You can hear Letterman say "Good job" to Joaquin at the end of the interview. He was most likely in on it. I'm pretty certain that this is all for his mockumentary that is to come out in 2010 about how stupid people have become due to the media. He is renound for being a method actor after all.

nah, watch it again you see Joaquin take his glassess off and give him a warm hand shake and the tone of Letterman's voice suggests he was being sincere.

I'm sure Joaquin has a point to make in all this, will just have to wait for the documentary to be released. I think it'll be a really cool and funny experiment to see an actor stay in character constantly for a whole year, the documentary will be more like a movie in that respect

I've been in many situations where I've tried to be serious for a prolonged period of time. Somehow, I always end up laughing and then trying to cover it up with "something clever".

And that is exactly what Joaquin Phoenix did when he said "He's a funny guy" at the end.

yeah this would be a lot easier if it wasn't YOUTUBE and we could actually see if he was chuckling a little bit, it's hard to tell with youtube his mouth is kind of blur at that quality

also he seems pretty responsive depending on what Letterman is saying like with the gum he can do the joke with putting the gum under the table, and he makes sure to plug the whole thing where he's doing hip-hop now

but yeah I don't know I don't know much about his life/etc. but I know sometimes on late shows somebody just completely messes around with the host but I can't remember if it was ever like this

also his sunglasses seem kind of Britney Spears-esque if it is a joke possible joke right there
