I'm hoping that since the economy is bad more small businesses in my area will consider advertising and/or selling their product online.  I could make a killing setting up websites+online stores for some of these places around here.

My dad's doing fine running a small business. My mother got fired a few months back, which basically means she just got on pension a year early, which suits her pretty damn fine. I just began my studies in a university, am moving away from home and considering taking a student loan, so I just checked the Europian reference rate Euribor:
In addition to this, if the economy maintains a reasonable cycle, by the time I'm graduating we'll be going uphill nicely and everyone's gonna be hiring. The only bad thing I can think of is that summer jobs are gonna be a pain to find, but that's really nothing new here.

Don't wanna sound gleeful or anything, and Finland probably hasn't been hit half as bad as the US, but personally this recession suits me disturbingly fine.

Oh yeah, and rents are down as well.

I didn't read every single post but I did read more than half.

My own personal theory as to kick start the american economy is to being spending again, the government spend into the mortgages and help create jobs with larger companies that usually employ larger amounts of people at reasonable wages. Next the people once they have jobs they need to stop being afraid to spend that spare dime, if your not putting money into the economy how can you get money from it?

Last, create last savings rituals, 100 years ago people were way better with their money, not quite tight asses but they knew how to spend, how much to spend, and how much to save to more than survive. Nowadays we are not so fiscally smart and we need to relearn how to conserve and save our cash like the good old days when recession didn't really exist. (I know some reasons were that there were only national banks and no or just starting stock exchange but that shouldn't really matter, it's the principle.)

Woah, bud. The first economic recession in U.S. history had nothing to do with saving right. In fact, no recession has ever had anything to do with saving as you said earlier. And the first recession in America? It was in 1797, and the reason was because the Bank of England had suffered deflation, and the United States suffered from using a national bank system. And as for stock exchanges, informal ones have been around since the 11th century, and the first official stock exchange, where stocks could be traded, began in London in 1688, but stocks and bonds were issued about 80 years prior to that.

Last time this happened, it took a good world war to pull everyone out.  so who's going to step up and try to take over the world again?

I'm sort of interested to see the effects of CEO banking trends on the economy.  It seems to me that a large group of people with millions of dollars of income every year pouring American currency into offshore banking accounts would have a pretty negative effect.

that is deplorable

I remember hearing about alot of people killing themselves in the depression but thats pretty shitty to take your own families lives like that. I guess he figured they couldn't survive without his sorry ass.

Well, I did mean just the US and Canada when I posted, the english dependant slump wasn't up to the NAmericans to create nor fix.

But I still have the distinct opinion that if we continue to buy and sell and support the smaller businesses our economy can start to grow again. If we keep the money here, spend money here, and invest money here all I can think would happen is growth.

And that article of the Man and his family of 6 is frightening... people are going overboard because of the crisis... survival is likely since recessions tend to end at some point.

Heh, this recession is hitting the UK pretty hard too. Our currency is being devalued - like I saw a Warhammer site that suggested importing shit from the UK as it's actually CHEAPER here to buy in dollars than America now! Weird man, weird. Albeit slightly lame to be looking at Warhammer sites and shit.

But yeah, jobs are becoming increasingly scarce here. I live in a major city, so it's not a massive problem here, but I have a few friends who are on hard times. Thankfully I'm employed by the CIVIL SERVICE (I'm a teacher, doy) so, in actual fact, I'm one of the few people advantaged by the recession. Properties are cheaper, goods are cheaper and my job is totally secure - it's not like they lay teachers off because a school loses money! So yeah, on a selfish note, I'm actually quids in.

However, on a more serious note, our Prime Minister is getting blamed for the recession in its entirity, and is going to lose the next election because of this. This really sucks as (in my opinion) he's actually a really decent guy who has socialist leanings. These leanings, however, are being blamed for the recession - "IF GORDUN BROOWN WULD HAVE SAVED SUM MUNAY INSTEAD OF SPEND ON HOSPITULS AND SKOOLS THEN WE WULD BE OKS NOW!!!" is the attitude of the day really. Our Conservative party looks set to win in 2010 with their plan of slashing public spending. This means most people will have less money AND shitter services. Good times!

Thankfully I blew my credit rating to shit while at uni, so the "credit crunch" isn't directly affecting me either - I don't live on credit, I pay for everything up front. While this makes my cash less flexible, it means I'm not in a position where I own anything I can't afford.

Hooray for me!
Hey hey hey

I'm not one to usually advise violence but that is a guy I would try to walk up on in a parking lot if I were you or your friend.

it costs almost twice as much to buy comics now then it did this time last year :( This means I can only afford 1 or 2 comics a month :0 :O
I got reduced hours at work because of the recession, which means I've effectively lost two months wages per year, plus even though we're beating our targets there is no chance of a bonus or anything.
My wages mean I get £30 more than living/transport costs per month, so all the entertainment I can buy is 1-2 comics and a weekly cup of tea/biscuit from the SU cafe. Which is really gay when your buds can be out getting pissed/stoned whenever they want because they're middle-class fucks.

How so? Banks make enough money without theirs

They don't usually throw them into offshore accounts. Most put their money to work for them investing in other companies, which is even better for everyone than hoarding it in a low-interest savings account

that shit fucking sucks and I hope it doesn't happen but I kind of believe him...
