Hey guys,

Not sure if this is the place to put it or not (feel free to move it to IGD or G&DA or something, I guess?), but I saw this earlier while Digg and a little bit of me was like "Hey wow these are GW games".

http://www.gamesradar.com/f/the-best-free-games-to-play-this-holiday/a-200812091054793016

If you check through here, you'll note that there are two GW celebs in there; Barkley is in there, hardly surprising given it's made the rounds of the internet. As a surprise, one of cactus_squid' game is also up there! Cactus is a highly underrated developer around here and I know whenever there's something new out I'm already downloading it.

So yeah, congrats guys, etc. Barkley's already made the rounds, but it's cool to see someone else from GW featured. Maybe in a few years we'll see even more of our guys make it into stuff like this!

EDIT: wow, this is a pretty useless topic now that I think about it

Cactus is actually WAY better known and received outside of gamingw. His game Clean Asia was pretty popular; he even went to the finals in two categories at IGF last year with it.

cactus rules dude go cactus !!

Cactus's new Mondo game, ToG's Barkley and the Banana Nababa remake (the team of me, frankie, bisse and phlog) are all submitted into this years IGF by the way. http://www.igf.com/php-bin/entries2009.php?start=0

edit: also play 'gunlimb' on that list you posted if you get a chance. it was made by a friend of mine called radnom and it's pretty enjoyable

yeah, even though cactus posts his games at gw, i wouldn't really consider him a gw guy. he's probably the most prominent gamemaker guy out there. one might even say he is the "darling of the gamemaker community". he pretty much deserves any attention he gets because he is def. one of the best game developers in the indie community. he's my favorite game dude.

aaaalso i'm really surprised because i don't really play that many games, but i've played a lot of those games and they're pretty good! i want to point out the mirror's edge 2d game that's up there. i've played that a lot recently and it's super fun to mess around with. movement is the most fluid i've ever seen in a game in it. it's nuts.

tbh i've never heard of eternal daughter; it looks cool!  i've kind of been wanting an rpg/platformer/ys-type game to play.

I spent like 3 hours playing 2d portal last night. Only got to level 40 before I realized there was no code option or anything and if I didn't beat it I was never going to.

Most of these games are very good though! I hate to say it, but Barkley seems a little outclassed.

ahahah, yeah, especially in terms of graphics. that's kind of why i don't think we'll even make it to the finals in the igf. look at every single game that's ever made it to the finals. they all have really great graphics and barkley looks like it came out over a decade ago. i don't know man, if barkley had better graphics i think we could make it but uh, unfortunately even the indie community cares a lot about graphics!

yeah man, a lot of these games look outdated.  i think the problem is less that your game looks dated and, like konix said, more than it's very obviously full of graphics you stole from other games.  that in itself is probably enough to keep you out of the finals, regardless of how good the rest of the game is!  imo they're not wrong for doing this, either.

it would have been extremely difficult for us to convince anyone to actually make graphics for the game, how many artists are going to pour all this time into a game like barkley? unless they knew it would be a hit of any capacity (ie. PSYCHIC POWERS) this is very unlikely. the thought ENTERED MY MIND but was quickly swept away by the fact that the project had very limited appeal to prospective GRAPHIC PEOPLE and my previous bad experiences in getting artists to do anything at all. barkley wasn't exactly a small project either and this means even if we got SOME GUY odds are they could not deliver on the work. i'm sure chef probably thought of this too and came upon a similar conclusion. i don't think there is anything we could have done to fix the graphic situation. as shitty as it sounds barkley was basically destined to have rips.

i pretty much agree on this basis alone it does not deserve to be any where near the top of any category at the IGF.

It's ridiculously hard to get (or make) complete original graphics for an rpg, it's almost too much effort. You're almost out of luck unless the scale of your rpg is very short and small. There are some games that make exceptions, but it's generally much easier to just make something else like a platformer with your time.

By the way great job guys. I also played the Mirrors Edge 2d game, it was incredible.
