Title: SW-JAM 2013 Welcome Page
Post by: Carrion Crow on September 08, 2013, 05:45:47 pm

Hello Developer!

You've stumbled upon this topic, so I'll assume you're here for the game jam although some brilliant artists and game development personalities post here too. Here's the meat of what you need to know:

The Details
And finally, submit your game to itch.io's specially constructed SW-JAM portal found here:

(https://legacy.gamingw.net/etc/itch.io/static/images/itchio-black-30.png) (http://itch.io/jam/saltw)

Big thanks to Leafo for sorting submissions out for us. itch.io is a great way of monetizing any games you have made, however; we make the requirement that your submissions are free for the duration of SW-JAM such that people can actually play them!

The winning submission will be decided by forum vote when people have had long enough to play enough games to vote fairly.

The winner or winning team will receive a 3D-printed Foget skull trophy (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8291707/foget_trophy.png) and of course; the pride of winning!

Foget ( :fogetsmile:) was long the mascot of Gaming World, a website which eventually disappeared into the Matrix, leaving behind the salty residue of a website you're currently perusing (Reason for site name: 404 file not found).

If you're new to SW and you're a creative type then you should stick around. The team who developed Barkley and are developing Barkley 2 rose from their humble RPG Maker beginnings here in years past and we are host to some other wonderful lurking oddities. We figured we would attempt a community revival through the art of game-jam so we hope you approve!

Spread the Word!

We'd be grateful if you'd let your friends and followers in on the deal so feel free to direct them to our splash page or this thread in the run-up to the competition.

Thanks!  :fogetbackflippe:

Fuck it, going to try.

If anything I'll be using Construct 2 since I have the full version of that.

EDIT: also I am the only one that'll be a part of the development of my game.

I'd like to do music for whoever. I can also do some sprite art if need be. If no one wants to team up I guess I will get the chance to show off my mediocre RPG Maker skills.

I may request help from you for music then if no one else does. Afraid to commit to 'yes, I need your help'. IDK if the reasons for that are obvious but they have to do with me.

Welcome to the new members so far - thanks for chipping in!

Can I just say, if you're new to this forum and you're not sold on joining SW just yet - go and check out denzquix's thread on iconic game archaeology (http://saltworld.net/forums/topic/12677-iconic-game-archaeology-miscellaneous-artifact-pile-image-heavy/). Nice to meecha.

Okay now everyone start chanting ONE OF US  :fogetbatshit:

My game (which will be exempt from voting as I am organizing this compo, but it's the taking part that counts... right... guys?) will be made in Unity and Blender.

I'm actually called Ed and I am from Liverpool but currently stuck in purgatory.

I will be working with perhaps one or two other sentient lifeforms. If I'm lucky that is. :fogetshifty:

Really like how this is set up, and all the excitement for it. The last two LD's I was in I didn't pull through in time, and the last two SW jams I had the time, but they lacked the overall participation.

My name's Andrew

Working by Myself (Totally open to anyone wanting to join in with an unknown. I can do art and coding, but am open to anyone with any sort of talent.)

Since I got a week leading up to it, it would be a great chance to teach myself Moonscript. Failing that, I would probably just go with AS3 (it would be AS2, but funnily enough I was too lazy to even use it at all back in the day. By the time I was ready to actually use it for something, AS3 was already out)

I was wandering through the most recent Ludum Dare blog posts, and I happened to bump into this one (http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/2013/09/09/join-the-saltworld-net-game-jam/).

This jam's coming at a good time for me - I'm taking part in OneGameAMonth (http://onegameamonth.com), almost entirely through game jams, but there don't seem to be too many other game jams on this month (apart from some whole-month-long ones that don't interest me as much).

So yeah. I'm in!

Location: The north of England.
Team: Just me.
Tools: For game jams, I normally use Unity3D for 3D stuff or Love2D for 2D stuff. But I've been meaning to play around with some new tools, so I may well end up using something else for this jam, like SFML or Ogre3D or something.

By the way, do we have an IRC channel for this jam?

You have your voters to answer to. It's a loosely moderated competition in the respect that the rules are lax but if you do something so overtly pre-prepared then you may get less votes proportional to the degree you violate the spirit of the game jam.

