Django makes everyone feel inadequate.
*has a busted ass hand with two fingers fused together and solos like a guy who has 3 hands*

I used to listen to a lot of those Jobim/GIlberto/Stan Getz bossa nova songs.  They have some very minimalistic, yet beautiful rhythms and melodies going on.  I especially like Getz on the sax.  The song would be pretty peaceful/beachy and then Getz wails out this really sexy melody.  The girl that sang with them has an amazing voice as well.

Here are some of my all-time favorites.

Chega de Saudade:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-8UjONoaI4

Corcovado:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMX6E68qJAg

Aguas de Marco:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rk8JffDaUOY

Desafinado:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n81JA6xSbcs

And of course, most everyone knows The Girl from Ipanema.

Guys, right now I'm listening to Billy Cobham - Magic - Simplicity of Expression, Depth of Thought. So far, the album is AMAZING. For anyone interested in jazz drumming this album is insanely good. He even uses shuffle double bass drumming a few times which is always fun to hear.

we've got, in basic historical order:

NEW ORLEANS

the original jazz. they used tubas in the bass section (not ever used again a great amount). almost 100% of the songs are blues.

SWING

swing is the loose jazz equivalent of today's radio hip hop. there are some damn good ones, of course. it just depends on if you like the style.

BE-BOP

jazz began to get on heroin during the late 40's. it began from swing musicians just jamming all night. the most notable player was Charlie Parker. it's fast tempo, and the improv is all over the place.

COOL JAZZ

it's laid back, chamber jazz. a reaction to be-bop.

MODAL

most songs were using only 2 or 3 chords. this is commonly where you will see jazz stereotypes.

AVANT GARDE (FREE JAZZ)

there were no pre-written chords. have fun.

FUSION

just like it says. it uses rock, jazz, funk, latin, etc. the first pioneers weren't exactly accepted mainstream, but whatever.

ACID JAZZ

dj's cuttin up jazz samples and throwing in some things. honestly, they don't always use jazz samples. as far as improv, well i suppose the arrangement is always different and there's scratching or cutting involved. a good place to start is dj shadow.

Django only had one finger, its as big as four cats, and hes got a retractable leg so he can leap up at you better and you know what?He lights up at night, and hes got four ears. Two of them are for listening and the other two are kind of back-up ears, and his claws are as big as cups and for some reason hes got a tremendous fear of stamps and Mrs Doyle was tellin me that hes got magnets on his tail so if youre made out of metal he can attach himself to you,and instead of a mouth its got four arses

lol miles' autobiography is hilarious and has lots of cool stories like that. he joined a band when he was younger and this dancer wanted to fuck him so she said "hey why dont you hold this mirror under my cooch so i can see while I trim." and when he told the older band mates about they asked if he had sex with her "no... i uh just held it for her"

plus he wanted to do an album with jimi hendrix im so sad this never happened :(

That's a great story hahahaha. I might pick up his autobiography. He seems like a pretty interesting cat.

Can anyone suggest albums/songs that sound like Puffnstuff by Billy Cobham?

Also, could anyone recommend jazz where you CLEARLY hear the drums at a higher level than most jazz. I've been trying to play along with jazz but to get the drums to a decent volume I need to have the sax at a terribly high volume so that's not working for me. I really wanted to play along to Kind of Blue -_-

Kind of Blue has the drums mixed up pretty high really compared to most 50s and earlier jazz, you probably can't get much better than that. Try boosting the right channel by the way, drums and especially the ride sound to be heavily on the right, while piano and the other sax (don't know who's who) are on the left. That way you can hear the drums at least every other solo.

Basically, try some modern records. Like nostalgia albums, old school style jazz in the 21st century. The idea sounds pretty horrible otherwise, but if you're only after some jazz drumming to play along that could work. Did a quick search in Spotify and got some decent results for example with Buddy Rich. Spotify has a ridiculous collection of Gene Krupa by the way.

Fusion's another thing then, but I suppose that's not what you're looking for.

Rhapsody in blue, is a win, obviously.

Some artists:
- The Cinematic Orchestra, Seems very bigbang / Cinema inspired.
- Jaga Jazzist, the kind of stuff you would hear in a Jazz bar.
- The Quantic Soul Orchestra, Sounds bigbang-ish / Cinema oriented
- Bonobo, Electronica Dj, But gets his style from 30ies jazz and sounds of the french

And, If your a Chrono trigger / Yasunori Mitsuda fan, I will suggest Brink of time, a Chrono trigger cover album in jazz style.
so you've come here for pointless ego boosting and happy sunshine glee? this aint deviantart man.

From Cinematic, try Everyday first. Definitely better than Motion and based on reviews I've read, also better than Movie Camera/Ma Fleur.
