So I am a senior in high school here in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and I decided that I wanted to go to college. So. Since about May, I've known that I really wanted to go to Penn (University of Pennsylvania right here in good ol' Philadelphia). So I decided, hey! I'll apply early decision. Early Decision, for those who may not know, means that you apply early (obviously), generally deadline is November 1 and the college gives you a decision by mid-December. Early Decision is binding, meaning you have to go there if you're accepted unless you apply for financial aid and it's not enough for you to attend (not to be confused with Early Action which means you just apply and it's not binding so you're not required to attend once accepted).

So, I sent in my application mid-October. I asked 2 teachers for recommendations (and due to some mail mix-ups, one didn't get there until about 10 days ago), sent my test scores, I had an interview, my parents filled out financial aid information, and on Tuesday, I received an email saying my decision would be available online at 3pm Friday (yesterday). So through a couple days' anticipation, yesterday afternoon finally came. I asked 6 of my closest friends to be there, 1 of which had detention and couldn't, but whatever. It ended up about 20 people crowding around the computer in the college guidance office. So, 3 o' clock comes 'round. F5 F5 F5 F5... LOG IN PAGE. So I logged in and lo and behold, I've been accepted into Penn! Cue celebration, right? You know, lots of hugs, my friends lifted me up and carried me down the hallway (I have weird friends), all great stuff. I come back into the office to thank my college guidance counselor and she looks at me and says, "You don't look very excited." And I was excited, it's just that... well, I went back and checked the financial aid they gave me. They gave me virtually nothing. Not nearly enough for me to go there. So I called a bunch of people, told lots of people that I got in and everyone was happy.

I went home, and today showed my dad the financial aid summary. He looked at it and told me exactly what I knew he would: that it wasn't enough. There was no way that my parents could afford to send me there with only that much.

So, what do I do? Conveniently and somewhat comfortingly, I have an ex girlfriend with whom I'm still good friends whose mom works there and said that generally if early decision accepted students call and you know, talk to the financial services people, and explain the case, they try to find a way to cover whatever difference there is. So on Monday, my dad is gonna call and see what he can do. But obviously that's not a sure thing. So what do I do if they don't give me any more? Penn is my top choice, I mean it's why I applied there ED. I really want to go there. I put a lot of work into applying there and I mean, I don't know what to do. Everyone else is much more excited about this than I am and I really can't enjoy it, because I mean, sure, it's a great accomplishment to get into an Ivy, but what good is it if I can't go there? It's really upsetting.

I don't know if anyone can help me, but maybe someone else has been in a similar situation. I'm willing to take out student loans and pay them back after college, but there's only so much I can take out. I mean it's just so much money and my family doesn't have the ability to pay it. I really want to go to Penn, but I also don't want to ask my parents to take on a burden I know is too much for them. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm open to anything and everything. In advance, I thank you for your help. This is really what I want to do and I'm willing to work for it and try to find a way to do it.

To be honest I really don't see why would you apply early decision, since it's pretty common knowledge that it often ends in problems! I hope everything works out even though college is like the biggest scam in the universe.

Btw, I got accepted to Temple and if I go we can chill.

The Peace Corps has a loan forgiveness program that you might be able to take up, depending on what type of loans you use. See how much Fafsa'll give you, too. In California we have a "BOG" program where the governor waives the entire cost of tuition for certain students -- maybe they have something like that in Pennsylvania. Finally, if you're unable to pay remember that Early Decision isn't binding.

It might be better for you to take up community college for two years to get your general ed done, then transfer over, especially if money's a problem.

Expensive. And you might compromise your education if you don't speak Japanese.

Doktormartini you can still apply to transfer for your last 2 years but you should like really get in on that.

That’s right, you have the young gaming with the old(er), white people gaming with black people, men and women, Asian countries gaming with the EU, North Americans gaming with South Americans. Much like world sporting events like the Wolrd Cup, or the Olympics will bring together different nations in friendly competition, (note the recent Asian Cup; Iraq vs. Saudi Arabia, no violence there) we come together. The differences being, we are not divided by our nationalities and we do it 24-7, and on a personal level.

We are a community without borders and without colours, the spirit and diversity of the gaming community is one that should be looked up to, a spirit and diversity other groups should strive toward.

yes because I really didn't know what I wanted to do so a couple of semesters I took whatever was interesting that I wanted and it didn't go towards my associates but after next semester I'm getting my associates.  Now I know what I'm doing I'm staying here longer to get science classes that can transfer out of the way.

I know someone who's been here for 5 btw.

It looks pretty sustainable if you're working part-time. I'ma prolly end up the same way. I have NO IDEA what I want to be. Seriously, this past semester I've gone from Law to Engineering to Polisci to English to Computers, et al. I just hope I can choose a decent fricking career if I go to a 4-year.

Dude I did the same thing dok and it's dawned on me how much that screwed me over now. I took almost all my core classes at community college. Now I'm at KSU as an Art Interest. I only have three non-art classes I can take and still have a couple of years left. I have to take another Math, Science 1, and Science 2. So this semester I'm taking the Math and Science 1 (can't take 2 without 1) and Drawing 1. I need one more class, but I don't really have anything else I can take so I have to find some crappy easy class. But yeah, pretty much nothing but major art classes the next couple of years. so many projects.

yeah $1000 every three months. chump change.

my first semester costed over $2000 counting books and my second semester looks to be about the same. that's a lot of money to just be dicking around taking HISTORY OF THE JEWISH CONSPIRACY 101 which will never transfer anywhere.

umm how about getting a part time job and paying for yourself?
Relying on parents to pay for college/uni is pretty gross, and you should feel bad by expecting them to help. If they're well off then they might do, but you shouldn't expect it. It's your life, you should work for stuff.
Get a part time job and get non-extortinate student loans from decent companies. I don't know what it's like for you, but here you only have to payback your student loans when you're earning over 15k a year, and then it's just small monthly payments that you don't really notice.

I'm earning about £3-4,000 a year at work and get a £3,000 a year loan (also luckily being quite poor I also get £3,000 a year given to me for expenses like materials and books and shit) I have minimal free time (about 3 hours mon-fri, 1 hour saturday and 4 hours sunday) that isn't spent sleeping but it's worth it in the long run.
Uni is really really time consuming. Especially if it's an hour+ journey to/from every day (last friday it took me two hours to get home for example)

Financial aid is determined based off your parents and what they are expected to pay so DISGUSTING is kind of strong when it isn't until you are like 23 or something when you are considered independent and your aid package goes up a lot. If your parents are really well off you could get fucked very hard if you had to pay for it yourself. Especially Penn! And I think expecting someone in High School to have saved up tens of thousands of dollars is absurd! I dunno if he gets reduced tuition for being in-state but college is expensive and FA is tied directly to your parents so