I am MaD/ren/@zach_no_beard, long time member/lurker of gamingw and saltw
I am going it alone
I will probably go straight HTML5 with either an engine from scratch or impactJS(http://impactjs.com/ (http://impactjs.com/)).  If not that then probably something with love2d/moonscript (one of my favorite programming stacks)

I am off to a good start with names: http://apps.baltimoresun.com/Preakness/index.html?q=5&a=Captalism&m=10 (http://apps.baltimoresun.com/Preakness/index.html?q=5&a=Captalism&m=10)

SKELETON PREDICTIONS

If you would like to estimate the number of skeletons to be found in ALL entries at the final submission, please PM me with your guess. Skeletons will be tallied after all qualifying games are released. All graphic and text skeletons count towards the final tally, but do not count double in case of overlap. This does NOT include secret or "easter egg" skeletons. All guesses must be received before the end of the jam.

Ok mission is set at making a game containing a procedurally generated number of skeletons in order to specifically screw with any and all participants in the "skeleton predictions" mini-game.

EDIT: "Diggin after Dark" is the tentative horse-title.

So I scrapped my idea of making vector graphics since I still suck at Illustrator so I went pixelart.
Anyway, first screen, working on the other sprites now.

Also I decided to go all custom with this one so here's a sucky theme I just kinda randomly created using SunVox:
https://soundcloud.com/anthony-prince-merluza/a-ghost-by-choice (https://soundcloud.com/anthony-prince-merluza/a-ghost-by-choice)

BTW, does anyone know of a good free wav-to-mp3 converter? I converterted it using online-convert.com but it takes a long time.

EDIT: Anyone knows of any halloweenish music? preferably on midi format so i could copy the melody and do my rendiiton of it.

I decided to dump the graphical theme of my game, with 2 days in, this is quite the disadvantage, but I underestimated the production of pixel art graphics. It'd take me me very long to finish all planned animations so I should change it now.

Anway here are the characters I've made so far that I won't use anymore:

Yes, the name is from the horsename list as well.

yeah i'm terrible at making gui in my game. i'll still develop it of course, but if anyone at all could help me out figuring out how to position it correctly, that would be great. if no one does, and i can't figure it out, it might only be playable on a 1600x900 resolution, and that would be dumb.

The only progress I made today was mapping out every room of the game on the back of an index card.  High class stuff going on here.

exactly. i've tried most things i can think of, but nothing seems to work. the code i have looks something like

GUI.DrawTexture(Rect(Screen.width/2.65,Screen.height / 2,446,202), tex);

but is giving me errors at other resolutions.

Had contract work+cleaning to do today. So not much progress. Made a track loop for HEART STEALER and started on player collision.

Is there a way for you to preset like some padding? I wouldn't really know. Unity is way over my head.

that's what i tried to do with the code snippet i pasted a few pages back. still unsure why that didn't work, it should be dividing fine.

Here is where I am at now.  Initially I was a bit concerned about the graphical requirements of a beat'em up but now I am feeling a bit better.  I had fun tonight just laying out the basic pieces of a usable tileset.  I'll add more detail to it later.  I'm thinking the grass might be too bright of a green.  Kind of looks like Simpsons...

Team Jamie/Earl/Puppet Master has decided to mix horse names to form Downtown Ghost: Floating Alone on Zebulon Road. Mostly we have like 4 and a half music tracks done and some foundational gameplay ideas as well as thematic and aesthetic concept stuff done. I missed out on an IRC chat so they probably have more information than I do.

It's been awhile since I've messed with Unity.  I never liked UnityGUI and I actually at some point started using NGUI: http://www.tasharen.com/?page_id=140 (http://www.tasharen.com/?page_id=140) (you can get the source somewhere and get around the watermark I'm pretty sure, as long as you don't use it commercially).

Have you tried GUI.BeginGroup(Rect(whatever location and size you want)).  This will make any following controls be positioned relative to the rectangle you specify in BeginGroup.  So if you gave it a box at (100, 90) and then place a button at (0, 0), it would set it to (100, 90).

There are also some nifty methods in the GUILayout helper that might be helpful.  Here is an overview on UnityGUI layout stuff: http://docs.unity3d.com/Documentation/Components/gui-Layout.html (http://docs.unity3d.com/Documentation/Components/gui-Layout.html)

so someone on the unity forums figured out my problem. the size of the guitexture wasn't relative. the only problem is me attempting to figure out how to make it so haha.
for anyone who's interested, here's some code.

