i'm playing through deus ex: HR right now, and it's sort of good.  i think it's missing something that the original had.  i'm at the second hub-world and already feeling sort of fatigued.
it would have been better if it was just DEUS EX: HUMAN RESOURCES and was just a short 5 hour game about jc denton wandering sullenly around the office complaining that he can't get direct deposit set up

what a shame

Why don't you play on PS3 man?!?! The PC port is cool and I'll be buying it anyway, but the PS3 version is awesome I don't know why you'd play the PC version when you have the PS3 available. Also anecdotally the community on the PS3 will be far better than the PC, no doubt. The 360 version already suffers from easily hacking the saves so you can have 99 in all stats at souls level 1, with 99 Divine Blessings and shit. The PC version will no doubt have tons of hackers and other bullshit.

Play on PS3 YOU FOOL! If you're just trying to save money (PC version is like $40 I think with all the new content, whereas you'd have to buy the DLC for the new content on consoles) I'll fuckin buy it for you man, not even joking.

Also, grats on Demon's Souls. That game is definitely harder than Dark Souls and a true achievement. I still haven't beat it yet, haven't even got that far, my brother and I are slowly making our way through it, but it's daunting.

I'm interested to see what mods people come up with for dark souls. I don't think the game itself is particularly flawed really, but I'd like to see a bunch of different variations and extensions of the stuff that goes on in it. I wonder if it'll be possible to mod the game to a great extent. There are small touches I'd like to see - like trying to create music for certain areas and playing it in the background to see what it does to the atmosphere, which shouldn't be too difficult to implement. New enemy types and areas would be fun, too. Obviously this is all only if it is done well, which it probably won't be, but I'm curious.

Anyway, I'll get the PC version of it eventually. I'm still playing through the game on my 360, I'm only in the tomb of the giants after getting the lordvessel and draining new londo, so I've got plenty of it left. I've been playing it since it came out, on and off, and have started over a few times.

For me, I buy the PC version over the console version every time for every game, with the exception of extremely poorly done ports (RE4).

This is despite the fact that I've got the 2 current gen consoles that matter. I just use them for exclusives. Hell, I bought the PS3 just so I could play the new Twisted Metal (no regrets gameplay-wise at least)

I'll probably also eventually get a PS2 so I can play through Ratchet and Clank. (I recently bought the PS2 versions for a dollar each.)

If you are wondering what the other console is you shouldn't have. but I'll tell you anyway, the 360, namely for Halo (GOD DAMN IT GIVE ME HALO 3 AND REACH FOR PC YOU SHITHEADS) I'd only buy the Wii for the Mario Galaxy games and No More Heros and I'm not even completely sold on the latter because I'm not usually into that kind of game.

That's cool jamie I didn't know you were playing Dark Souls. Tomb of the Giants is kind of fucking shitty, I just run straight it through it these days (though it's worth suffering through once so you know what kind of treasure is there). When you get to Demon Ruins/Lost Izalith you can get a special helm that gives you a light like the lantern does (or the Cast Light sorcery if you have that) and it makes the area so much easier. You get the skull lantern farther in, if you don't have it already, and it works but you have to either use it in place of your weapon or shield.

Also I'm definitely going to get it on PC, if only to just support From Software because they totally deserve the money, and I really want them to get a huge green-light and budget for their next project. Modding is the one thing I've thought could be really cool, and I'm not sure if they'll ever pull it off (you might not be able to use multiplayer/online while your game is modded), I'd like to see either new weapons/armor or a re-balancing of all the stats and stuff. It just seems like a lot of armor and weapons leave a lot to be desired, and while I don't think everything should be super-powerful it just seems like a lot of stuff should be really cool but is actually fairly lackluster.

Though at this point I've beat the game enough that I just roll around in whatever I think looks cool and whatever I like the moveset of, I don't pay too much attention to stats (unless I want some specific resistance or whatever).

yeah i actually feel like for all the game's reputation as being punishing and very deliberate there is a looseness to a lot of the statistic stuff that makes me feel like beyond a few obviously powerful and useful objects, there is a large amount of flotsam hanging around my inventory at any given time. the core battle mechanics are usually so tight that they overshadow that kind of thing but i've done things like put on all the heaviest, strongest armour i had (which slowed me to a crawl) to see what effect it would have on my defensive capabilities and it wasn't an equal balance to the speed drag at all so i don't see why you would ever use that kind of armour. stuff like that.

i guess i think the game could be cleaned up a little, or like you said, rebalanced so that some of this stuff has use and everything feels more like a finely tuned set of interlocking parts than it does at the moment. i think this is a game, or a style of game, that could benefit from being even more spare in some areas than it already is. atmospherically it really hits it most of the time - i mean, i'd enjoy some more background music but i also enjoy the desolate atmosphere in a different way - the way so much of the game is made deliberately obscure. the deluge of apparently meaningless stats and tweaks make it feel more messy than it should.

