achievements have the potential to be good but they're supposed to be, you know, rewards for doing tasks outside of the main gameplay.

running a hundred yard touchdown, beating a boss without getting hit, beat a roguelike while being a vegetarian, blindfolded, and atheist... those are achievements.  something that actually takes skill and practice.

mundane tasks like pressing start, collecting all the totally arbitrary collectible objects, beating the game, or watching the bath tub cinema thirty times aren't achievements.  eat a dick, devs.

welllll if microsoft and sony didn't make achievements mandatory for a game to be on their system it wouldn't be as big a problem.

well if game makers could take all of ten minutes to come up with a small number of achievements then this wouldn't matter, there are games that only have a very small number of achievements (i think there are some with just like FOUR of them or something), and they could be something as easy as "clear (level) with 100%" or things like that that don't always happen through normal gameplay

the problem is they think they SHOULD give achievements for things you do anyway, not that they have to meet an achievement quota

If Subterranium is the same game I'm thinking of (for the Sega Genesis, gravity space shooter?) then dude I could beat the entire game when I was 8.

Maybe you just suck a little?

Maybe, I just couldn't handle the having to refuel with limited fuel. And I kept running into walls, damaging myself. I always got to up to the level where you get the infinite fuel module till I ultimately died. That was a hard game.

chef-  yeah I forgot about using egress. Are those bird people any good at higher levels? They had great movement, but horrible attack and def.

Attack-wise they get better, if you can get them some good swords, but they're still susceptible to getting ARROW'D! to death. I stopped using them almost completely once Chapter 7 came around.

idk I think good achievements take a bit of time to create since you have to take game mechanics and balance into consideration. This means additional betatesting for developers, so I think a lot of them throw in a bunch of mundane shit they know work just because they are expected to fill their quota. I don't even think achievements work very well in some genres, so it only make sense for 90% of them to be unlocked by simply completing standard game tasks in some games.

Left 4 Dead

De-Raged (999g): lose all 5 rounds in a versus campaign by a large margin without rage quitting.
Empty Tank (50g): Die as the tank without injuring a single survivor, in less than 10 seconds.
Sloth is Sin (50g): Play a whole campaign where you never once save a teammate from a tongue/hunter leap in less than 3 seconds.
Nub Hunter (50g): Die from a crowd of zombies while wielding the useless sniper rifle.
Join Me in Hell (25g): With your entire team in one room, and a horde of zombies/tank on the way, set the whole room on fire with a horrible molotov throw.
Free Fall (25g): As hunter, miss a jump by a few inches and die falling off the rooftop in either of the last two levels of No Mercy.
No Insurance (10g): Don't take your health pack at the start of a level, with at least 2 team members screaming at you over the radio to do so.
Who needs friends... (25g): Get incapacitated from 80% life or more after running way the hell ahead of your group.
Where did everyone go? (25g): Get incapacitated from 80% life or more after lagging way the hell behind your group.
L4DC (1g): Get disconnected from a server while changing maps.
MOTHERFUCKERSONOFABITCH (5g): Miss a 25 point hunter pounce by inches, and die from a point blank blast from your intended target

I like the "achievements" in indie games. Like unlockable costumes and mini games and stuff or even having hidden/hard to get bonuses on each level like Jumper/Dim are what I would consider good achievements.
