btw if you need to assign numbers to HMMM IM NOT REALLY HUNGRY MAYBE I SHOULD GIVE THIS SANDWICH TO THAT STARVING HOMELESS GUY OVER THERE, thats a problem with you and not with the idea that people weigh the consequences of their actions

that has nothing to do with cost/benefit analysis. well atleast for me. i just feel bad for the guy. besides the principles behind where you base your arguments i.e. the homeless guy doesnt deserve to be hungry, has nothing to do with cost benefit analysis. its your opinion

when your moral choices stem from seeking to do the greatest amount of good yeah you run into gross problems pretty quick once you get above the level of a one on one situation. also NUMBERS you are already using quantification for moral problems when you say something would be better or worse.

ENDS JUSTIFY THE MEANS would always apply using this, if the end BENEFIT is better than the sum of the COSTS then it's the RIGHT THING to do. whether this is stealing a loaf of bread for your starving family or some other horrible final solution.

since when has buying a cheeseburger been a MORAL choice? unless you're talking about spending money that could otherwise be spent on something else and yeah you probably do weigh in supporting the meat industry and globalisation etc?

tbh marmot i'd never even heard the term until you started throwing it around like you tend to do with most things.  im fond of the part where you say i didnt specify what i meant by assigning numbers to happiness when you wont shut up about it and i've only said that i don't think that's an appropriate assessment of what i'm saying.  i don't know what utilitarianism is; i don't even care!  despite you and ninjapirate's concerns about B....BUT WHAT IF A BABY NEEDS TO BE RAPED etc etc, i think this is an alright and minimally arbitrary (it's still arbitrary in that ya its my opinion that he probably shouldnt go hungry and there are no SPECIFIC NUMBERS that weigh into things but again, since this was initially comparing two methods of reaching a decision, degrees apply) way to figure out if you should be doing something that might be questionable.  at least until you turn into a gigantic faggot and start wondering whether maybe........the homeless guy deserves to be hungry.  go talk shit about how women shouldn't do science or something

i mean if you got a better way lets hear it brah but sorry climbtree im gonna keep doing this instead of just doing what the bible told me, thanks for the suggestion though

there are a lot of people who believe homeless people deserve to be in the state they are. i mean in my opinion they are awful but i dont go making huge frameworks of nothing for my moral decisions and claiming i am using..............reason. its pretty arrogant.

marmot perhapes you can teach me how to . . . be more humble???  nah i don't think it's very arrogant that i said i have a loose process for figuring out if i should do something if i am IN DOUBT.  especially when this is probably how a lot of people do it

the irony of the kid from some poor place in mexico scoffing at the rich american's education is kinda good tho

but i mean i don't give a shit about this kind of thing even a little bit.  i think the real arrogance is you pulling some condescending shit because i did not RECEIVE THE SAME EDUCATION.  maybe you can go to the bronx and make fun of kids' sat scores too

nah i'm just done with this.  also it's a lot of posts to make.  we've gotten really far off the initial argument and ehhh you know it stops being even a little bit entertaining after a while.  when i am arguing with you about why my high school was too broke to throw in a bunch of worthless electives, it's . . . it's time to call it.