Quote
public var originalWidth : float;  // define here the original resolution
public var originalHeight : float; // you used to create the GUI contents
private var scale: Vector3;
public var tex : Texture;
public var s : GUISkin;

function OnGUI(){
    scale.x = Screen.width/originalWidth; // calculate hor scale
    scale.y = Screen.height/originalHeight; // calculate vert scale
    scale.z = 1;
    var svMat = GUI.matrix; // save current matrix
    // substitute matrix - only scale is altered from standard
    GUI.matrix = Matrix4x4.TRS(Vector3.zero, Quaternion.identity, scale);
    // draw your GUI controls here:

    //GUI.Box(Rect(10,10,200,50), "Box");
    //GUI.Button(Rect(400,180,230,50), "Button");
    GUI.DrawTexture(Rect(Screen.width/2.65,Screen.height / 2,446,202), tex);
    GUI.contentColor = Color.black;
    GUI.skin = s;
    GUI.Label(Rect(Screen.width/2.5,Screen.height / 37*20,446,202),"text!");

    //...
    // restore matrix before returning
    GUI.matrix = svMat; // restore matrix
}
i got the main base off of the wiki, and altered it to suit my guis.
good news is is that i modelled two NPCS today so thats cool i guess.

cool stuff in last two pages!
also bwiz in player settings you can set a standard resolution and then turn off the "change resolution" dialogue and design everything for that... i don't think unity has rescaleable fonts which can get messy across res changes so it can be easier to just set a resolution from the start rather than work out conditions for this stuff. if anyone wants to fullscreen they can push alt+enter and you can see what it looks like by changing the in-game editor cam thing aspect to "standalone".

tech talk! i haven't really been working last two days but have been thinking up ideas and now i'm starting.

ugly gui mockup

guy is supposed to be giving a peace sign but depicting a hand with 5x5 pixels is hard. Also halo or afro you decide

also the background is animated and looks like the 90's. Unfortunately prerendered not made in rpgmaker, I thought of a way to do it with EPICSCRIPT or whatever but I thought it was easier/more aesthetic this way

also music idea I sampled a metal band called GOATWHORE

Damn these games are looking just too cool, the more I see the more I think about how hard it is to even keep up!

Mid-jam progress report: The whole "never working on games unless a jam is going on" thing is really starting to hurt me now. Already halfway through, and only now do I feel like I can really start working on the game since I only just now finally honed in on why my collision handling was turning out all wonky.

But I do have a decent generator function that makes nifty randomized plots of dirt, and after much personal anguish, our intrepid protagonist finally makes it on the scene:
(https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1233610/jams/canyoudigit.png)

But will our stoic hero ever get to master the arcane art of shovelmancy in order to realize his job class's full potential? Just what kind of unseen terrors can he expect to be lurking just beneath his feet? Can our hero ever find even the slightest shred of purpose or dignity through simply playing around with a pile of dirt? Find all of this out and even more, at the end of the week! (or possibly sooner if I make cool progress and feel like showing off)

Probably going with the title PUZZLE DREAM. I am making this in java/swing. It has been a while since I have coded anything, so progress is a bit slow sometimes. Trying to figure out how to make this work properly in different screen resolutions. Also still need to write level descriptions and make some scary music.

Current mood: Java sucks, I should learn how to use a game library/unity/gamemaker or something for next time

been doing alot of work.  I won't be able to jam friday, saturday, or sunday, so I'll have to be done and have to hand in my game by friday MORNING.  Been programming and pixelling and sampling for hours and hours straight.  ( , ) (.) my eyes hurt :fogetcrazy:

Wow these are all looking so impressive! I'm really hoping mine can keep up!
This is the first timed competition I've ever done (I started one or two others but never got significantly into the game) and it really looks like you'll all outdo me. Hopefully "Cactus City Road" proves to be fun!
I was also forced to learn AS3 for this (thanks to CC!), so I've been googling like crazy to relearn everything I used to use in AS2. It's working out though! You guys seem like a great community, this is already fun and we haven't even gotten our hands on eachother's games.

I'll post a screenshot tonight after I get a few more hours of work in
What's Done
Art - Passable (I always do things passably at first and then If I have time I come back and make things pretty)
player mechanics - done
enemy mechanics - started
level design - TBD

I think that if you know you're not gonna make the deadline, but you LIKE your idea - keep that fire burning and keep posting to this thread. For those who behave in such a way there may even be a surprise reward!!!!???

