I'm more about the database, filling out all the character/monster/item/skill information and making it all balanced.

I'm planning my next RPG Maker VX project and I was wondering if the game could generate random dungeons each playthrough (like a roguelike) but also include treasure chests with loot selected from a table as well as nonrandom parts of a dungeon for story-related reasons.

Also, I was thinking that instead of having maps for all the towns, going to a town on the world map would open up a menu that would let the player access the inn, shops, and quest points immediately instead of having to wander through town to get there. Does this sound like a good idea from a design standpoint? My main reason for this is because I can never make my town maps look right, so why bother?

Is it possible to use the ^ operator in the RPG Maker VX scripts? Can you give monsters a "level" stat, and have it affect their other stats? Can a character's level be used in battle calculations?

And if I acted like an ass earlier, I'm sorry. I guess I sometimes get too frustrated too easily.

I'm planning on making another project now. Though I have a few questions.

I don't understand why the ability you get at lvl 2 costs so much mana, or why the mana potions restore 3 times your maximum mana pool,
The MP costs are to be proportional to the damage output, which gets really high at later levels. As for the mana potions, they would be a ripoff at the shops if they restored less MP, and your max MP pool increases exponentially.

or as Alec pointed out, why there is a bed (???) in the dungeon? Why did you enter a dungeon just to find a bed and leave?
Barus made it. He was camping out in the cave for his training.

Why are there 3 different pickaxes when you've littered chests everywhere such that the player goes looking for them anyway?
The pickaxes are to get out of the cave.

Why is the player forced to slog through 2 dungeons to get to a tournament that we don't even know why we care about?
It's part of the exposition. Would you rather have me dump the entire story on you at once?

Why is a warrior who's supposed to be in a tournament only equipped with a hat, tunic and sword? Was the idea to go hunt for equipment before the tournament (what?)? If so, why did we skip that part?
He was going to use the money he earned from killing monsters to buy better equipment, yes. And I was originally going to have you pick up his starting equipment yourself in the game.

The story in Torchlight is "almost nonexistant" because no one bothers to read the story in Diablo and Diablo-esque games in the first place, so why should they even bother?

I used the monsters' default attack arrays as a base, modifying the ones at the beginning to try to make them easier, such as by giving them "Wait" commands. Now that I think about it I should have given the player more items to start with and removed the status effects for the monsters at the beginning.

I'll be changing that and fixing a few bugs in Version 1.01, which I'll be providing a link to.

Yes, I finally figured it out.

This is a short RPG Maker VX project I made in just the span of a month. It should be free of major bugs this time. The storyline is related to my novel-in-progress, The Chronos Tome. So, without further ado:

Lironus.exe - 34.39MB

Take it easy, it's only my first ever completed project.

EDIT: Changed some things in the beginning of the game to make it less difficult.

Torchlight isn't very grind-heavy, especially compared to most MMOs. I can gain one or two levels easily by clearing out a single floor. You would know this if you actually played the game.

Of course, EVERY RPG ever made by definition has level grinding.

I found another version of my game on my computer where I actually did fix that error, only to find a couple more problems later on. I know what to do now, though, so I have nothing more to say to you. I'll post another topic when I have the actual game uploaded to the internet and ready to go.

They're not about grinding, they're about finding the best random loot and killing lots of monsters in real-time with your mad skills!

I finally got Hotfile to work, but when I tried to upload my file, my computer suddenly became unresponsive for a while, then the page refreshed. What's going on?

The incompetence of the internet is frustrating me to no end...you know what? I'm going to step back for a while and wait until I'm on speaking terms with my administrator to sort this out.

I'm glad someone else has some sense too.

I should try that eventually. And I'll probably be done with Torchlight if I ever do complete that challenge.

I would like to send my regards to The Penguin for not being a complete and utter fuckwit when I'm trying to carry on a meaningful conversation.

Look, if my game was bad, why would I be going through all this trouble to try to upload it?

The worst part of this topic is where MISTER BIG T insinuates that the quality of another person's RPG might not be that great.

Fixed a typo for you.

When I played through as an Alchemist I specialized in minions and Ember Lance, a spell which was quite effective for both single targets and large swarms. However, keeping track of your pet, two golems, and six imps was a pain, and I struggled to beat the final boss with this kind of setup, dying about a dozen times before he finally went down.

I'd like to play more games like this one. The only one I've played that was similar to this was Alien Syndrome on the Wii and PSP.

When I clicked on the chat button, the screen darkened, but nothing else happened.
