for g17

I played the gears don't grind on Sunday. It was clever and short and occasionally frustrating in that feel-good video game way. I won.

Making tiles and daydreaming about power-ups is a nice activity.

We poo-poo contemporary skinner boxes w/ IAPs & their collect-em-all-spend-our-virtual-cash mentality, but we shouldn't overlook the fundamental appeal of the collect-em-all itch.

First, simple signposts of progression are sooooo satisfying.
Second, variety, real or imagined, feels good.

So in Pac-Man, you get cutscreens. In some games, you get a palette swap. Demon Attack is sometimes almost imperceptibly iterative, but you can really feel the progression while you play.

And in Bubble Bobble, we love seeing rare powerups and encountering new level tiles and enemies. It feels good.

This post is called "feels good."

1 re steven universe, which I don't watch, because I only watch 1940-1946 Warner Bros & silent Terrytoons, etc.: everything will be sold to you. I am on twitter because a professor has assigned participating on twitter as a horrible semester-long homework assignment, and twitter is really humiliating, because I'll add someone I think is cool, and they might add me back, and then they'll unfollow me and it's just as terrible as any other rejection. NEway, on twitter you see tons of in-the-pipeline games and if you're of a certain bent, you'll gravitate towards certain aesthetics AND

you start seeing all these images that you associated with the underground, or SW, or 2009 or something. You'll see blobby acid trips and unity3d freakshows, but unlike 2009, now it's on Steam Greenlight & will be properly DRMed.

or like this LA by way of Miami Vice pale aquamarine/magenta aesthetic, like the chillwave of computer games aesthetic. I see that, too.

And I think it behooves us at this point to embrace being sold to and wallow in it, not to abandon your tastes, but to not be turned off by being sold to

eg this guy who was literally in marketing once wrote a long blog post about ofwgkta (nb not a fan or non-fan) and his gist was that these teenagers had SOLD HIM and this made him uncomfortable, and several music critics happened to be around to read it and high fived him, like, yes, clearly these teenagers were all incredibly marketing savvy and thus inauthentic, and their music should get the side eye. Which is ridiculous, not just for coming hypocritically from a marketing dude.

my vision for the future is that virtually (geddit?) everyone has an advertisement, and every thing and service is advertised, and we all embrace advertisements because they're hyper relevant to our interests, like, they're not algorithmically targeted by categories, but by the very, very, very specific things you are interested in.

2 no 2, I guess

G17: So is "fenicence" an encounter with the unutterable in the face of aesthetic detritus?

When is your next thing? Your next article, book, game, etc?

Sonic Adventure's self-playing AutoDemo has a beta version of a level called Windy Valley. The textures are all grabbed from Red Mountain, though, creating a level that looks much more interesting and weird than like most other video games.
omg it's so beautiful

Yeah, cinematech was cool and G4 in general used to be cool when it was video game-centric.

I think that "Germs" game was posted here as a nico video link.

Some of the gfx in that first mix remind me of that style of lazy/arty b-game that is just heavily saturated images superimposed in multiple layers, like kanoguti-type stuff.

The techno mix is pretty good! I'm gonna slsk some of these for sure.

First person ruins excavator. Find bleached bear cans, crow bones, a pastel pacifier, an anime-themed thumb drive, a rusty cable lock, several Ford Fiestas. Collect-'em-all subgame involving taking photographs of wildlife. Use handheld archeodex to identify artifacts and reconstruct a living picture of the past.

Hex-grid Spanish Civil War 4X. No winners.

open world game of pointlessly tantalizing and lovingly detailed locations kept out of reach. No jump button? Underground river, old country home, cemetary, cornfield, treehouse, lighthouse, etc. perfunctory adventure game overlay with investigation and dialogue trees, but real game is metagame of accessing tantalizing locations. each game there is a 1/200 chance that one of these locations will be inexplicably accessible, leading to arguments on the Internet. Denzquix-style code archeologist determines that the dress is white and gold.
