secondly I think it's indicative of a luckily DYING sense of "world music" that was perpetuated for way too long. earlier this month I finally defriended race "scholar" (he can say the stupidest fucking things) Tim Wise on Facebook not because he was just...being...so dumb but because he posted a video saying HOW SOUL AFFIRMING. I saw several black children in the video and it was clearly them singing. knowing Wise's interests I expected either some kind of urban school in the brink of decay but they're still singing some feel good blah blah stuff.

it was kids singing Viva la Vida. all the comments were HOW SOUL AFFIRMING and shit like that it was fucking Coldplay.

I do not like these kinds of things. when people supposedly unite under a banner, and then proceed to cover or make a song that has absolutely nothing to do with them. am I supposed to genuinely believe children singing Coldplay is a video I care about? this organization (which no thanks to GR I had to look up on my own) is raising money for a music school in foreign lands.

they chose to promote it by having a bunch of people sing a cover of an English song. awesome. good job guys. American Idol sings to the fucking troops huh. why not have a song from the region you are you know TRYING TO HELP? because youtube won't watch THAT cover. they won't get it. no it's better that despite every single aspect of this supposedly being multicultural we sing a banal fucking cover. hmm let's gamble. how about IMAGINE? that's a creative choice for our next shill. raising money for a music school in another country that will have nothing to do to do with easy listening should not be done by musicians across the world singing and playing Stand By Me. it's dumb and it perpetuates a myth that not only are these kinds of songs representative of the world of international music (NEW: GOOGOOSH COVERING LADY GAGA) but that ethnic music can't stand on its own.

luckily as our own pal DS will back me up on this shit has been falling out of favor ever since Graceland (which whatever else it may have done punctured the cultural boycott directly, although bands like the Talking Heads or artists like Jeff Buckley have weaved musical styles into western music much better) and whatever you think of VAMP WEEKEND and shit you can't deny that more than ever African music in particular is getting press on its OWN merit. despite that Amadou and Mariam album being probably their worst to date, I heard Sabali on the radio yesterday. Toumani Diabatte's album topped lists in 08. Fela Kuti is less of a name drop and more of a "you DON'T know who that is?" (admittedly this is for much worse reasons and probably not because of the spread of real multiculturalism).

this video would have been something I'd care about if it was a genuine exercise in artists across the world attempting to show the real power of ethnic traditions in music instead of just shoving some black chicks going OOOOOO and acting like you've made a great stand for a school somewhere. it doesn't help that I can think of exactly ZERO of these ever working to any great success, even Live 8 tends to be found out as wasting more money than it raises usually.

there used to be a winamp one that wasn't last.fm that did this. i know because i was watching some anime and it showed up and i was like oh fuck.

it might have been back with AUDIOSCROBBLER or whatever but i noticed one time i opened a porn vid and it showed up on my thing. also ive seen it on other peoples and it was pretty funny
