hmm i'm trying to remember if it was one of the resident evil games but... well i just remember this scary game that my brothers used to play where you chose one of 3 crystals at the beginning of the game and it affected everything later. it had some crazy stuff in it, like the walls would bleed when you were freaked out and i remember there being magic spells of some sort...

Thats so weird, I was gonna post this too. I actually found the sequel more scary though. The one in space. Even though its like 8 bit graphics, when the axe murder is chasing you around, my blood was boiling

The X days a X (and Trilby's Notes) are pretty good games, though I'd call them semi-horror.

You might want to keep the "catchy part" of the game(s) hidden though Lyndon, not to spoil anything to somebody who'd like to play them.

I always found old school Doom to be creepy. The surreal level design, surprisingly effective lighting, great enemy designs, and overall surprise factor (grabbing a key and having a hundred imps spawn around you) made up for the obvious lack of "realistic" graphics.

Usually because the game sucked me in so much that I wouldn't notice people talking to me/entering my room, and my dad made me practically crap myself by tapping me on the shoulder without me knowing he was there

Fallout 3 can classify, depending on where you're at in the game world. Give it a spin.

Haha I had the same experience several times, I'm a bit more used to the monsters now but I still get a good fright every so often. I can't really play it at night.

A tool is a tool regardless. I mean if you suck, you suck, and not even the most perfect tool could save you. And if your damn good then even with the worst tool ever conceived you could chug out some high quality shit.

In agreement with Bojangles, Obscure is a decent alternative. I recently (well, a month ago) bought and completed Obscure II and while it's not "mind fuck" scary, it certainly hearkens back somewhat to the first Resident Evil as far as scares go... just not as many puzzles and a very B-Movie-ish college kids storyline. Ever seen The Faculty? That's the kind of dialogue you can expect from this game, but the monster designs are friggin great. You can make out distinct human features that will freak (if not gross you out) when you realize how the body could have mutated to take on that form. You'll see what I mean as you unlock the game's artwork through play. (and have your first sighting of the crab walking female monster) You can probably get either one for PS2 or Wii for about $15-$20 now.

Yeah this part is in Episode One and it's by far the best part of the game, the lighting and tension are really great. Iirc it's at about the middle of the entire game so I'm afraid you will have to endure the boring ass urban gauntlet known as Episode One before you'll get there.

imo i liked ravenholm from hl2 moreso than episode 1's pitchblack scene. mustve been the sound I guess, and the fact that it was a new experience to have the "something scary" aspect in a halflife game.

Killing Floor. It's like a 6 player survival version of Left 4 Dead, except generally a lot tougher and imo a lot more fun. Played it for about 5 hours last night on normal with 4 people and didn't manage to win a single map.

pretty much this, if you want a scary game then look no further. some genuine "shit-your-pants" moments and a generally tense atmosphere.

Zombie Master simply because the guy who controls the hordes of undead is a player him/herself, graphics arn't that great but thats a fairly minor issue.

Theresia: Dear Emile is a DS horror game which has flown under the radar. Despite having RE/SH-style illogical puzzles and a hint of anime, it's actually rather good. Another DS horror game worth checking out is Dementium: The Ward.

since this is the only one i haven't seen one here i would recommend. killer 7. nothing like walking along a quite hall to hear the meniacle laughter of a heavens smile and then having to find where it came from and shoot its weak spot before it gets to you. that and fear is still a good horror title.

I got Killing Floor, it's fun but most games I'm in, we lose at Wave 5, when Flesh Pounders or w/e first start spawning. Am I missing something or are they just ridiculously tough compared to every other monster? Like, wave 1-4 are generally cakewalks as long as everyone sticks together and then half the team gets wiped out by one pounder. They are definitely beatable if EVERYONE just focuses on one when it's alone but there are like 3 or 4 of them at once in wave 7 and I always get rocked.
