK NOW JUST BACK INTO THIS PARKING STALL AND WE'LL HEAD INSIDE!!" and i like went in crooked and hit the curb. He said something along the lines of "i expected better from you..." but he didn't bother to mark it down.

I rarely drive now, because I don't often have access to a car. I also get a cheap bus pass from school (whether i want it or not), so, I rely on transit, although it is somewhat shitty around here.

So the purpose of this topic is to ask for tips on driving, what was the first thing you realized that you did wrong?

Be black.

When did you pass your driving test and how old were you?
17. One year after I got my permit. :)

Quote
Did you pass out of sheer luck or was it because you can actually drive?
Nope. I had plenty of behind the wheel time with my mom before I took my test.

You should take the driving test using an automatic, get your license, then learn to drive a stick later. Less hassle.

Seriously? That's messed up.
"Yeah guys let's not bother wasting ink making boxes for an ENTIRE RACE OF PEOPLE. They all look like mexicans anyway."

I'm Filipino, so I always check 'asian' even though most of us think we're Pacific Islanders. But if they don't have the 'asian' box (they generally do), I check hispanic. Fricking Spanish people sailing over and raping our people.
"I would be totally embarassed to write this, even as a fakepost. it's not funny except in how you seem to think it's good. look at all the redundancies, for fuck's sake. "insipid semantics, despicable mediocrity" ugh gross gross. I want to take a shower every time I read your prose." -Steel

Juris said it: if you can get an automatic to take your test in then do it, because having a manual shift is a whole other set of possible dings against you. If you are forced to take your road test with a manual (it can be done) make sure you don't coast to stops. Stay in gear as much as possible. I doubt you're splitting gears so you have to learn how to clutch properly (as opposed to double clutching which is the biggest pain in the ass). Also, take the time to learn how your car sounds. With practice you'll be able to shift without really looking at the tachometer and the gear selector will become part of your arm.
Check it out! I'm doing NaNoWriMo this year!

Yeah that's the thing sometimes I got into the WRONG gear because I don't really know the gears off by heart but it's becoming less common now because I've had a bit more practice.

My driving instructor said you can practice on your playstation you know with the steering wheel and brake pads and play a racing game like gran turismo, has anyone tried it? Does it work?

One thing I forgot to ask after the test and the examiner asks you to drive back and if you make a mistake or a big mistake will it count towards your mark?

Man not to get suddenly philosophical but the best thing about learning how to drive stick is that you feel way more in tune with your car, and so more in control. After driving stick for five years, the occasional times I drive an automatic I feel so disconnected with what's going on, because I can't feel the engine vibrations with my feet and hands, or any sense of actually DOING anything except steering. And like Belross said, it's way harder to lose concentration on a manual, because you're constantly braking, accelerating, clutching, shifting.

I've got a friend, a huge car nut, who is so good with a stick shift he can drive normally without ever using the clutch for anything except braking and first gear.

Also it's good when one of your friends drives stick and he can get drunk and you can still drive him home because you were patient enough to develop a passive skill.

Yeah, I loved San Andreas, but it was just such a black game. :x Like. Eh, I dunno, it was all so frickin' black, and I enjoyed the atmosphere of Vice City more.

The only hard part about driving is parallel parking, you don't need to worry about anything else. I got a permit right now and could be getting my license soon so I kind of know what your going through. Also, Gran Trusmo won't teach you shit about driving(I have tried it).

It's pretty easy. Stay in between the lines. Watch out for people. Go when you're supposed to. Practice driving intoxicated in a controlled environment before taking it to the road.

I got my license the same day I bought my car and I hadn't really driven at all.  Got my license, bought my car, drove on a highway for my first experience in a long time.

My instructor has said that being perceptive and reacting fast is what is really needed once you have mastered the contols of the car, I'm guessing he meant controls as in clutch, gear, steering wheel and etc.

Oh, I have a driving-related question, too (sorry to derail)

but does it really matter if I go for my automatic licence and never go manual? Most people I know have been trying to convince me to go manual, but I don't really see why (apart from being able to drive a manual car).
Upon arriving the attending doctor could find no abnormal physical symptoms other than extremely dilated pupils. After spending several hours terrified that his body had been possessed by a demon, that his next door neighbor was a witch, and that his furniture was threatening him, Dr. Hofmann feared he had become completely insane.
