Hey guys,

I've got into a band recently and the drummer loves hip hop but hasn't heard a lot of it (he was raised on metal). I'm making him a mix with hip hop/rap/r&b tracks with great drums and any suggestions are welcome!

Any rock/hip hop songs that are actually half decent are totally welcome as well. Even stuff like RatM since I haven't heard them in ages.

Tracks with drums that he could study and try to replay are better, but electronic stuff is good as well. A mix of both would be best. Different tempos and tracks with singers (or even samples for the hook) would be really useful as well.

Pharoahe Monch does it really well

Jedi Mind Tricks

I can only find stuff with just rhythm drum beats no solo stuff or anything like that and it might be synthesis or something but it still sounds like a drum set to me.

Yeah this stuff is really good guys, I've lost all my music so anything is good since I'm drawing a blank! The Roots are definitely gonna feature prominently.

Also DJ shadow is good for sampled drum stuff although idk if you specifically wanted something with rapping over it.

It's hard to pinpoint exact ATCQ songs that have particularly great drums but they're all good songs for a non hip-hopper to hear if he wants to get into it so I'm just gonna burn him paths of rhythm.

you could probably just tell him to make a steady beat that you can rap to, if he listens to anything other then metal he should get that and then work from there.

But yeah I never liked hip hop and just got into it (thanks to GWs) and I love a bunch of it alot. I even want to learn some flow so I can start making my own rap beats and stuff, it'll take alot of work for this white boy tho.

Why use a drummer to play rap/hip-hop when you could just make the beats on a drum machine or computer-engineer it? I mean, the rhythm hardly ever changes and it doesn't take much talent.

The only music that takes talent is really fast and technical stuff huh

I never said that. I said that genres like rap really don't require an experienced percussionist/drummer when you could just loop the same beats over and over again for you to talk through. Every other genre such as jazz, blues, country, and rock obviously require talents of a real percussionist/drummer since those forms of music don't always play the same musical rhythm over and over again in any song. That is why these genres are more distinctive and more deserving the aid of percussionists/drummers than rap.

try madlib/quasimoto/madvillain. they're all his projects and he uses a sloppy style.

even if it doesn't help, listen to this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPVAyoJc91k. drums are pretty sick here.

also, try "enter the wu-tang", their first album. the beats are simple, but they were a blueprint for alot of hip hoppers.
Django only had one finger, its as big as four cats, and hes got a retractable leg so he can leap up at you better and you know what?He lights up at night, and hes got four ears. Two of them are for listening and the other two are kind of back-up ears, and his claws are as big as cups and for some reason hes got a tremendous fear of stamps and Mrs Doyle was tellin me that hes got magnets on his tail so if youre made out of metal he can attach himself to you,and instead of a mouth its got four arses

oh hey, try GALACTIC! I just remembered they were a jam band first. get that The Corner song because it has gift of gab not totally sucking and he has an absurd verse where he raps like 30 lines without taking a breath.

the fuck are you doing, that's not what he said at all. how many rap groups even play with a drummer man. I will grant there's a good chance THE HUNTER'S METAL is coming from a place neither of us would agree with but he's not wrong. live bands are far from necessary in hiphop, and imho you can do a bit more cooler stuff with two turntables than with drums as far as hiphop goes.

now ptizzle did say R&Bish tracks too which changes things but he's not wrong.

sig is kind of bad tho...

his name is 'the hunters metal', i think its pretty fair to assume how far his open mindedness in terms of music goes! even how he says this:

LOOPING THE SAME BEATS OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN TO TALK THROUGH

or it could be something from an RPG??? face it ya blew it! rap drumming does not take much talent at all. beat making does but the basic ba-dum-tish can be done by anyone.