Voting will not begin until enough time has passed to allow people to play the games so your official submissions will be downloadable from itch.io but there's nothing stopping you from drop boxing new builds and posting them in this thread. You're growing prize fruit right now but some of you might bake it into a tasty pie.

What I'm seeing pleases me greatly!

I'm going to finish mine in time I think, but I'm going to keep expanding it probably.  ...can I keep the dev posts going?

Also, milestone celebration sidenote - just wrote this game maker code and couldn't be happier:

            room_goto(cineRoom);
            with(all){//woooooooooooooooooooo!
                if object_index != endOfGameStats{
                    instance_destroy();
                }
            }

It's all coming to an end, folks.

Yeah no, I am almost certain there will be builds of my game outside of the game I submit. The trick is figuring out which order to put doing things so that the most essential game-centric stuff is getting done first. Right now I am hoping that I can get a fully functional rudimentary engine complete on friday so that I can spend the whole day Saturday setting up sound effects and putting on polish.

I already got a good idea of what kind of game I want this to be when made in a week, but I could spend a week just thinking about what kind of game I could turn it into while allowing myself any deadline I wish.

I'm probably not going to finish this in two days seeing as I need to catch up on some contracted work. I like my idea tho so imma work on it here and there.

Got some basic AI working.  Currently it's hard because the enemies can attack just as fast as the player can and have the same range, have to figure out how to handle trades or make the thugs slower.  I know adding combos and pushback would help here which may be the next thing after a health bar.

I've yet to clear all the thugs myself.

Hey thanks denzquiz!  man I can't believe that second glitch still exists...  oh well i guess that is what I get for programming well past the 24th hour of conciousness gets me.  coulda probably used a good 3 hour testing session.  We will see if I can get to fixing those before the deadline occurs, but I think I'm going away for the weekend.  i'll get a laptop someday...

Much like Velfire, I may have to drop out. I planned on getting my game done over the weekend because I thought a certain family trip was canceled. It is not canceled any more and I'm definitely going. Its mostly up in the air but I'm leaning towards not possible to finish. Urgh, I should have put more effort on weekdays I mostly came home from work and vegged.

I might say fuck it and finish the game late anyway though. Probably gunna do that in fact.

so i don't know if i'm out or not. i was totally stumped on the creepy halloween theme and was prepared to admit defeat when i inexplicably picked up an older project of mine and begun creating it in twine after i stumbled onto some neat macros (http://l.j-factor.com/twine/) that let me do all the things that were keeping me from making it in twine to begin with. i thought about just releasing a demo of this project for this jam, as it's a rather large game and it will take me a really long time to actually finish it completely. feels like this is totally against the spirit of the jam, to just pick up an older project i spent a ton of time on years ago, squeezing a demo out that i didn't spend a ton of time on. will probably hold off on releasing versions of this until i actually have time to finish it.

totally rocking game though, i got totally obsessed with it back in the day and it basically ruined my life and many of my friendships for a long time. cool that the game jam kinda prompted me to go back and survey the damage, actually find a way to make it, hopefully next time without loss of life. A+++ WOULD BRING THE DEMONS BACK INTO MY LIFE AGAIN

I've been working on AI, some UI and other elements.  Got a life bar, a combo counter (although you can only throw three consecutive punches and that's it).  Added a a temporary speed boost you can use which was part of the original design, but I need to give him a new animation for it since just limping faster isn't very exciting.  As usual, you can play the latest build here: http://saltw-jam1.herokuapp.com/ (http://saltw-jam1.herokuapp.com/)

Oh man, I dunno if I'm gonna be able to finish in time, less than 24 hours and I still have like 6 illustrations to do and 12 blurbs to write, and then I still gotta feed all this into AGS or twine

but even if I don't finish in time for the jam deadline, I'll still finish this eventually anyways, or at least show all the stuff I did.  I never really seriously tried to draw for a project before, it's been a lot of fun and even though I don't think I'm great at it, I think some of the things I did look kind of cool

I might expand on the idea of the game later because I like it, would have liked to make more levelz. I had the basic idea (graph isomorphism...) a while back when I was studying something and thanks to saltw jam I finally got around to actually doing something with it.

