Just to clarify, the book was an effort by his family and his friends from NC State. I didn't know it existed until pretty recently, and all the credit for that effort goes to them!

Hi all,

Amark's family would like to extend their gratitude to all of you guys for offering as much support and condolences that you did during their difficult times. Amark talked about this community a lot. It was clear that you all were an important part of his life, and he held many of you in very high esteem. Not very many people can say they have genuine support and caring from others all around the globe, but you guys have definitely been there for Amark.

A book of his writings has been published, and is available here if anyone wants to buy it. His family is putting the proceeds towards a fund (which is currently being set up, will post details as they come).

Again, thanks to all of you for being such a big part of who he was.

i know it sounds wrong to say this, but i couldn't stop laughing when i was reading his obiturary, why? i have a real close friend called gary, i imaged him doing all those things in the obituary and it just made me laugh! still, it was a good read.

...what?

i have a feeling this is the sort of thing you don't really want to know. nobody is in a good mental shape towards the end. they'd always want you to remember how they were in their prime

this is very true. the reason I quit giving updates for a while there is because the last time I saw him (in the hospital), he was in a very painful state. Although I couldn't be there at the end, I heard from his other good friends that it was peaceful.

Honestly, for me, the happiness I feel because he isn't in pain anymore overshadows the sadness from his passing away. The only real sorrow I feel is for his family, and for the people whose lives he would have changed.

hey sredni or jon do either of you guys know or have some way of finding out if maybe he wrote some kind of farewell message or something? I get the feeling that maybe some time after his stroke but before his condition worsened even more that he might have sensed that he wasn't going to make it and maybe wrote something that was intended to be posted either here or on his blog or something.
I guess there's really no way to find out unless you bug his sister to check his computer and this probably isn't the right time for that so idk. It just seems like something that he would have done and it would be a shame for it not to get posted if it does exist.

he's been delirious for the last month, so unfortunately, no

okay, i'll try and keep this short.

i know i haven't updated in a while, and i'm sorry, but his family didn't want to talk to anyone, and I saw him briefly a few weeks ago, and things were very bad. unfortunately, i bring some rather worse news.

Steel was sent home from the hospital about two weeks ago, and every time I talked to my mom, I asked her how he was doing, and the answer was always "Oh, basically the same." This was for two reasons: a) because things were basically the same as when I'd last seen him and b) because his family wanted to be alone with him, and not be contacted. Last night, I got a call at about 11pm, saying I should probably visit as soon as I can, because the doctors couldn't do anything more for him. Apparently, he'd been in home hospice care the whole time.

Three hours later, I got another call.

Steel passed away last night at about 1:15am.

Please keep his memory and his family in your thoughts and prayers, things are hard for them right now. I'll definitely keep you guys in the loop with any appropriate information. (again, his family does NOT want to be contacted right now, so in case any of you have any contact info... don't use it.)

RIP [Steel] 1986-2009

small update,

my mom told me today that steel's left arm has very painful blisters on it. they think there's some nerve damage that's holding it back. rehab is temporarily paused while they try and fix this.

he's totally bedridden, right now.

goddammit :(

So the first two years of college i fucked around and was generally irresponsible and didn't take engineering very seriously, and as such, even though I've done quite well in the last two years, my GPA is very low, and no company wants to give me an internship (which is important because in the actual job market, relevant experience is WAY more important than GPA, but it's hard to get it without having a good one). I know that I know my stuff, and can perform well in any task given to me, but that one number basically makes my resume not get a second look.

So at the start of this summer, I was desperate to have any kind of engineering experience, and was made aware of a long-running project, started by a very respected and powerful professor in the precision metrology department at my uni. This professor was looking to hire two undergrads for the summer to work on a certain kind of microscope (atomic force microscope if anyone's interested) that usually costs about $40k-90k, that he was trying to have designed and built for under $2000, so that high school classrooms could expose their students to engineering etc. Basically a project drawing worldwide interest, and a very, very good thing to have your name associated with. Well, I sent this professor my resume, but he had pretty much hired two undergrads immediately, and didn't have room to hire one more.

So, I volunteered this entire summer, working the same hours as the paid students (20h/week), working on this microscope and maybe having a good reference for future applications.

Cue mid july, the grad student pulls me aside and says the professor's impressed with my ability, and the progress I've made on the project, and is dipping into funds he had set aside because he (of his own volition) wants to pay me to work on this project through the school year. He apparently also wants me to have a serious conversation with him about grad school, and he would do what he could to pay for my tuition and books, and give me a monthly stipend for myself.

It is pretty fucking radical, and I honestly cannot believe I managed to impress such a powerful guy enough to WANT to put me on payroll and put me in grad school.

On a different note, i upped my parkour training, and finally pulled this off.
