i cannot explain how much i love reading old gamepros. it's so great. it's like a fuckin time machine. the best part is how EXCITING the future of games seemed. things were just starting to get really exciting at this point in gaming history and everything was all 3D VR headsets and pure magic. nowadays when i think of the future of games i just sort of think "oh boy we'll get another call of duty soon i guess". it's less magical because i guess we're sort of locked into what technical advances we have right now??? like we know that even if we have the kinect, it won't read your body properly ALL the time and also there's no guarantee that anybody's going to develop for it. even if we have a game with voice technology, we know that you can't just say ANYTHING, you have to use certain keywords and have to say them clearly. you have to do hand gestures just right. back then though it felt like "as long as we wait a bit all of this will be possible AND MORE" but idk i get the feeling nowadays that we aren't thinking that far ahead and it's less exciting
i mean like with the nintendo satellite thing, it felt like that was going to be THE THING to do. and it was! it just wasn't YET. nowadays we have widespread internet access and all the game consoles connect to the internet and you can download games from your couch. nintendo was doing this sort of thing on the snes! it's unbelievable, we ALREADY HAD THAT back then (well we didn't but japan did). the fact that they had that idea back then was fantastic. when i read these old gamepros sometimes it feels like they are accurately predicting the future and then sometimes i read other things and they are way off but more often than not they were dead right. how did they know that almost 20 years down the line games were going to be sent into homes that way? it's great.
I wonder if you can find one of those virtual vision headsets on ebay. I mean they exist somewhere right?? or did they all get thrown out/broken
lol STD
I'm spying on a guy in front of me in the library and he's looking at FUTURE SOLDIERS pictures I guess that's like the Counter-Strike nerd version of old Gamepros
also I'm a douchebag but I directly correlate feeling of no specutacular sort of future on the horizon between 9/11 and games not really advancing very much since then, like compared to SNES/genesis ---> playstation/n64 it hasn't. I mean since 2001 it has felt like TIME FREEZE to me on some level
there were these well-preserved boxes for like SHAVERS from the 60's/70's and they look like really strange/alien designs like even more future than future in the 90's seemed and not like cheesy 1950's version of the future either. Just like why would you make it look like this. Shit I can't find it but it wasn't lolol future is so cheesy (everybody wears rings like on futurama) it was weird and cold like an Autechre cover but yeah they were also like in mint condition so it didn't have that past-y faded look it looked like the future of yesterday right now and the old future looked more future. I'm increasingly worried that we've run out of future. But I was actually sort of self-critical when I was like 9 I think I was saying stuff like KILLER INSTINCT seemed like really naive and bad to me even back then but now I can just laugh at it. But yeah it's kind of like that save the environment episode of Roundhouse (remember that show) where it was the year 2000 and it was like "everyone's fine the earth didn't melt yet" but now it's 2010 and we're like now what depressed that the future wasn't apocalyptic
also lol
