That's what I'm going for, kinda. There will be a central area the player is free to explore from the start. This is where he can take side jobs and get missions that are part of the main quest. I'm thinking most of the missions themselves will take place in separate "levels", so I can focus them around each individual set of objectives, but allow the player to free roam them after they are unlocked so they can go back and get stuff they couldn't access the first time.
I'm using a psuedo-cyberpunk setting. There is no xp, but the player earns money for each mission that they can use at cybernetics shops to upgrade their character's abilities, or buy off the company mercs that come after you if you suck and get caught a few times.
I needed a break from character design and trying to make backgrounds for my starwars game as well as fixing all the main character sprites for Way of the Gun.
