okay lets just settle this it behooves EVERYONE to have better conditions for chickens. here's why.

-the closer chickens are, the more likely they develop diseases that you will catch. you guys might have forgotten this but we've had meat scares so many times. this is almost always a result of factory farming chickens and not just because they are CHICKENS. this alone should be reason enough to spend a bit on barbed wire cages. people should not die because chickens are crammed together.

-chickens that have more space taste better. i'm always surprised by meat eaters that are against better stuff for animals. it's kind they think mcdonalds is GOOD or some shit and meat doesn't substantially improve. like this helps YOU EAT BETTER MEAT, why'd you be against it? i will admit i do not know this for chickens, although most farm fresh movement people will attest to it, but it is a fact that happy cows yield much better meat with better marbling, last longer, TASTE phenomenal.

-I'm kind of surprised so many people don't have at least a small ethical yen to kill animals humanely. I know it seems prima facie hypocritical and probably is but at the same time let's not pretend most of us wouldn't feel at least a bit queasy seeing a chicken be literally splattered by hammer and turned into a nugget vs killed by a stun gun. it is hypocrisy intrinsically and like a doctor killing a death row inmate (thus why that's a huge issue) but I am really surprised no one has stepped in to say okay come on guys be realistic here we may be killing them but i think we all kind of want ETHICAL DEATH.

and i'm sorry dok but you're going to get nowhere with the pain argument. not with GW but with anyone. peta gets nowhere with it and they show videos of cows screaming and shit while they get skinned alive.

the problem is pain is such an esoteric concept when applied to an animal. we like to believe our dogs feel sorrow and our cats mourn but dogs and cats will also eat dead owners. and some won't. does this mean the dog developed ethics? or just patterns of behavior? this is a question we can't answer yet and you might think the person saying I DONT CARE ABOUT A CHICKEN'S FEELINGS hasn't thought this out but they have on some level. I do not think ANYONE cares about the pain of a crawfish and we boil them alive (lobster pain though was actually the subject of a brilliant DFW essay called Consider the Lobster I think everyone should read just because I have a huge boner for him) and people are going to stretch this to almost every animal they regularly eat in their heads.

honestly if the animal rights movement wishes to succeed it needs to abandon the anthropomorphization of animals and focus on the fact that as human beings it first off behooves us even on a culinary level to treat animals better and then slowly point out that factory farming is like all corporate behavior tends to become; intrinsically disgusting. smithfield farms came up in another topic; men have drowned in pig shit because of smithfield having no regulations. DROWNED IN PIG SHIT MEN PLURAL.

but throw away PAIN FOR A CHICKEN because i gotta tell you chickens are absolute dumbasses in the animal kingdom.

Chickens are pretty smart animals, though. Don't have a source on that, but I've heard it from a lot of people. Maybe it's just a rumour.

But yeah, this whole chicken in the cages thing is right. They should be in bigger cages. When you keep them all together (besides what Steel mentioned) they also fight. So on the way to the slaughterhouse, they're getting scratched up and their eyes pecked out, and a number of horrible things even before they're going to get killed. That in itself is torture. Not to mention the loss of profit from already dead chickens and the possibility of disease and infection.

yeah that was actually what i meant by the close conditions which is where the disease comes from, more than eating their own shit etc. if the chickens fight they infect each other. once again you don't need to actually give a flying fuck about animal ethics to really want better conditions for all animals we eat. buuut no dulcinea I don't think you'll score points with TORTURE either because once again:

and this is pretty much the end for most people in regards to animal pain and it's honestly not that far off from truth almost ALL THE TIME. also let's not forget the fact that you can ethically and easily survive without killing an animal ever should make you feel at least a little bad when you think about it.

what I think you motherfuckers are missing most importantly is the concept of pain. I don't want animals tortured because its unnecessary and barbaric. Its gross I don't want the food I'm eating to be tortured or stuffed in tiny boxes until it dies? Morally I don't want it on my conscious I can live with eating meat because I like and need to eat it to live but all that other stupid shit is unnecessary and we're more than capable of doing better.

Basically with all that smithfield, korean dog torturers, and chicken coop sizes all I see is some buisness owners just blatantly saying: we don't give a fuck about anyone or anything but money

Edit: Dok that shit doesn't matter. I know for a fact that chickens are unbelievably stupid and still I don't want them to get tortured because its barbaric and disgusting

the thing is though that people don't care what happened to the animal as long as it comes packaged nicely and looks normal. you might personally care about chickens being tortured and shit but there's still a lot of people who say "WHO CARES IT'LL DIE ANYWAY" and the way we treat various other animals (such as lobsters) doesn't make the argument any stronger.

once again though the problem with this example is it breaks down instantly in people's head as pulling the legs off a fly is wanton cruelty (isnt that like SHAKESPEARE I just quoted? it sounds familiar. lear has a line about like flies to the gods are we something about wanton) where as with food they will say it's going to die anyways who cares.

i too am surprised COXSWAIN was one of the few people to bring this up but i'm not surprised the majority opinion in the thread and probably irl is "who cares anyways" because it's a pretty solid opinion.

Nope, not at all!

It is an animal, I am an omnivore. I was built to eat these things, and while I could probably get on fine without doing so, I think they taste good and are an awesome source of protein that doesn't turn me into a girlyman by filling me full of estrogen like soy does.

Don't think for one second that a large chicken wouldn't eat us eat like a normal chicken eats a bug.

True fact: my family always bought our eggs/milk/beef/chicken/pork from a local farmer and family friend and I got to put a slug in a cows dome once. Slept like a baby that night.

Don't wanna support torture of chickens? Buy free range chicken products or go straight to the source at small farms all over the country. No brainer right there.

Still, legalizing it means regulations of what they can or cannot put in the meat to increase sales.

A tool is a tool regardless. I mean if you suck, you suck, and not even the most perfect tool could save you. And if your damn good then even with the worst tool ever conceived you could chug out some high quality shit.
