XP with the windows classic theme was the best looking windows ever.
No it's hideous, it really is.

Man I remember before I had XP (I had ME before XP, I think 98 before ME, and for sure had 95 before that (then of course 3.1)) how I would always try to make amazing color schemes with windows and they'd all come out looking so godawful because I'd have gradients between two completely different color (or FIRE COLORED which always came out bad too).  Compared to how I made things look, that grey looks fantastic.

I dunno, I like it a lot better than anything else Microsoft has done since. I'm all about really BASIC shit: my favorite UI was the Mac OS9 classic.

It seems like the flashier and more colorful a UI gets, the less impressed I am. Skinning and themes are a complete waste of time IMO.

Personally I love the OS X theme, but the mac equivalent of Window Blinds is called ShapeShifter. A quick google search indicates that there's at least some interest in a Vista theme for it, but I wasn't able to find anything (I also wasn't looking too hard).
I'm actually downloading ShapeShifter (C4M FTW) for the Illuminous theme.

Actually that Crystal Clear theme looks pretty swank. I think I'm going to give that a go!

Man, uploading that picture of the Mac OS 9 GUI to Wikipedia was the best idea ever.  Every single time a blog or article has done a story on user interfaces, it's had my name plastered all over it.  Just look at the bottom menu.

Also yeah I'm a big fan of the Mac OS 9 interface.  Though it's not as sophisticated as the recent Mac OS X interfaces, which have a few more years of research on it, it's still amazingly useful by today's standards.  I also really don't know why they got rid of some of its better ideas, like the tabbed windows.

the problem arises in motivating me to go out of my way to install them. I really don't see a problem with it at all, it's worked for me since NT 4.0.

Though I run Mac OS X now, I still run Windows in a sandbox alongside it for various reasons, and I keep it on the "classic" theme.  Not just like Mama Luigi's screenshot but also with the Windows 98 colors and with anti-aliasing turned off.  I actually wouldn't mind having the old 16-color icons back.

This is simplicity.

I always loved the colors and icons of Windows 3.1, especially the icons in Paint.

I installed Windows 3.1 on my Mac (through DOSBox) just so I could see those great colors again.

Well, two out of three graphic designers voted for simplicity (I use the classic theme for exp DietCoke posted) so that has to count for something!
