Aren't the planets suppose to be aligned on that day? That would be something interesting to see since it only happens once every 1000 years.

Pretty sure that's a quote from The Simpsons or something.

Not sure what this means exactly. Though I know I didn't make up that something is going to "align".

"Our galaxy has a centre which all the stars take millions of years to revolve around, and it is located in the starriest part of the Milky Way, as seen from Earth. On four occasions within the 25,800-year cycle our galactic centre aligns with the sunrise of a solstice or equinox. The last time it occurred was on a fall equinox 6,450 years ago, approximately the dawn of Old World civilisations.  On Dec 21, 2012, which is a winter solstice (Northern Hemisphere) this centre will align with our sun once more. Jenkins presents a mass of astrological, monumental and mythological evidence to show the importance of this event for the Maya, and how their calendar runs out on this day for a reason. Unfortunately he is not sure what that reason is."

The world has been around for nearly 4.5 billion years, which means the Mayan cycle has happened roughly nine hundred thousand times.  Way more if the calendar refers to the entire universe.  Seeing as the world has yet to end on a cycle, I don't think we've got anything to worry about.

Nobody gets my obscure references... But they're probably not funny anyway.

it is the 21st and it doesn't necessarily mark the end of the world, just when the mayan's decided to stop their calendar.

It makes sense to be that date because I think the 21st of Dec is the day where the sun is lowest in the sky in most of the world. So it kind of rounds it all off, seeing as they worshiped the sun.

Also, 25th december is when the sun rises again. One of the main reasons Christmas is a pagan holiday to worship the sun returning to us or being born again. (Jesus being the son born on this day too)

Well I hope I'll be going about my normal life...I don't believe that the world will end then, and my simple reason is:
The Mayan calendar ends then, right?  Well the calendar on my wall ends on December 31st, 2008.  Does that mean the world is going to end then?
And how would the ancient Mayans have been special enough that they could figure out the exact date of the end of the world?  Or the universe, even?  Plenty of people have made predictions about the end of the world, among other things, and plenty of people have been wrong before.

What I'm sort of afraid of though is that the millions of fanatics who think 12/whatever/2012 will be the end of the world will do all sorts of crazy shit then, and who knows what could happen?

Crazy thought...what if the Mayans didn't feel like making their calendar infinite, and just decided to stop writing theirs in 2012 when the planets align cause that was a spiffy time to end a calendar (you know, a time that's not completely random).

Cause seriously, an infinite calendar might be cool, but it'd be hella hard to make, and even harder to hang on your wall.