hopefully there are not too many game breaking bugs in this thing! it's made with java, so it should work with both windows and linux (special thanks for a buddy trying it out with linux). Dunno about mac.

probably a first-time jammers mistake to procrastinate to the last weekend. it's my first one too. I'm gonna suggest submitting anything even part finished, if it's playable at all! there's definitely something appealing about an unfinished jam game if it hints at any sort of thought process

I hope people submit whatever they managed to create, however much they're incomplete. I spend so much time on the cutting room floor wiki looking at fragments of games which were never meant to be seen anyway, so I'm Officially Calling everyone to submit whatever they have managed to create for the deadline. At least then a few of us can be recognised as glorious jamming failures, rather than a gluttony of promises

I already said before, but will say again - submit what you have, continue to develop and we will all judge on a combination of what you had at midnight tonight and what you ended up with later due to your inspiration. This is an easy compo, so just chill and show us what you got. We're all developers here and can appreciate where you were going so if you can show us more later on that's fine.

I'll probably update this post shortly with the prototype I got together after roughly a week's effort, and make a proper topic for further progress since I really am pretty excited about fleshing out this game concept. btw there was a lot more I wanted to do with Treat Fighter, namely

Throwing (you play as frankenstein, he should be able to pick people up over his head and then set them down (over the edge of a tower))
Music.. I lost a good 4-5 hours total on this before I decided to give up on it.  The game is survival/arcade based right now anyway so any one theme would probably get annoying.
Weapons, would be nice to be able to do more than punch and kick
Make the stage look better/more stages, I kind of threw together what is there now in the first few days of the compo and never got back to it.  I actually wanted a little Troubadours music shop in the background.
Boss fight, this was at the end of my stretch items list since i'm not sure when it should occur

and probably more I just didn't think of just now.

Well here's our submission (finished by inri @ midnight Brazilian time, so maybe we'll let it slide).

It's not done but the framework for an adventure is there and we're pretty proud of it. We are gonna continue making it. I did want to make an intro movie but I was visiting relatives this weekend and that would have been a bit rude.

Programming/UI: Inri Cheetos/Mince Wobley
Art/Anims: ed
Music: Natty/ATARI

I agree we need a place to submit!
I was going to ask.
How does this whole thing work? I posted with a link to my game but do people vote for their favorites orrrr?
And when will be find out winners!?

So far I'm enjoying trying them all out!

If you can then submit your game to itch.io.

Voting will not happen for several weeks to allow people to play the games.

Yeah I submitted just last night! I was just wondering about the voting and the playing.
Is there anywhere to go to play what was submitted or is it just what people post here?

MaD I played Treat Fight. Quite fun. I know it's a hasty project so you didn't have time to balance the game (after playing my submitted version I realized it's far far far too difficult) but it does seem that the kick is far better than the punch. I also think the high score table isn't working. Just in case you want to polish the game!

I know I will!
Best of luck for all

Yeah, sorry for not posting my non-game demo sooner, but you can still enjoy playing around with it if you enjoy aimlessly wandering randomized maps with no clear goal ever in sight:

press down to dig, space to jump.
Just do yourself a favor and don't dig while standing on the very edge (It's a game-breaking bug I have yet to iron out)

Nah there isn't, but there definitely should be huh?  When I get a chance to update, i'll definitely include both of these improvements. Dunno why I didn't think of utilizing the down key to dig :fogetnuh:  Thanks a ton for playing!

Thanks for the feedback.  The kicks do more damage but you get a higher score if you combo punches into kicks, that was the idea anyway.  I may add more recovery to the kicks so they are riskier.

There's a couple of small fixes I wanna make, I take that's okay to do now, despite the timeline being over with?

Also, for entries to submit, how do we get our games to show up on http://itch.io/jam/saltw (http://itch.io/jam/saltw) ?  I think that would be a great gathering place for entries, but only a few are showing on that page.  Do they require a specific tag?

AGH I wrote up a big post and accidentally hit a back button shortcut and lost all of it. Have to rewrite it...

I played the games on the official page.

Cactus Road: Most "jump out of your seat" scary game of the bunch. Also the hardest. Was not able to beat it. Only got 4 of the 6 tanks. The way collisions in the game work frustrated me a bit but the game definitely spooked me.

