see there's part of me that goes "yeah that is an overreaction" but fuck high schoolers do too much shit when they're graduating, and the only thing you can do about it is NOT TOLERATE ANYTHING AT ALL

if you say "do not do anything at all except walk up and take your diploma" and they do something else, you have to call them out on it, because otherwise students don't think you're serious about this shit and will be releasing thousands of crickets in the building like it's such a cool idea

if you put yourself in the situation of the people in charge here, that's really what they have to do to keep order, i think the problem is pretty much everyone here is closer to the student's situation than the staff and so they can't see how the staff has to react to this

This is exactly the problem, man! A lot of kids just think whatever teachers say is true but you shouldn't respect their authority over you when the exact opposite is true. Teachers are wrong SO OFTEN it hurts but really they're just there to watch you for a couple hours each day so you're not burning down the city like restless teens are wont to do. Teachers are pretty much just mini authority figures and it doesn't take much to not break their rules. Some teachers are assholes, but oh well.

Plus this was the superintendent so as far as the school system goes you can't get much higher (if higher at all). If anyone had the authority to take away this kid's diploma it was her. In fact, she could take it away for good if she decided to!

If a teacher says "Stop fooling around in class or I'm going to FAIL YOU" and never fails anyone that is pretty much a guarantee that snot-nosed highschoolers are going to fool around as much as possible just because their brains are telling them to rebel as much as possible. Fail a couple kids and they'll snap in line! They'll grumble about it and post on Facebook about how much they hate their teachers but oh well.

but the point I was trying to make is yeah, the kid is a stupid kid, he's a prick a douche but at the same time its fucking graduation. You can't go tell a bunch of excited, stupid, kids on graduation they can't act out or do anything because like you said, they'll do exactly that.

And you got these supposed paid "adults" trained to deal with these kids they get all anal and start freaking out "HE BROKE THE RULES HE BROKE THE RULES GET HIM" over something incredibly lame that did no harm to anyone she made a terrible judgment call and acted like the same stupid little kids that she were supposed to be dealing with in the first place.

To me this is almost like those snide teachers that let out racial slurs when they get mad at some dipshit kids in class and try to cover for it with "th-th- BUT THEY WERE ASSHOLES" or teachers that go out of their way to tack disciplinary actions and basically harass little punk kids that they know are little punk kids but aren't necessarily acting like punks when these teachers chase their tails around like some stupid asshole with a grudge....over....a...dumb....kid.

whereas if they DON'T get him for it a few MORE kids will act out next year

no because none of them will probably remember it or care about it in a year.

I like the way they did it at my school. Our resource officer was a total asshole and had a reputation for being a total piece of shit. So what they did was sit us all in the auditiorium and basically said, "YEAH YOU'RE GRADUATING, GRATS. NOW DON'T DO ANYTHING TOO FUCKING STUPID OR MR.OFFICER HERE WILL HAVE YOUR ASS ESCORTED OFF THE PREMISES!"

and I do not remember anything like this happening at all because they all knew that guy was a dick and if given the chance he'd fuck with some kids hard just to feel good about himself. A few people tried to be funny but nothing too bad.

well he kind of had to wait until graduation because this event HAPPENED at graduation, he couldn't be a dick about this kid any earlier

for all we know he probably wouldn't let other kids walk before the graduation too, there's usually a handful missing at every graduation because of this, this kid just made the news because of specifically what he did and that it happened at the event itself

it's kind of dumb that this is in the news in the first place, kids get denied graduation every year