It's always interesting to me that even reasonable complaints (like no music anywhere) are kind of hard to make because they obviously serve a purpose. It makes the boss music more meaningful because you never hear music. It makes the music in Firelink meaningful because no area has music. It makes the final battle (you haven't got there yet I guess but the final battle music is very nice, I'm going to learn it eventually on piano (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJQUEtSRLEE)) have a very distinct feel to it. I agree that I would like more music (because all the music they do have is great) but at the same time, I like the effect no music creates.

One thing about heavy ass armor is the poise rating. If you have crazy high poise you don't get interrupted or pushed back at all. Putting on Havel's armor for the Four Kings boss fight (you said you lowered the water in New Londo, did you fight the Four Kings?) makes it an easy tank-and-spank because you can absorb their hits easily and not get interrupted or tossed around. Same as having a high-stability shield, you can absorb hits easier and they can be used strategically for certain bosses/enemies.

Also on the subject of the reputation: I kind of hate how everyone just said HARDEST GAME EVER. It's hard, sure, but not THAT hard. It's more precise and unforgiving than hard. Once you figure out that you have to pay attention and you can't just force any reckless playstyle it becomes a lot easier, and more a test of your patience and awareness than anything.

Although the best aspect is that it's completely skill-based. You can be completely naked at soul level 1 with a shitty club and plank shield, and you can still beat the game. Likewise you can be wearing the strongest armor, have the best weapon and shield, and still get killed by the earliest enemies in the game.

I've not been that hardcore yet, but most of my characters I purposefully wear whatever I want or experiment with all kinds of weapons and upgrade paths just to see if I can do it. With enough time you can learn to use anything. I just don't like that it feels like I'm gimping myself when I do that. It's fun, sure, but there should be more or different drawing points to experimenting aside from "well I can already beat the game let me handicap myself".

Still, it's my favorite game ever. I just started Darkmoon PVPing yesterday. I dont' like being a dick and ruining people's games (Darkwraiths), and when you die in an invasion you don't lose your souls/humanity, so it's like a no-risk PvP. Yesterday I ended up fighting the same 3 or 4 times, and it was always a fair duel, except the last time I nearly killed him twice but he drank from his flask. Annoying.

i really like deus ex: human revolution, but it's like exactly the same game as the original DE.  you hit every single plot point from the first game (at least so far).

i wouldn't say that - i mean it does try to emulate the original game alot, but gameplay wise it is a lot different really. simpler, less crazy, but tighter. i mean the original is 12 years old, so

but in terms of the depth of it, in all aspects, and the apparent intelligence level of the designers, it isn't really in the same category at all. i thought it was pretty fun, though.

Yes! Warcraft II is downloadable here: http://server.war2.ru/modules/news/ you can play it via Battle.net. I tried it myself, it works perfectly without requiring a CD key or anything. Basically it's modified so that it connects to a custom server if I'm not mistaken.

well, i like some things they did.  multitools and lockpicks were just unfun skillchecks and item hoarding excuses.  replacing it with a single (sort of) skill based minigame is cool.  also, the minigame is probably my favorite out of all of the different types i've played.

i think the place where the new one sort of falls down in comparison (although it's still fun) is in the skill system.  i don't really feel like i've gotten noticeably more deadly with weapons despite taking a couple skill-ups in reducing recoil.  i feel like if i can punch through a wall, then maybe i could use that ability for some other stuff too.  i haven't touched any stealth skills because i can usually manage to get ghost level just by being smart and looking at my radar.  this has led me to max out the skill-check stuff (like hacking) and ignore stuff that actually makes the game play differently, which i think is a common failing in perk trees.  i feel like perks should almost never be +% to X or 'unlock this or you can't get past Y doors'.  the original had some of the same problems, though.

i do agree that many levels are sort of linear in comparison to the original, but definitely a lot better than i'd expect from a modern title.

i more meant that the beats of the plot are pretty much the same about 3/4 through (highlight for spoilers):

adopted, probably engineered super soldier fighting to avenge fallen loved one
main sidekicks are security chief and helicopter pilot
bosses are a femme fatale and a vaguely eastern european tank dude
giant supercomputer AI reveal at about the same point
choice between either saving your pilot's life or letting them die
america -> hong kong -> canada -> america in crisis mode -> arctic sea base (I'm assuming, think this is more or less the same for the first)
betrayal by home organization being secretly controlled by the illuminati
dangerous dragon-woman character who uses her feminine wiles to betray you
resistance group as first main antagonist, but reveal that they're mostly pawns

it's almost like a reboot of the series instead of its own stand-alone gameand not major villains

Dead Rising 2.

I liked that game, although not as much as the first at all.

What happened to the photograph taking? That was a really excellent twist that made me think I was playing Pokemon Snap (which I loved). Like taking photos of shit added a really fun element to hitting zombies with sticks and umbrellas.

Also the psychopaths from the first game were fairly "normal" people. It was believable stuff in the context of the horror genre - the hunter family taking advantage to shoot people, the lesbian cop abducting girls, the vietnam vet gone crazy etc, etc. I mean not like HYPERREALISM, but they were more understandable as to why they'd become "psychopaths".

The psychopaths in the second game made little sense at all, or rather stretched belief far beyond the first game's quirkiness. A couple were cool, but most were like hmm...ok.
Hey hey hey