Treat Fighter: Not my kind of game. I got a high score of 47500. And got it once I figured out running circles around the enemies and then hit and run style kicking was the most effective strategy. Good art work and sounds though.

Pumpkin Moonshine: Had the best gameplay of all of the games. I beat the game and got 27.47% score. Felt fairly challenging with out being frustrating. Great music and charming art.

The Witch King of Decadensia: Most creepily atmospheric game. I ended up being a dragonfriend. Very well written.

Puzzle Dream: Interesting idea. Reached level 7 and got a bit bored and mildly frustrated though. Text snippets made the game for me.

Kissin Wizard: To bad its unfinished. Very interesting and very crazy. The tiny bit of Gameplay reminded me a bit of Coffee Mafia game that Jmickle made which is a good thing. Artwork is cool.

Eclipse/Random Zombie Game by jamesthejam: I got a score of 152. Not much else to say.

A Ghost By Choice: Wouldn't run. Said DX8VB.dll was missing. I don't trust the dll sites and I'm not going to troubleshoot but I do want to play this game!

4-LUNG BOY: This is super charming and excellent art work and music and entertaining writing. I got stuck though. I need a walkthrough.

EDIT (forgot to talk about this one): Lime Xpress: I'm curious as to were this game was going. I hope you finish it later!

For me its a tie between Pumpkin Moonshine and Decadensia with 4-LUNG-BOY being a close second place to these games. I seriously don't know who to vote for between the 2. I also don't know where to go to vote.

game reviews::

4-Lung Boy: really liked this, music + mix of art styles (photo, pixel, sketches) + idea of an adventure game story where you are kind of peripheral to the "main plot" and where this plot is used to bound + comment on what's going on with you + being able to solve circuitous adventuregame puzzles by just asking people for things. was surprised by how large + comprehensive world was too! 10/10

Random Zombie Game: I liked the goofy folkrock song that played. After a certain point I stopped trying to kill all the zombys and just tried to explore the abstract urban void in which they were contained, including a park with what looked like an ice section but which i guess was water. top score c110. 10/10

Lime Express: fave game feature was the little "ping" noise when you talk to someone changing pitch each time you do it. liked angular 3d hell dimension, crystal train, a couple of walls textured with random images and presented without comment, like a redecorating project that burned out midway thru. 10/10

Kissin' Wizard: "wow... is this the new zelda (nintendo) game??" loved scrolling glowing amiga-style title text also music. kept crashing but i enjoyed sifting thru game files to find hidden messages + levels and also trying to edit the text files to make my own incoherent levels. did it work? NO!!!!!!! 10/10

Pumpkin Moonshine: got 5 pumkin. really cool, atmospheric generated abstract hell caves, i couldn't beat it due to poor muscle coordination. 10/10

A Ghost By Choice: could not find dx8vb.mll. 10/10

Treat Fighter: cool frankenstein... i liked the blatantly fake pantomime horses but wasn't sure how the crown mechanic worked or why they kept thanking me. i liked lurching around and slapping the garishly coloured cartoon punks in the best tradition of videogames. 10/10

Witch King of Decadencia: really cool + atmospheric, good sounds! malevolent ritualistic fairyland was a good fit to CYOA format which is always about nervously pushing thru an ambiguously rational deathtrap dungeon anyway. i got to ending 7 since i didn't want to bug the witchking or be impolite. 10/10

Could not d/l Cactus City from itch.io for some reason!
Title: SW-JAM 2013 Welcome Page
Post by: Neuropath on September 30, 2013, 07:53:38 am
I posted reviews on the threads people made for their games, but I will put shorter reviews here for the rest

A Ghost By Choice: I downloaded the .mll through shady means but even after acquiring it the game tells me direct 8 isn't working or something.  don't know what that's about, I have direct11.  I think I saw a 3d pigman on the twitter of one of the makers of this game though, so I really hope its issues get cleared up some day.  y'all don't know how much I love pigmans

Eclipse/Zombie Game: a profound statement on urban alienation and the futility of violence in the face of prejudice.  killed 72 zombies before a screen told me to hit escape to restart because I died.  hitting escape did nothing.  perhaps a testament to the finality of death and mortality

Lime Express: this game has it all, trains, hell dimensions, friends with tentacles.  very salt in aesthetique and attitude.  love it, and hope to see it expanded upon some day

