Now that 2008 and the Oscars have passed, what were your ten favorite movies of 2008 (with honorable mentions) and what were the greatest disappointments to you? Please don't start arguments, there is no right or wrong answer and everyone is entitled to their opinion. Also, try to give a brief description of why you put the movie on your list so you aren't just name-dropping.

My 2008 top 10:

1. Slumdog Millionaire
-I can't think of one thing I didn't like about Slumdog Millionaire...it will definitely go down as a classic in time.

2. WALL-E
-Should have been nominated for best picture...my favorite Pixar movie.

3. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
-A lot like Forrest Gump, but I love that movie and Benjamin was excellent too.

4. Doubt
-Brilliant acting by everybody, especially Viola Davis and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

5. In Bruges
-I am surprised it didn't win best screenplay...I thought it was a very funny and smart film.

6. The Visitor
-A very touching story, great directing, and perfect acting by Richard Jenkins.

7. Iron Man
-The rare superhero movie that has a good story to it.

8. Tropic Thunder
-Exceeded my expectations...I thought I would hate it, but I really enjoyed it. Robert Downey Jr.'s performance was hilarious.

9. Get Smart
-Okay, it wasn't an Academy Award-worthy movie, but I couldn't stop smiling while watching it.

10. Forgetting Sarah Marshall
-The only Judd Apatow production I really enjoyed...it ran a little too long, but it made me laugh a lot.

Honorable mention: The Dark Knight. Although I thought it was mildly entertaining, I find it very overrated and liked Batman Begins much better. There is no denying that Heath Ledger's performance was incredible, though.

Movies that disappointed me were Cloverfield and the new James Bond, while the worst movies I saw last year were Wanted, Indiana Jones 4, and Righteous Kill.

6. The Dark Knight
5. Up the Yangtze (beautiful. absolutely beautiful)

I saw zero movies in theatres this year.  The only new movie from this year I saw AT ALL was Son of Rambow only because I bought it on DVD (didn't come to any of my theatres).  It was at Sundance in 2007 but apparently it wasn't put out in theatres until 2008 according to Wikipedia.

So apparently my list is:

1. Son of Rambow

....it was really good though!

The french guy was pretty terrible but I didn't think he really RUINED THE MOVIE by any means.

Alright here are some I liked from this year:
The Dark Knight
Let the Right One In
Be Kind Rewind
Doomsday

Those are the ones I found on my collection of cinema tickets from 2008. (and [rec], but that's a 2007 film)

However there are a bunch I missed and haven't been able to see yet that I think are good (there's usually more films I think might be good than those that are actually good):
Son of Rambow (looks great but was about one week in the cinema and that was when I didn't have time to go)
Happy-Go-Lucky (similar fate as Rambow, except later in the year)
Zack and Miri Make a Porno (This one had half a week in my local theater just now! But I forgot to go yesterday so it's another one missed...)
Hamlet 2 (This one didn't even get here. I wonder if even the DVD version can be found)
Wall-E (This one was mostly dubbed so I waited for the DVD release. It's on a table at my mother's since my brother got it for Christmas)
In Bruges (Similar fate as Rambow and Lucky)
Slumdog Millionare (Looks really cute and I'm looking forward to its release, which should be in a week or two. So it'll take a month or two to get to my town)
"I'm just a nationalistic Swedish-speaking Finn"
"Aivan, mutta suomalaiset juovat toki olutta."
I never forget an Insult nor do I forget a compliment.

i want to see you debunk No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood.

That’s right, you have the young gaming with the old(er), white people gaming with black people, men and women, Asian countries gaming with the EU, North Americans gaming with South Americans. Much like world sporting events like the Wolrd Cup, or the Olympics will bring together different nations in friendly competition, (note the recent Asian Cup; Iraq vs. Saudi Arabia, no violence there) we come together. The differences being, we are not divided by our nationalities and we do it 24-7, and on a personal level.

We are a community without borders and without colours, the spirit and diversity of the gaming community is one that should be looked up to, a spirit and diversity other groups should strive toward.

american history x is ridiculously basic in its treatment of race relations. hey...HEY THAT COP ARRESTED A BLACK GUY FOR NO REASON? AND MY FRIENDS DONT LIKE MY BLACK FRIEND?

TRULY THIS IS RACE.

it's all kind of dumb and stars that sallow faced Edward Norton who I can't really stand.

also I didn't see much in 08. lemme think. Dear Zachary, was that an 08 release? Dark Knight, Slumdog, Wrestler was 09 so forget that,  SUPERHERO MOVIE, Ironman, Wall-E. I've got too much old shit to catch up on.

no country came out in 2007

I haven't got round to seeing most of recent good movies that came out in Dec, but I'm seeing Slumdog tonight I think.

Burn After Reading was probably my favourite so far oh and Gran Torino cracked me up too, but I think it wasn't intentional

i've seen it do you want me to SAY SOMETHING NEGATIVE?

okay

no country for old men: I really liked this movie, some people hate it, I think they're dumb, but if I could level a criticism it's that it really does draw this overarching conclusion about THINGS...ARE SOMETIMES TRULY EVIL... which is dumb.

there will be blood: rosebud...

Wrestler was 09 so forget that
The Wrestler was 2008 but received a wide release in 09.

Ugh, I love that movie so much, it has to be my favorite for 2008. That is pretty much my "ideal" film, plus it was filmed mostly in Jersey towns a short drive from here. It dealt with all these issues that I've pondered over excessively, and gave me a new outlook on those wrestlers who sit around charging $20 for autographs at all the conventions I go to.

Again, if I could make whatever movie I wanted, it would would come out to be The Wrestler.
