Recently, I've been checking out Maudlin Of The Well. They're pretty cool and it's music based on the bands experiences with Astral Projection so it's pretty all over the place/avant garde styled. They only released three albums and then reformed as Kayo Dot but they are releasing an album next month which was funded by fans.

Here's a few clips, they all sound much different:

Anyone like them?

first song, sort of jazz meets sort of indie with lil' metal influences. i like it :fogetcoo- no wait, the rest of the song turned into DT. PFFFT

No but seriously, i listened to all the 3 songs and i sort of liked it. i think i dislike all the metal parts though because idk, they felt sort of POINTLESS in the entirety. like the nice atmosphere is sudendly crushed under mediocre heavy metal parts! and the vocals on those parts weren't anything special. if the purpose of those parts is to be AVANT GARDE or SUPRISING/CONTRAST then lol.

you know who'se avant garde? roy wood! well actually he's not but he has a nice/crazy taste.

you know who'se nice? Afura because he keeps up the good work in Music forum.  :fogetcool:

i used to really dig kayo dot but there's no getting around the fact it is insanely boring music.

wow, these guys really are diverse in sound and im already prefering them to kayo dot.

kayo dot are quite cool but as steel said, they're boring. Plus I feel this is generally more accessible.

Can't wait for the maudlin of the Well album. Kayo Dot are pretty cool but their latest album was pretty stale and I'm not horribly excited for the album they are releasing this year. Still gonna check it out though.

I like them man, I can kinda see the spiritual element in their music like I could imagine these dudes going into trances or whatever.

I really like both Maudlin of the well and Kayo Dot, though I'm actually still trying to get into them. I agree with whoever said that the heavy parts are really out of place and crushing the atmospheric parts. It's annoying because the softer parts are really insanely good, and the death metal bits are too straight death metal to be too interesting.

As for Kayo Dot, I got into Choirs of the Eye first, and on the 3rd or so listen it clicked, and then on the 4th listen, it unclicked again. I guess you have to be in the mood because their first album is really abstract and boring unless you're in a weird sort of mood. Their second is much better if only because there's more stuff going on. I think it's my personal favorite. As for their newest one, I don't have an opinion of it yet, but that could be because it's a tad unremarkable.

What's this talk of a new Kayo Dot album? I heard of new motW but not this....is there info on their site?

also check this if you're on the fence about KD:

How is it? Man I like the artwork style they use. I'm not gunna listen to it until I've heard all the older stuff first.

Based on the first listen...

It's their least heaviest album for sure. It has some heavy parts but basically no harsh vocals at all. And striiiiings, lots of strings. So yeah for a motW album it's pretty mellow. Sometimes the producing on vocals reminded me of Cynic a bit and overall it does kinda give a GY!BE/Kayo Dot vibe. It's good.

Yeah, new motW is pretty darn good. The last two tracks feels more like real motW to me, than the others. The string usage is pretty good in some of the tracks though, I have yet to see what's so bad about it.