Cactus City Road: sometimes gas tanks spawned off to the far reaches of the screen that are inaccessible on foot.   momma always told me to never drive farther than half my tank of gas from the last fuel station, she musta known that white ghoasts are jerks and will spook me to death if I run dry on fuel

PUZZLE DREAM: some talking head in game design once said that puzzle games are the hardest to make right.  for that reason I admire your ambition in tackling that kind of a project for a game jam.  my spatial reasoning's pretty terrible though, and I got stuck on around level 9.  I'll probably keep at it, though, because it looks like there's a locked .rar archive called "mystery tome", and gatdamn I loves me those kinds of secrets, so I will definitely keep at it to find out what my mystery prize is

Awards and Commendations:

Most "Salt": tie between Lime Express and Kissin' Wizard

Spookiest in ShowCactus City Road

"Made By TheCatamites" Award : Mystery Channel

Most Polish:   4-Lung Boy

Best Story:  4-Lung Boy

Prettiest Pictures:  4-Lung Boy

Best Gameplay: Pumpkin Moonshine

Most in Spirit of Competition:  Pumpkin Moonshine

Who I think Should Get the Skull Award:  Pumpkin Moonshine

Just to let people know my game is optimised for controller you can restart with a controller and i forgot to add it in for keyboard also there are several levels.
First Level (Town) - kill 250 zombies to progress instant kill for both you and zombies bullet are destroyed when it hits a zombie
Second Level (Desert) - Get 500 health you start at 100 health bullets are destroyed when they hit a zombie zombies are insta kill each hit on you takes 10 helath when you get to 300 health zombies start spawning at 100 zombies a second as opposed to the normal 20 a second
Bonus - Get the coins to increase your damage for the boss level you have 60 seconds in this room
Boss - giant cirlce moving realy fast in random directions you hit 0.5 health per shot + 0.1 from every coin you collect

I didn't intend to go that deep i just wanted to make a twin stick shooter but a good spin on it i think, thanks.

I may consider changing the water texture to make it more watery. thank you for the complient on the music i have never done my own music for a game before so i am glad you like it, also thanks for the 10/10

Question -

Do you think it was better to have multiple levels or have a single level but much bigger?

Should i just abandone this game or continue making it?

Hey thanks to Neuropath and Warped655 for the reviews! I definitely wish I had more time to work on it.

To address the issues you mentioned:

Difficulty: I am well aware it is wayy too hard. That was actually partly due to a glitch I didn't manage to work out before submission time. The game only ever places one gas tank rather than all of them. That's why you only need 6 rather than the planned 12. Even only going for 6 tanks proved too hard though.
      I am currently working on another project for the Copenhagen ChainJam but I plan on addressing these issues next week. The ghost is also far too difficult to evade. If he spawns on the side you need to go to escape you're just super boned. Nothing you can do.

Gas Tank Spawning: It is completely random right now rather than having smart spawning. This was another time constraint issue. Also on the agenda to be fixed.

Collisions: This game was the first time I ever used AS3 and so couldn't use my goto method of collision detection. I'm not exactly sure how yet, but it will also be changed. I am aware that it screws you pretty often.

Momma's Lesson: As for your momma never letting you run out of gas... well... idk... he's an orphan or something

Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad everyone seems to like the scare it gives you. That's definitely what I focussed on!

I would also much like to do reviews but the games are almost all exclusively for Mac. Tomorrow I will play what I can and write about them.

Ok so I just contacted the engine developer why there is that error of missing dvx8 or something and he suggested I package the game with installer (there is an option) instead of the plain files. And I hate installers so I won't do it. Anyway, you could mark off my game since it's incomplete as shit anyway.

I think it would be truly wonderful of you lot to actually go and play and review some of the games, instead of just posting your own - as is the nature of a jam I guess!

http://saltworld.net/forums/topic/14154-sw-jam-2013-reviewscore-round-up-posted-on-behalf-on-ed/ (http://saltworld.net/forums/topic/14154-sw-jam-2013-reviewscore-round-up-posted-on-behalf-on-ed/)

Play the games and pick your three favourites (make sure to play as many as you can before doing so!) then post in the thread. The deadline is October 13th where there will be a small break and then the winners announced shortly after.

I have played and reviewed them all now except I have held back my opinions as I've been organising this thing. Please please PLEASE hop on over to that thread (the links are all there) and get playing!
