So in the Blue Dragon Anime Nobuo appearently worked with a guy named "Megumi Oohashi". This is probably the thing that led to him doing work on Guin Saga...alone...as the only composer...

To me it would be good news that he's working on an Anime but the problem I'm seeing is that the Anime looks...well not so interesting...at least compared to the stuff of the legendary magic he could program into Final Fantasys 6 through 9.

Is it true, though, I wonder? Is it completely true that he will for the first time ever compose for an Anime? I know that Hironobu Sakaguchi wants Blue Dragon to be the next Final Fantasy, so I know that Nobuo will be composing for all of those projects throughout the next 10 years or so.... Blue Dragon 2, 3, 4 etc....

I still have to wonder if he will keep composing for anime after this project? Anyone have anything more to say on the subject?

also wow I can't care about this news at all! he hasn't done anything remotely interesting for a while now and I honestly forgot he existed. I also don't see the difference between anime and game soundtrack in this case, so whatever!

I don't think he dropped off hard. If you really liked him, you'd probably still like a bunch of the music he has been making recently. I mean I played Lost Odyssey and while there were more stinkers (like, boring) tracks on that than say final fantasy VI, both games had the same kind of pop-epic sound to them alot of the time. The music all has the same structure, it always had, you know? I mean the only reason people think the Final Fantasy X soundtrack kind of sucked in comparison to VII or whatever was because X was recieved worse as a whole. The music is all the same and if you like the Final Fantasy VII soundtrack there's no real reason to say his later stuff just plain SUCKS cos yeah maybe his music veered in a kind of odder direction at times on Lost Odyssey there were just as many of those claaasssic Nobuo Uematsu tracks. All you can really say is the later stuff isn't to your taste or, more likely, isn't drenched in nostalgia.

I used to really like listening to his music when I was a kid, but it's all just kind of nauseating now. Mostly, anyway, there are a few tracks here and there which are still pretty cool but mostly it's all the same kind of stuff.

I load up a hand-drawn anime pic of Tifa, put on "Tifa's Theme" and then I just go ahead and lick my LCD monitor and that's me for a couple hours.

do you not distinguish between the quality of his work at all?  no, i wouldn't say it's all the same.  when i was 16 or so i played ffx and for the most part LIKED it and still did not give much of a shit about most of the music.  anyway nauseating is really strong and inappropriate because as far as VIDGAME MUSIC goes he's probably been one of the better composers, and even in terms of regular old music, it's not at all bad for what it is.

I absolutely agree.

Even people who don't like or play videogames can appreciate Nobuo Uematsu's music. I remember playing Final Fantasy 9 once upon a time while my father was in the same room playing Freecell on the computer. Beatrix's theme started playing and he said, "What are you listening to? That sounds really nice."

Pretty much shocked me because I never expected to hear an old fashioned bastard say that about Final Fantasy music.

Haha yeah okay I take it back. There is a difference but I don't think it's that huge between:

and

I like the first one better though.

I guess all I've got left is that differentiating between the two periods of his music in some sort of stylistic way like "He used to be cool now he is embarassing!", is probably not right. But yeah okay I thought about it a little and there is a difference in the quality of these lost odyssey songs and some earlier ones.

I had a similar experience with my dad once. I was playing FFIX and the Dali theme music was on. My dad said "jamie what is that godawful music coming out of your room" and I was just stunned. Stunnered.

lost odyssey was too much of a piece of shit for me to continue playing so i wouldn't know enough to rate its soundtrack, but i did beat ffx and idk that, at least, was lacking.  wait i'm listening to that song and it's not bad at all.  do you really find this embarrassing?  what part of instrumental soundtrack music could even conceivably be embarrassing when it's this inoffensive?  wait no the electric guitars just came in.  but that was an element of his music that i always thought was forced and out of place, if i'm honest.  the rest, though, i think is pretty good.

I mean I think I just feel stupid and so self-indulgent in nostalgia whenever I listen to his songs now, like I think I should be trying out new music which is less obvious and I dunno, cheesey I guess and not listening to that it's just like "ugh get it off...". I'm not trying to deny myself it anymore, that used to be it, but I just don't want to hear it cos it makes me feel yucky. It doesn't ALL make me feel like that but a whole lot of it. I do quite like both of those tracks though, apart from the guitar part which is ridiculous. Actually there is alot of that in lost odyssey.

like really, before the shitty electric guitars come in i think it's quite good.  it doesn't deserve to be in lost odyssey.  i don't really care much about soundtracks these days; it's not like any game is good enough that it really lives up to good music even if it has it.  all you ever think "wow this is good, i feel sorry for whatever sorry composer had to sell his soul and make music for this garbage".  i kind of wish uematsu was somewhere composing music and just not releasing it instead of this.  go fuck off to the swamp, nobuo

and i guess i could see you feeling like that, but it's unfair to pin it on his music.  that's embarrassment coming from the fact that you're sitting around listening to videogame music and being nostalgic about stupid epic storylines that for some reason you still find appealing on some level despite them being transparent and childish, not embarrassment coming from awful music.  it's a bit unfortunate that his music can be so sweeping and epic, though; it makes it difficult not to associate it with those ideas (as in, *looks somberly into the dusk sky, eyes fixed on something beyond the horizon* and other stupid videogame shit you used to have a boner for as a kid) and you always feel like a tool when you do.

Pretty much all of that I agree with but I don't know if there's anything so wrong with finding that staring off into the horizon stuff appealing, really. Cos what makes RPGs so awful isn't that, it's all the peripheral garbage along with pathetically written plots. At it's core a story about travelling around the world isn't so awful and that's what I always liked to do in those games, go from town to town. I never really cared what the stories were, whenever I was gonna buy one of those games I would look it up on the internet to check how many towns there were in it, if there was a world map, stuff like that.

I mean it is childish yeah but it's more about just having a sense of adventure which I think is fine. The problem is though, yes, that any kind of adventurous sentiment in this area gets lumped together with terrible character archetypes, jrpgs giving 13 year old girls size DD's and a thong to wear as a personality, terrible villains with big swords and all that stupid crap.

There are better ways to access adventure than sitting around listening to nobuo uemastu though, cos of the reasons you said about it getting lumped together (and also really some of it is just godawful and too much). Which is why even though I think I know what my "for some reason" part is when it comes to still finding slivers of these games appealing, I still get all cheesed out by this stuff. I just listen to non-videogame equivalents which is shit like folk music from other countries and classical music stuff like that which makes me think of strange places and people.

I think Nobuos either IX or VII soundtracks stand out the most within his career so far. He's most likely composing for Sakaguchis next "Really, really BIG!!" project so I guess after Cry On was cancelled he probably had some free time on his hands.

If theirs any soundtrack that needs listening to it should be Eternal Sonatas. That game is the fucken shit(Aside from some voices)it's soundtrack is amazing, considering it's a revolving around the real life pianist Fredric Chopin it had to be great.
