Just figured I would update this to say that there hasn't been anything horrible happening with this machine!

Seems to be working fine and I haven't had much difficulty with getting it to do what I want to, and the hardware seems to be very compatible with Arch.
The keyboard feels really nice to type with too. Best computer I've bought for 100$.

I think the two upgrades I would make if possible are to add a bit more RAM and a solid state drive.

I've been getting into Balatro, it's an easy game to play on breaks or traveling around. Had my first win over the weekend and it felt good!

I love the aesthetic of it's GUI and was thrilled when I discovered ZMZ, the ZSNES GUI made for BSNES.

I haven't heard of ZMZ before, I'll have to check it out.
I loved how customizable ZSNES was, you can tell it was put together by someone who was really passionate about it.

if you had to choose one way to listen to music, which format would you pick? (tape, streaming, cd, MP3, etc.)

i'm thinking about getting into collecting music but cannot decide which media format is worth it.
Streaming is obviously the most convenient one, but I would like to actually own music. And I feel that MP3 is kind of cheating even if they don't have DRM locking them down.

I like that tapes are portable, but I can't remember if the sound quality is poor because it's been so long since I've listened to a tape.
CDs are nice but they are a pain to lug around if you're walking somewhere and from what I remember they tend to skip when listening on a portable player.
vinyl seems fun but not really portable.

maybe I should just get an mp3 player.

i dig the style of it, will have to give it a try eventually.

i've been gaming mostly on my steam deck these days and kind of wish that I bought one sooner because it's a super convenient little device.

yeah unfortunately the game kind of doesn't end but there are unfinished parts as the game goes on, so you don't really know when to stop playing. But basically until you get the ship that can sail over deep water, the game is intact.

It's a little annoying though how some areas have virtually no enemies that drop gold, while others practically all the enemies do, like in the pyramid. Basically any humanoid enemy that you can imagine carrying gold, does, while the more animal-like enemies don't, just give you experience

Here's some screenshots of my MS-DOS (DOSBox) layout that I have on my computer.

I have also found ways to move some of the Steam games I downloaded like Doom and Master of Orion to DOSbox and have them working. It's easier to play them through Steam for the most part, but the purist in me likes loading them up from DOS and playing them like a kid back in the 90s.

Yeah, it's nice to be able to play the old school games on period accurate hardware / in a period accurate environment. Just gives that extra retro touch. Nice setup dude. I think NO$GB and Nesticle were the two emulators that I used the most. On my first two computers (IBM XT and an old Toshiba laptop) they would barely run. Any sort of games that required quick reflexes were pretty much unplayable but I used them to play RPGs.

this is a pretty decent RPG demo, nothing special but nice graphic style and gets the job done while it lasts

suffers a little bit from extra party member bloat near the end, though. I didn't even try out the monk guy

Edit: oh yeah, the sword on the roof is such an oldschool rpg thing to do, literally makes no sense in real life but cool in the context of a game

i dig the style of it, will have to give it a try eventually.

I remember seeing The Adventures of Microman on the AOL Games section. I don't remember if I played it but it does seem familiar.

Getting those big mixes of random shareware games was so much fun.

I also played a lot of QBASIC games because they were small and easy to download on 56k.

New job is going good, should have a new house pretty soon here. And baby #3 is on the way soon too.

And then maybe I'll have some time to work on GamingW / Gamedev some more.

one of my parents passed away today.
if it wasn't for them I probably wouldn't have liked video games.
Earliest memory was watching him torment himself playing Zelda II.
I remember spending weekend evenings when they were off of work playing that game nonstop.
And he would bring a random big box dos game home every now and then when we first had our Packard Bell family PC.

Anyways, he is indirectly responsible for me finding out about this website because he made me interested enough in computers and the internet to learn everything I could about them.

The last game we were able to play together was Fallout 76. It was a horrible shitty mess of a game. But my sibling and my parent had a good time playing through a bit of it. We never got around to finishing it because it became too shitty to tolerate. They also loved Civilization and would often borrow my Switch to play Civ 6 on it.

I guess moral of the story is people dying really sucks.

I'm sorry to here that man. It never gets easy. But while it may be easy to get lost grieving that they're gone, we musn't let that take away from celebrating that they were here.

I am thankful that I was able to move near them and spend the last few months around them. Nice to have a little bit more time.
