I really wish I did something that more people found interesting. Like I spent a few hours yesterday making a Turmite and thought it was all exciting. I sent it to a few people when it was done and showed my brother and like, it was a really cool thing because hey! I made it, it worked, I'm cool! Computer Science rules! And it was easier than I thought, even though I was using python (a language I had never used before), I only spent like 4-5 hours on it and it worked perfectly! Nobody really cared about it, not even another programmer. I showed my best friend and all he did was stare blankly and say "oh. cool?".
am I really such a subculture(??) of computer programmer that not even other computer programmers are interested in the same things as me? I could be like a sociologist or a psychologist or a linguistics major or something that people actually care about and be able to say cool things and people will agree they're cool like "hey, i learned in my sociology classes that if you put a fox in front of a moving car and a person in front of the moving car 9/10 people will save the fox" and the people around me will say "hmm very interesting, I think it's because..." and we can have conversation's instead of me being that awkward guy blurting something out "Oh hey did you know uh that a turmite can form a fibonacci sequence given the right rules?" and everyone just kinda shifts away

the...the sad sad life.... of a compsci major...
I care rajew. what did it look like.

hey speaking of roguelikes, I started playing Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup at work in-between things. It's a really nice roguelike! Lots of cool classes and things, I'm enjoying it. It's really hard, never made it past the 2nd floor, though one time I fell through a hole and ended up on the 4th floor, where I was promptly killed by a ghost of one of my previous characters :\

Also, Desktop Dungeons is a really awesome game everyone should check out. It's like a "casual roguelike" and despite how dumb that sounds it's really fun. It seems really simple at first, but there's a lot of strategy involved. All the classes are pretty unique too. It's a really well-made game, tons of fun.
yes coulombs are "germaine", did you learn that word at talk like a dick school?

I care rajew. what did it look like.
I forgot the rules on these were without looking into the code but I'm not really sure how to write them anyways
this is what one looked like after about 20 minutes. it's also my favorite one
this is what it looked like after 4-5 hours of running. It is definitely one of the coolest things I've seen!
this is a more normal one, more like the ones the wikipedia article shows after about 7 hours!

Something about stone soup has never really clicked with me! I think it's how complicated the religion is. too much for me! Desktop Dungeons however, is my current favorite roguelike! Everyone play Desktop Dungeons!
don't mind me, just postin' after a few brewskies

At work when someone says you suck Don't respond to be witty.

Playing UNO card game on are lunch brake and winning might I add!
Male Coworker: You suck. Me: Sorry I will leave that up for the women.

Never meant for a sexual reference more for the vague-alaty and never meant anything by it. People got to stop being offend so easily and stop listening in to other conversations epically when there easily offend.

In fact if you get so offended so easily stop berthing because life isn't rainbows and butter cups. It's full piss, shit, blood, death, delusion's,wanting, hopping failing, pain, destruction, Self-destruction and sex if you can't take it then DIE.

Sort of a rant. Just saying life is just offensive and You should be well adjusted to it by now.

Well my audience are not virgins wait whops That's me  :welp: There just the type to bitch because they can.

My co-work that I was directly talking to didn't mind not like I said it out loud they where just listening in witch I don't mind but when you complain about it then maybe you shouldn't be listening in because you just might find something you might not want to hear.

Edit:
It was more to just to be witty and keep it vague it's the human mind that makes it offensive because then they try to fill the blank. I didn't care where they want with it. If I said that to a child he or she may think nothing of it... Omg if you throw in knowledge you try to fill in blanks and you make something out of nothing.

Edit 2:
Anyways in retro species I'm a virgin but I'm not easily offended but by all rights I should be about most shit I hear. but guess what I'm not because I feel I got feeling that I know what life is about. We are a walking embodiment of offensiveness and we need to learn to deal with it till we die as long as I don't take your rights away why manipulate mine. No one stopping you from listening in but you did maybe you shouldn't do that and we wouldn't of had this conflicted.

but I'm not going to say that to there face because that manipulate there rights. But your going to tell me not to make a joke that was not intended for X(=complainer). Hell the word suck can be offensive in general but they said nothing to him. :fogetnah:

Anything can be offensive and therefor maybe no one should bitch and learn to deal. But shit doesn't work that way.

You're on your own there DD.
And Rajew, I think part of the problem was that the people you spoke to might not have been very familiar with what you were doing. I wasn't familiar with the term "turmite" until I looked it up.

I think another part of it is presentation:
A lot of non- comp.sci majors probably have no idea what you're talking about. If you want to get their attention, you need to explain, in layman's terms, what you're doing, why, and why it's so fascinating.

EG:
"I recently used a new program to model an organism and watched it evolve on its own!",
"Really. "
"Yes. it's called a turmite, a kind of artificial organism. Studying them might help us learn more about how life evolved on Earth, or lead to a truly intelligent machine."
"Really?"
"Really."

While the above conversation might be a tad awkward,  I'm sure you get the idea.

Everyone has the right to be himself; wise men know how to,when, and whether to navigate the boundary between their rights and those of others when they collide.

well first, langdons ant is a first year thing and secondly you're explaining it wrong if you couldn't get people interested. the important part is that the rules are really simple but produce complex results, not how long you spent coding it or how long you let it run for. also, most people (I) get really irritated when people recite me the lecture they've just been to regardless of field.

My point is there's no way you can fill in those blanks without it being rude.

No. What I'm saying is it doesn't matter if you leave it vague. "Leave sucking for the women" is rude, because there is no possible meaning for that which is appropriate.

That, and it's a pretty lame comment anyway.

>.> God I can't get Scarborough Fair out of my head. How do you get songs out, short of headdesking your way to a coma?
"I would be totally embarassed to write this, even as a fakepost. it's not funny except in how you seem to think it's good. look at all the redundancies, for fuck's sake. "insipid semantics, despicable mediocrity" ugh gross gross. I want to take a shower every time I read your prose." -Steel

I understand my comment was vague and what is Implied was questionable there for there shouldn't be any bitching and the fact I did not finish it because it was rude... when I remember there where others in the room and I feel it was bull shit to waste my time to tell me this when I did not finish what I said.

End of Fucking story.

In turn I was offended when I get bitch at for bullshit that tramples on my right of free speech when I'm off the clock BTW. At this moment I should of fucking said it all the way and yelled it out too. (even In truth I didn't mean it at all as I said before, it was to be witty but I'm the type of guy that can be classified as punk and right now someone tell me what or what not too do dose not help the problem. it escalates.)
