Fear of no responses. I've posted many stillborn topics in the past to the point that I just stopped posting topics.

salt world thought: i think the general whats-on-your-mind thread is bad for the forum. it prevents people from making new threads which would be interesting and popular. there's not even use for a random one-liner thread anymore (which is basically what "what's on your mind" was reserved for when it started) because IPB has a status feature, and many of us are regular twitter users too... our activity is low enough that the general thread is just hindering us. i would like to see the general forum moving faster, with new threads being frequent, and from all different users. so many people have interesting ideas, but they just talk about them in IRC or post them in the general thread... let's prevent this from continuing to happen.
not necessarily saying we shouldn't get rid of the general thread, but by your argument IRC is also harming the community in the same way?

Actually she said that on IRC.

yeah i don't think IRC has the same effect, because it's more separate from the forums. a lot of stuff that is said on IRC gets posted here after the fact, and people will mention, "earlier on IRC we were talking about..." and in the channel people will say stuff like "you should post that on the forums". IRC is cool but it serves a different purpose than the forums, which are less ephemeral.

I like the general thread, just cuz people can use it to ramble on about something like eg their lives, & maybe a topic they weren't even thinking of can spring out of that.

I don't really think there are too few active threads in this forum tho. I'm ok with having a thread from november 18 at the bottom of the page

Okay now I am on board, I totally want to use "likes" as a weaponized form of social capital that I might bury those who oppose me under the morass of their own New Web egocentrism

...except I guess I don't have any of those on this forum...

feature request: a mainsite and a well designed banner for sw
those are already on the list you doofus
Yeah i just think it should be a priority over everything else. I thought i actually wrote a longer post but I must have deleted it or something. I'm not a doofus.... you big meany, you ....    nimwit.

Also adding my vote against the like button. Totally agree it's web 2.0 bullshit, the forum isn't active enough for it and who really cares if someone "likes" your post? If you agree and it's worth noting, just write a post saying so...

The more I hear talk either for or against a 'like' button, the more I want to see it implemented.

On the ONE condition that instead of the button saying 'like', the button actually says "+1 Web 2.0 Bullshit" instead. Or maybe just an icon of a plus sign next to a poop that looks like one a bull would make, that seems like a fair compromise. (If people think the poop would make clicking it look like a negative action instead of a positive one, you could always put a hat on it. Anything wearing a hat always looks upbeat.)

Yeah warped, I accounted for that concern already. Pay attention.
(preferably a cowboy hat, I think that would make the message most clear)

yes! this!! this is the proper way to deal with this controversy. i was indifferent about a "like" button before, but now i want this.
